Description

Shoulder-length dark hair frames a pale face. The most remarkable feature of that face are the eyes: large, almond-shaped, and a brilliant green. Otherwise, this woman is fairly average-looking. Her ears are larger and more pointed than a human's, giving away her elven heritage. It is, however, clear that she is not entirely elven. She wears very simple clothing, without much in the way of adornment. With earth tones, pale greens, and light tans, her clothing almost looks like it could blend into the wilderness. But she does not have the look of a ranger. Her limbs are too thin, her body too soft. No, this is no fighter. Looking closer, you notice that she carries a leather pouch slung around one shoulder, with a few wands and scrolls poking out.

Role

The Lesson of Water

Added Wed Oct 25 22:49:47 2023 at level 51:
Gwythienne's earliest memory was of the sound of the river outside the little
cottage she grew up on the outskirts of Galadon. It soothed her to sleep,
filled her dreams, nourished her soul in a way that she could never have
possibly understood as an infant. But that is the wonder of being an infant:
understanding is not an expectation. It is enough to simply be, to feel. And
feel she did. It was as if the water filled her spirit in some way. It would
be a thread that would tie everything together within the tapestry of her
life.

Gwythienne's father, Elarion, and her mother, Seraphia, worked at the
lumberyards within the Feanwyyn Weald forest. As Grythienne grew older, she
learned that this had not always been so. Her human father had once been a
traveling actor in a troupe that made a broad circuit between the various
cities of mainland Thera. Her mother, born of high elven heritage, studied to
become an invoker with hopes of being assigned a position within the royal
palace in Darsylon. When Elarion's troup came through Darsylon for a
performance, the two met and had an undeniable connection. The high elves were
unsupporting of a union between one of their own and a lowly human actor, and
so the couple decided to leave Darsylon. For his part, Elarion seemed happy.
But Seraphia felt a deep loss in the separation from her heritage and home,
which she tried to hide from everyone. Gwythienne, a very empathetic child,
sensed this loss and longing and it colored her perception of the world.

"Gwythienne," her mother called to her one early evening, as the sun set over
the forest. "Come here a moment. Look out there, at the river. Do you see how
wide it is? How powerful? Would you believe that once this river was only a
tiny trickle coming down from the mountains to the east? It is true. Water is
the great worker of change in the land. It is tireless. That trickle dug away
at the soil for thousands of years to become a small stream. That stream
became a larger brook, and that brook over thousands more years became this
broad and powerful river we see now. It nourishes life, including ours." Her
mother paused then, gazing thoughtfully out at the water. "It makes one wonder
what other small acts might produce large changes somewhere down the line,
doesn't it? In a way, we are all like the water, digging away at the world,
forming and shaping."

Perhaps Seraphia was thinking of her own past, and how her actions had flowed
like a river, changing everything, to bring her to this moment. But it was a
lesson that Gwythienne never forgot and considers daily: how do my actions, no
matter how small, shape the world? If I am a trickle of water, what river will
I become?

Fluidity and Freedom

Added Wed Oct 25 22:51:19 2023 at level 51:
It had always seemed to Gwythienne that her mother was a type of prisoner.
This beautiful, ethereal elven woman was admired by all here in the lumber
camps, and certainly loved madly by her father. But under the outward grace of
her mother's appearance, Gwythienne always sensed a longing for a freedom that
had escaped her. Over the years, Gwythienne came to understand that her mother
had chosen the best of two non-ideal situations for herself, and that the
knowledge of having chosen correctly could never undo the longing for what she
had lost in the choosing. It was a sacrifice she had made willingly, first for
love and then for her little family. It was something Gwythienne admired
greatly, that willingness to sacrifice. But it fostered within her a great
desire to always be free. Freedom, it seemed to her, was one of the most
important things a person could have in life.

This desire for freedom and her kinship with the changing nature of water
eventually led her to the magical art of shapeshifting. Once she began
dabbling, the idea of the magic took hold of her in a way that nothing before
ever had. Gwythienne's mind reeled with the possibilities of changing shape.
Imagining herself as she had, as a trickle of water shaping the land, she now
considered the idea of her body taking upon it that very fluidity. The freedom
to choose a form to fit the situation, to flow from one shape to the next. She
dreamed of becoming a creature that could delve beneath the depths of her
beloved river, but did not wish to limit herself. She wanted to experience the
world in many ways, to truly connect. And thus she focused her mind upon
becoming beasts of many types, what many called "utility" for lack of a better
term.

When she came of age to enter the adventurer's academy, she did so with the
full support of her parents. Seraphia in particular was thrilled to see her
daughter pursue her magical dreams, thinking of her own dream to become an
invoker what seemed like a very short time ago to the long-lived elf. And so
Gwythienne said a heartfelt goodbye to her loving family, dreaming of what she
would become, how like the river she would shape the world around her.

The Brook Merges with the River

Added Wed Oct 25 22:53:40 2023 at level 51:
In Gwythienne's travels, she learned many things. She learned to take the form
of many animals, able to dive beneath the waves as she had always dreamed, to
burrow in the earth, leap across the plains. It was the freedom she always
knew it would be. In learning these forms, she fought against evil creatures
that harmed the people and the land. With each blow against these evil foes,
she imagined the little trickle of water that was her life enlarging a path,
on its way to be the river that she would become. These choices mattered, and
she remembered them all.

When she had learned all she could of her magic, she began to then consider
what other choices she could make that would shape the world. She wanted to
make a difference, to promote freedom and the light. She had come into contact
with those of The Fortress of the Light in her travels, and in talking with
them had come to admire their mission greatly. While Gwythienne wished to make
a difference in this world, she understood that she was but a single person.
She would have a greater impact if she combined her efforts with others.
Thinking of things in terms of water, as she often did, Gwythienne imagined a
stream merging with a larger river. The stream did not diminish in this union,
it became part of something grander. And that was what Gwythienne wished for
herself.

Thinking also of the lesson she had learned from her mother all of those years
before, about how every small action can have a huge impact somewhere down the
stream of time, Gwythienne was drawn to the path of the Scribe. For in that
path, Gwythienne would influence others' choices as well, amplifying the
impact she could have in this world. She had learned to flow like the water,
now she would learn to heal and nurture like the water as well.

Character Personality:

Gwythienne is an open and very emotionally connected person. She is very
empathetic to others. She is very nurturing and loving, wanting everyone
around her to be happy and at peace. If she sees a person struggling, she will
not hesitate to try to improve their situation. She has a good sense of humor
and a ready laugh. She is generous and kind. Gwythienne is at the same time a
bit mischievous. She values freedom above most things, and thus is likely to
act out if she feels too boxed in. At the extreme, this could result in
conflicts with authority. This value of freedom also makes her wish to teach
others who think differently, rather than punish them unless necessary. This
softer touch will set her apart from her Maran brethren.
