Description

The stalky height and ebony skin of this man easily mark him as part of the Duergar race. Although tall for Duergar, standing at 4 feet 8 inches, he has a width and thickness to him that make him appear shorter than he actually is. His face is round, and like most of his kin he sports a long greasy black beard. His eyes are dark and sunken and have a sort of haunted quality to them.

Role

Off To Jail

Added Wed Jun 20 17:39:41 2012 at level 25:
Two Arkham guards looked on as their partner searched the unconscious duergar laying near the
entrance to one of Arkhams alleys. Despite his prone position, the duergar appeared tall for his race. He
was also very broad of shoulder and had a thickness that spoke of great strength, even though the
muscles werent well defined.

Look at what we have here. Proclaimed the guard searching the duergar as he held up and tossed a
small, weighty sack to one of his partners. It was a sack full of gold. About 100 gold coins to exact, a
small fortune. Theres no way this ragged duergar came by these honestly. Gishka will have our hides if
we dont lock him up until we can figure out who he robbed. With that the three guards trussed
Hagmish the duergar and hauled him off to the jails.

Jail

Added Wed Jun 20 17:42:02 2012 at level 25:
The cell Hagmish was locked in was small, and very dark. It was so small and devoid of any contact from
the outer world, that even with his keen sense of sight in the dark, everything appeared to be shadows
up shadows. He couldnt remember how long he had been in the cell. Come to think of it, he couldnt
even remember how he got into the cell. What was the last thing he recalled? He wasnt sure. His mind
was a total blank.

Time passed on. Many months to be precise and Hagmish endured the dark with nothing but himself, or
lack thereof, to keep himself company. The only change in the darkness of his cell was the occasional
plate of slop that passed through the slit at the bottom of the door. It was a good thing that he was
duergar, else he would never have been able to stomach the awful garbage he was served. The food
didnt come in any regularity or quantity to keep him well nourished, either. As the days wore on,
Hagmish shed pounds until he was nothing more than an emasculated bag of skin and bones.

More months passed. Hagmish was certainly going to rot in these cells, as he had probably been
forgotten about since it was very unlikely the guards would match an owner to the coin purse. By now,
the solitary confinement and darkness had taken its toll on Hagmishs mental state of health. He was
losing his sanity. It began with Hagmish absently talking to himself. Then he began speaking to the
shadows as if they were personified. In fact, he spoke with them at such lengths and in such depth that
he certainly believed they were real and communicating back with him. In all actuality, he was probably
just plain mad, but, was it possible the shadows could actually be talking to him? These conversations
would last for hours on end, and usually he could hardly remember what he was speaking about just
moments before. That was until one day.

It All Came Back Part 1

Added Wed Jun 20 17:44:13 2012 at level 25:
It was if a fog had lifted. Hagmish had been in the middle of one of his conversations, or rants,
depending on whose point of view you held, when something he said sparked a memory in him. It was
as if he was struck by lightning and a mental fog lifted off of his brain. He had been speaking of finding
some sort of magic when his memory stirred. Slowly, all the events leading up to his capture began to
come back to him.

He recalled being some sort of entrepreneur. That is to say, he worked any deal he thought he could
make some coin on, whether it was hiring himself out for a job or conspiring with others in some sort of
scheme. He was a criminal, living in the seedy underbelly of society trying to make his way, anyway he
could. That was when he was approached by the drow necromancer. The drow made him an offer too
good to refuse. He said he needed a man for hire, for a secret and possibly dangerous undertaking the
drow was planning. Hagmish was needed to serve as an underling. He was to pack supplies, be an extra
sword, aid in any way possible and discretion was required. Hagmish assumed the drow to be up to
some sort of magical research and figured he had been chosen simply because he didnt understand
magic, nor care to. For his services he was to be paid handsomely. 100 gold coins up front and another
200 when the job was complete. He would wealthy beyond his dreams and gladly agreed.

