Description
Standing a hand over twelve feet, this massive man has skin the color of
dusty turquoise. Shoulders broad for a human, but average for stormish kind
frame arms marked with corded muscle from bare biceps to massive hands. His
waist is slightly trim, though it bears the mark of years of hard labor
rather than devoted sculpting. Legs proportionally larger than his arms base
his countenance, clearly a source of strength for much of his movement. A
face marked by a bold forehead, high cheeks and narrow nose is framed by a
medium-length beard. His hair, a dark seaweed green, is pulled back from his
hair in a short warriors tail, framing his indigo blue eyes.
His garb is a mix of plate, leather and chain. Older, but well cared for
steel sheathes his torso, forearms, upper and lower legs, while
leather-backed chain guards his joints. The armor itself is bare of much
adornment, save for small jaguars and phoenix facing each other in repeating
patterns around the various trim points. His weapons are similarly
workmanlike, but well maintained, with special care paid to the matching
bastard sword and cutlass sheathed over his shoulder. Looking closer at this
large figure, it is clear that...
Role
Early Life, and a Change of Plans

I remember the smell of the smoke hitting my nose before I rounded the bend.
Based on the mix of burning pitch and horsehair, I feared the worst. I nudged
my skiff towards the shore, using the currents lift as it came around the
muddy outcropping. A covered wagon, pulled up to the shore for evening, was
smoldering in the afternoon sun. Paddling hard, I came to the beach,
springing forth with my docking hook in hand, but I needn't have bothered.
Whoever had done this was gone, leaving death in their wake. It looked to be
a peddler family, and the man and his wife had died with their backs to the
wagon.
Looking around the little beach, I caught sign of cheap iron and warg-fur
fletched arrows, and knew there could be little doubt it had been orcs.
Frustration welled in me: I was a bit over a hundred, and ready to enroll in
the academy for warriors training the next season. Perhaps if I had pushed
myself and learned early, I could have followed their trail and made sure
they did not live to cause more pain. I knew it was a hollow thought - I
could not best a party of seasoned orcish raiders. But I wanted to do more,
and made a promise to myself that I would go to the academy as soon as I
could.
It was as I was wading back to my skiff that I heard the muffled cries. I
remember hurrying to the wagon, and finding nothing. Shokai only know how I
caught glimpse of the cloth protruding from the wagon seat, but when I traced
its source, I found an infant human child coughing and crying. Gathering her
up in my arms, I took back to my skiff and paddled down river to Seven Pines.
No one there could take her in, and I felt torn. I did not know the world
well, my family had moved far away, and my own home was deep beneath the
Tears where I harvested river oysters and the occasional salvage operation. I
was forced to make a choice, and feeling the trembling of the child, I could
not turn her to strangers. I made residence in Seven Pines that night, and
found work as a local ferryman. It would change my life.
The Interlude of Love

The local farmers and townsfolk were kind with parenting advice, and Valair
had a happy childhood - not knowing her name, I named her for my mother, and
my clan - I felt, and still do, that Valair Brightspray is a fitting moniker
for any lady, stormish or human. I used the money I had saved for my academy
entrance fees to purchase a small cottage and hire a neighbors daughter who
had also recently birthed to act as her nurse.
Being a ferryman, mostly from Seven Pines to Shepard's Green, with the
occasional run down to Easthaven, was an exercise in patience. At times I
found solace in the manual labor and reading the river, but every time I
would ferry a peacekeeper scout going up river toward the known entrance to
the underdark, I felt a level of sadness that I did not do more to aid. Every
paladin I brought to the edge of the Lake near the dwarven ruins and the
great Fortress, I felt a twinge of shame that I had not taken up arms. But I
had made a choice - I took Valairs well-being and upraising on myself, and I
did not regret this path that I had dedicated myself to.
Years passed and Valair grew to womanhood. Given the difference in human and
stormish lifespans, I did not change much. Yet still from the earliest words,
she would call me River Father - the thought still brings me a great sense of
warmth and peace. When she married at seventeen, I believed perhaps I would
get to realize my academy dreams. She had a child of her own at twenty, and I
was set to move on before the child grew attached to my presence - not that I
would abandon her by any means, but I would embrace the road I had sought
those years before.
The Interlude, Continued

It was not yet meant to be. Her husband took ill one day, and I went to
Voralian to hire a healer. I knew time was of the essence, and was relieved
to find an acolyte of the Angels Wings willing to make the trip. As we moved
back towards Seven Pines, we were impeded at the bridge by a beggar
beseeching for charity. The healer went to grant him succor, and as he did I
caught sight of a grubby green hand reaching around the priest's belt. My
reach being longer than the charlatan calculated, I grabbed the figure easily
by it's emaciated waist - as the robes fell back, it was clear that the
creature was a goblin.
I was angry, and I brought the creature up to eye level. Repent, I bade it,
pray to the gods of light, stop this thievery - you will find the succor you
need then. I meant the words as I said them, I truly did. The cur spit in my
eye and told me Id do nothing, and we both knew it. The fear I felt for
Valair's husband, and the callousness of the creature I knew felt no remorse,
and I snapped its neck. I knew I was breaking the law, but I could not let
him victimize anyone else, and so I did.
Valair's husband died shortly thereafter, and she was devastated. She did not
ask it of me, but I could feel how much she needed me now, with a newborn of
her own. And so I stayed for another two decades. Again this was laced with
the sadness of death, but with much joy, for I found great satisfaction in
wearing the mantle of river father.
A Bright Future

Fast forward some now. Valair was an older woman, now a successful weaver in
Seven Pines, and her son Dain (named after me, I am still honored) had moved
across the world to find fortune and knowledge. With Valairs blessing - and
instance, praise the Jaguar I raised such a strong woman - I left Seven
Pines, ready for the academy just shy of my two hundredth birthing day.
My muscles had become strong, long and lean from the paddling and guiding
over the years. I found the sword to be a fine match. It is a weapon of both
power and finesse, and will require my utmost devotion, which appeals to me.
The graceful nature of combat, when bent to training or a righteous cause,
provides me solace much as my days on the river did, and yet this time I can
know deep within my bones that I am not standing aside.
Given what happened with the goblin, and so many years before with Valairs
parents, I knew my life was was meant for the Brigade. I am not one to stand
by when duty calls, and now that my duty to family had been completed, I was
ready.
I had grown relishing the Jaguar and the Phoenix, as did many of our kind,
and yet as I came towards completing my training, I felt drawn to the
Spearmaiden. Her value of dedication and drive for what I believe is right
resounds with my soul, and I am of mind to go to her ruins of holiness when I
am properly blooded against the darkness.
