Description

Standing before you is one of the ugliest Duergar youve ever seen. He has two pitch-black eyes, which constantly dart back and forth, taking in everything around him. Below these you see what looks like the remains of what once used to be a nose; a squashed, malformed blob. You wonder how many times its been broken. Tightly drawn lips reveal two rows of jagged, black teeth, which he continually gnashes. Surrounding all this you see a beard as equally vile has his face, you can even see the remains of his last meal in it, which is being happily devoured by some foul beard-dwelling bug The rest of his face appears to be made up purely of scar tissue; there even seems to be an epic battle upon his scalp, as scar and hair fight for valuable real estate. Looking down at his body you see it is just as marred as his face; heavily disfigured, dark-gray skin covers his squat, solid frame. Despite his horrid appearance, he is covered in rippling, tightly knotted muscle, and judging by the way he holds himself, he is not afraid of a fight.

Role

Beardless and Bloodied

Added Fri Jan 19 02:01:23 2007 at level 16:
It was early morning, not that it mattered in the Underdark, and in the
distance the echo of clashing metal and screams could be heard. Nervously a
group of young Duergar (not a single hair on their chins between them) stood
around waiting for orders, and what would most likely be their deaths. The
shadows in the distance flickered slightly, alerting the Duergar to the
Humans torches. The Officer barked off an order, and the Duergar began
their charge; Orphans with dented and broken blades in front, Warriors in
their spiked mail and wielding great war hammers close behind. The tactic
worked, as it always did. The Human raiders hesitated at the sight of the
children, they fought in the name of The Light, they did not slaughter kids,
Duergar or not. Their mind changed quickly however as a company of
AranGrids Elite rushed out of the shadows behind them. Blades flashed
and most of the children fell, and of those that still stood many were
trampled by the charging Duergar. In the midst of the skirmish one Duergar
child stood out, his blunt iron blade quickly exchanged for a shining mithril
one, he swung it about himself with a passion he had never felt before. His
taller foes distracted by the Elite Guard, he could cut their feet out from
beneath them.
The battle ended quickly, even without the Orphans distraction, these
Humans were no match for the Underdarks Elite. The corpses were
plundered, and ale was drank. Gortrak; the only surviving Orphan was welcome
with the Elite, for his feet hacking maneuvers had saved more than one life.
They feed him ale till he spewed and passed out, laughing at his exploits the
entire time.
For many years Gortrak ran with the Elite, they trained him in the ways of
the hammer, women and ale. By the age of 30, Gortrak had seen more battles
most Duergar soldiers see in a lifetime. Mind you, the life of a Duergar
soldier is quite short. Gortrak lived for the battle, the heat of the moment,
the glory that came from it, and the loot found afterwards.
It was in one of the many battles against the Drow that Gortraks Elite
company fell. He was injured at the time from a previous skirmish, and as
such was once again the only survivor. He tried to join another company, a
group of regulars this time, as the Elite were quite arrogant, and did not
accept outsiders easily. These regulars were lazy, untrained peasants. More
likely to flee than fight, most had been posted into the army against their
will.
So Gortrak fled his duties, his army, and headed for the surface. He had
heard rumours of great Warriors and Armies up there. The vast Empire, the
Villages fearsome Warriors, the all-powerful Scion, the light-loving
Fortress and vicious Outlanders. It was these he sought out, the best, and
most powerful.

Scion of the Eternal Night

Added Sun Feb 11 18:07:48 2007 at level 36:
After years of wandering the surface, Gortrak and learned much about the
Armies he originally sought. He fought with and against most of them, spoke
at length with some of their leaders.
The Empire, whilst vast and powerful gains much of their strength through
numbers, Gortrak did not want to just another number. The Outlanders and
Fortress often fought well, but had ridiculous beliefs. These beliefs could
easily be taken advantage of, and that weakened them in Gortrak's eyes. The
Tribunal held great strongholds, but were weak outside their walls.
There were two Armies left that caught Gortrak?s attention, the mighty
Battleragers, and the mysterious Scions. The Village contained some of the
greatest Warriors Gortrak had ever fought, in many skirmishes Gortrak was
beaten back. Yet for all their strength, their greatest weakness was obvious;
Magic. Gortrak quickly learned to control his size and strength through
strange and powerful potions he found within the lands. With these new powers
he crushed the Village Warriors, their great strength now only viewed as
weakness. So with his new respect and awe for magic, Gortrak turned to the
final Army he sought; the Scions of the Eternal Night.
The Scions Gortrak had met were all great fighters and Mages, feared all
throughout the land, not only by their battle prowess, but by the vicious
creatures they fought with. They too embraced the strength that the Village
had viewed as a weakness, and this sparked Gortrak?s admiration. Not quite
an Army, but rather a select few of Thera?s Elite, they battled constantly
against overwhelming and numerous enemies, yet they always came out on top.
So Gortrak set out to find the Chancellor, his soon to be new Officer, and
once again relish in the glory of War.