It All Came Back Part 2

Added Wed Jun 20 17:48:30 2012 at level 25:
Hagmish met the drow at an inn in Arkham, just as he was told. They gathered in a rented room and
were preparing to depart when the drow called Hagmishs attention to him. Before we go, I require you
to swear an oath of service to me for the duration of this job. The drow told him in an unquestioning
tone.

All right, I be swearin ter serve ya til this work be complete Hagmish flippantly grumbled back to the
drow.

Not just yet, the drow sneered as he deftly produced a long, wicked looking dagger with a sapphire hilt.
With the speed of a drow, the mage grabbed Hagmishs hand and ran the blade across his palm drawing
blood. Now say the words., the drow demanded. Looking reluctantly at the drow, Hagmish repeated
the words he just said. The moment he completed them the air crackled about him with an unseen
energy, the sapphire glowed an eerie blue and he suddenly felt as if his soul had been saddled. There.,
the drow said smugly Now you are bound to me by powerful magic until you die or this task has been
completed.

What tha hell were that!, Hagmish demanded. What tha hell be so important ta do that yer gotter
trick me inta swearin a magic oath!

Since you are bound to me beyond your control I see no harm in telling you. The drow calmy replied.

You are likely unaware, but, necromancy in part is the study of negative energy. It is the opposite of
positive, life-giving energy. It is what animates corpses, causes their rot, and so forth. Long ago, there
lived a necromancer named Mahasa who believed that positive and negative energy existed in balance,
and producing negative energy upset the balance, which is why it is so difficult to control and can have
some detrimental side effects, such as the decay of a Lichs natural body. Many years ago, I discovered a
book written by one of this mages apprentices where it stated that Mahasa believed he discovered a
way to produce negative energy in such a way that it didnt upset the natural balance. It is a fascinating
claim, because if it were true it could mean endless, powerful possibilities. It would mean that he could
become the first truly immortal lich. A lich that never died. A lich that never decayed. One that
regenerated instantaneously and whose zombies would be the same. In fact, I believe that with the right
application this power could even be used to control the living. As it is, this manuscript claims that
Mahasa was destroyed during the becoming process and his apprentices conclusion was that whatever
he tried to add to the process from his discovery was the cause of his demise. The truth is, I have since
learned this apprentice was one of two apprentices and the other was the only one present during the
ritual. You see, I summoned the apprentices soul back from the grave to learn what secrets about
Mahasa I could.

It All Came Back Part 3

Added Wed Jun 20 17:51:41 2012 at level 25:
In fact, the drow learned that what Mahasa discovered required a living, willing sacrifice and that the
lesser of the two apprentices was made part of the ritual to serve this purpose. This is the true reason
why the drow had hired and bound Hagmish.

The drow continued, I had my suspicions about the reason for Mahasas failure and as it turns out my
suspicions were well placed. The apprentice told me all he knew about the ritual Mahasa performed.
While he didnt know the specifics of Mahasas secret for producing negative energy, he told me that
the ritual was performed in a secret chamber, magically hidden and he told me the location. He also told
me that Mahasa kept a tome of all his knowledge, and it was with him during the ritual, which likely
exists even today. Finally, he told me about the becoming ritual. He told me which ingredients he was
tasked to gather to create the elixir and after much study I have determined that the fool so focused on
his own secrets overlooked an obvious clue and did not properly make the elixir! You and I will travel to
locate this secret chamber and Mahasas secrets kept within.

Several days later, the drow and duergar located the secret chamber. They found a large stone table,
that appeared to double as an altar, with a tome resting on top of it. The drow was so wrapped in his
excitement and lust for power that just as Mahasa, he overlooked the obvious, and didnt realize the
book was magically warded. When he tried to open and read the book it released a magical concussion
of energy that instantly killed the drow. Hagmish, being much farther back in the chamber, was blown
off of his feet and knocked unconscious and that was the last he could recall.

