Description

From a distance, this could be a 13' tall, humanoid statue made of ivory. From up close, it is clearly a storm giant, his pale skin a very light blue that grows darker around his veins. Chiseled muscles and an otherwise athletic build mark him as the Warrior he is. What excess clothing he wears is functional, designed to prevent chafing and allow movement, with various small holy symbols emblazoned on. You also notice his gentle face which is proportionate in size to the rest of him and has kind features, including a wide mouth that naturally rests in a pleasant smile. The irises of his eyes are shining pools of gold, endlessly fueled by some inner light. An unruly mane of midnight blue hair completes the portrait.

Role

Gymir - beginnings

Added Thu Nov 18 17:50:43 2021 at level 1:
Gymir was born in a community of giants that kept mainly to themselves in
a remote part of the Aryth Ocean. A precocious child, he was witty and eager
not just to learn but to share with others how much he knew. Over the
decades, as he grew he retained the wit but found himself blessed more with
strength and athletic ability than academic brilliance.

One day in prayer it occurred to him that he had done a great deal more
exploring externally than internally, and so he turned his focus inward and
emerged some time later with a significantly improved understanding of
himself. A warrior by natural gifts, and a pious soul by the same, he
realizes that there is no true conflict between the two unless he fails both
himself and others in his training and decision-making. Peel back the surface
and learning to fight to defend his community is fundamentally different than
taking up the blade to get rich as a mercenary. It was after this that his
elders were entirely content with the choice he made to focus on the warrior's
path. The eldest warrior spoke often of the righteousness of war against evil
but cautioned Gymir that while this could be a holy path if he made it one,
doing so would be up to him every day.

And so he continued to grow in stature until he approached adulthood,
frustrating some teachims with asking incessant questions before trying a
maneuver in practice, but generally proving their time spent answering the
questions worthwhile.

Alas, all good things must come to an end.

Dark mages and warriors, alerted to the community's presence by some
unscrupulous traders who'd lied about a relic of great power to try to save
their own hides, descended on the community. The giants acquitted themselves
bravely, but had little chance, and the ocean was stained red with their
blood. After charging into the fray but falling early in the fight, Gymir
watched, wounded, as corpses were desecrated and bled. The eldest warrior
of the community appeared, dragged Gymir into an undersea current, and left
to return to his fate. He'll never forget their cautions and commitment to
acting their beliefs.

So all in all, adulthood could have started better. Reaching Galadon after
long travel, he enrolled in the warrior's guild thime to make sure he's more
ready next time.

Foundational beliefs for Gymir
Knowing oneself is half the battle.
The other half is showing up.
Everything else is better left to the gods.

With no knowledge of Thera to speak of, he'll begin by advancing in him
guild and actively seeking out those who seem to be pious, goodly sorts.

On Gymirs and other things

Added Sat Dec 25 14:33:53 2021 at level 51:
A diary entry.

Gymir can often be heard to say things like "Gymirs aren't often scared, and
when we are, we're trained to act anyways because fear isn't productive!"

Some explanation is probably necessary.

Gymir is my name and what I go by but it's also the name that every warrior
of my tribe took upon choosing that path. The first Gymirs knew well the
perils of elevating individuals who fought well above others and foresaw a
future where success at slaughter became more valued than purity of heart. So
they took our name as did those who followed them. This has a few
implications.

First, Gymirs don't tend to be keen on trumpeting their own accomplishments
or particularly worried about distinguishing themselves individually. When
times are peaceful we train and contribute as we may. In war, we look to win
more than play a starring role.

Second, Gymirs let go of the past. I've said many times to our good Acolytes
that I believe in living free of past triumphs and mistakes, in learning from
them and moving on. Focusing on the past tends to leave Gymirs sad at best.

Third, Gymirs go where they're needed. What does this mean if I'm the only
one left, and junior at that? I don't know, but I've followed my sense of
right and wrong to the Fortress of Light and believe I'm making a difference.
I celebrate my new brothers' and sisters' unique names and titles. We are not
Gymirs, but together we are something more.

But I do wonder at how different the world is outside our little territory on
the waves. I find myself more and more choosing my path, rather than
following ours. I pray that Lady Baerinika's righteous leadership will help me
make the most of this new existence I've found.