Now that he remembered everything that had occurred he realized that he still felt that weight around
his soul from when he was bound by the oath and he realized he had an uncontrollable desire to find
this magic. What Hagmish didnt realize was that the magic binding him to the drow was similar to the
magic that warded the tome and when the magic was released it caused a dramatic change in him. The
binding magic itself had been altered slightly so that he was no longer bound to the drow but still bound
to complete the task and discover the secrets that the tomes magic had guarded. The change was so
powerful that since both magics were dark, negative and necromantic in nature that even Hagmishs
personal sphere of influence was changed to necromancy.

Hagmishs head felt much clearer upon this rush of memory. And even though he felt much more lucid,
he still heard the voices talking to him that he thought were from the shadows and not just in his head.
With this new found memory and lucidity, Hagmish plotted with what he thought were his shadow
friends to escape. And escape he did.

Role Clarification and Scion

Added Wed Jun 27 17:29:07 2012 at level 30:
A point of clarification for Hagmishs role is that he doesnt remember all of the details of what
happened to him. He doesnt recall the location of the secret lair, nor does he remember all the precise
details of what the drow told him. Also, Hagmish does not always realize he speaks to himself, or the
shadows. It is something of his inner voice mixing with his outer voice that he doesnt always realize
other people are aware of. This occurs only some of the time, as he is aware that other people seem
not to hear the shadows when they speak.

Hagmish has joined the Scions in an effort to learn more about completing the task he is magically
bound to complete. He is fascinated by the Nightwalkers he can call through the Ebony Scepter and
wonders if there is a connection between them and the shadows he believes to speak to him. He has
researched what information is available on the Nightwalkers in the Chasm and wonders if there is a
connection between the telepathy of the Nightwalkers and the reason only he can hear the shadows.

Meeting Reksah

Added Mon Jul 2 07:45:54 2012 at level 34:
Hagmish sent a scroll to the Lord Reksah in an effort to pledge his intentions of following the great Lord.
He hopes that the Lord of secrets can shed some light on his quest to find the secrets and release the
magic that binds him.

Upon receiving the scroll in Hagmishs atrocious hand writing and grammar he pulled Hamgish into the
interrogation room to make a very delicate point about the form of his writing. The point was painfully
taken well and Hagmish has vowed to himself that he must learn to write in a manner suitable of his
place among scholars. He has also decided that he will work on speaking the common tongue in a more
intelligent and concise manner. This undoubtedly would take years, if he is even able to do it at all.

A Name!

Added Mon Jul 9 15:35:42 2012 at level 35:
Hagmish was passing through a small merchants shop that dealt in armors and treasures that hed
never been to before. He had some dragon armors that he was trying to find an interested buyer and so
he approached the merchant. Unfortunately for Hagmish, the merchant didnt have enough coin to
purchase the armors he was looking to sell. As he turned to leave he noticed a ring sitting on a stand
labeled Soramas Ring. Hagmish read the tag and continued to pass by, intending to give the item little
thought when he realized the name struck him as familiar. He turned and looked at the small lettered
sign again and thought about it. Why was that name so familiar, it was if hed heard it before, yet it
didnt sound just right. Sorama, no. Sopama? Sovama, no that wasnt it either. So Sor - Sortoma! That
was it! The name spoken in his mind seemed to open another wash of memory as if the name invoked it
to come to life. He remembered being back in the room with the drow necromancer and the drow had
told him the name of the apprentice whose soul he summoned back from the grave was Sortoma!!
What an epiphany! He now had something concrete to work on.

The question was what to do with this new found information. Could he perhaps find a way to summon
Sortomas soul back from the grave just as the necromancer had? Perhaps some of the other Scions
possessed the knowledge for such a ritual. Whatever it was, Hagmish knew he had to find a way, and
make some progress soon. The Chancellor believed that the binding between his oath and the Scepter
pulled at him in different ways and these opposing binding could be very dangerous. He did not want to
give the Chancellor any reason to see it more beneficial to make a sacrifice out of him.
