Description

A stout dwarf stands here, a wild and mischievous look on his face. His eyes seem to flicker and burn with an inner fire that at times seems to leap into full blown flames. A toothy grin splits his mouth, covered in a beard that seems to have been scorched in patches. He bobs his head about as if he cant keep it still, helmet slipping around precariously. His armour appears to be of superb make, as you would expect of the dwarven folk. Various fine inscriptions can be seen all over the fine steel plate. A well maintained shield is slung across his back a fire and anvil insignia emblazoned in red and black. The only blemish on the shield is a scorch mark in the distinct shape of a paw. His sword is of the same fine make his armour shows but without the gaudy decorations many warriors delight in. A simple and well worn leather strap provides the grip for this simple weapon.

Role

A Strong Flame

Added Wed May 20 06:15:36 2009 at level 51:
Haidoril sat in the corner of the Inn, staring into his half drunk mug of
ale. The hour was late but he hadnt moved from his stall since hed arrived
at sundown. A serving maid cleared tables of the clutter accumulated over the
night, mistaking the intense flames in the eyes of the dwarf for a reflection
of the low burning hearth.

Haidoril replayed the images in his mind over and over again, feeling there
was something he was missing. Some important detail he was overlooking. He
had been immediately startled by the destruction wrought in the Fireblood
bar. In that place he had shared many drinks and many laughs. With perhaps
his best friend.

He recalled his heart skipping a beat as she stepped from the shadows, a
forlorn figure, ears flattened to her head, barely a spark jumping in her
eyes. The hollow sound in her voice as he tried to raise her ire. It had been
a difficult experience, perhaps the most difficult of his life. Seeing this
unflappable and constant presence so close to the brink of spluttering out.
He should have seen it coming over the years. Every time one of those that
burned too quickly reached the end of their life, his Lady had waned a little
more.

He thought back to the days when her presence was all that kept him going.
Those troubled days when he felt so unsure of his place in the world. His
Lady had told him that he had never really needed her but he knew that wasnt
true, he had needed her then. He HAD needed her! That was it!

Haidoril stood and gulped down the rest of his ale. He had seen his Goddess,
his Lady, his best friend brought to the edge of despair. But he had stood
firm. He knew his place, he knew his duty and his flame still burned strong.
It was a bitter-sweet feeling that the flickering of anothers flame had
shown him how strong he was. But all of a sudden he felt the same spring he
had in his step as a young squire. He closed his eyes and concentrated for a
moment before a hammer of bright flames came into existence in his hands. He
strode out of the Inn full of purpose to the astonishment of the few
remaining patrons and staff.

A Squire's Example

Added Fri Jan 16 03:07:21 2009 at level 51:
Haidoril stood on a snowy ledge, looking over the courtyard. He watched and
smiled as the squires scurried around preparing themselves to strike out at
the darkness from the relative safety of the Fortress. It had not been so
long since he'd been a wide eyed young warrior, eager to prove his worth.
With his maturity had come the confidence of the Lady Jaguar as she had
promoted him to become one of the Maran. Far from being the culmination of
his life's work, Haidoril realised he would have to redouble his efforts. He
serving the light with all of their being. He smiled softly, rejoicing in the
fact they had found peace. In the absence of formal leadership, he resolved
to be a true example for the young squires. A guiding voice as they tried to
find their place as he had. Many of them were fine warriors but the ability
to take a life was a small part of being a Maran.

From his position above the courtyard he heard one of the young squires
complaining bitterly about an encounter with one of the tainted. An assassin
that had taken the squires weapons in an encounter. Haidoril frowned and
stomped down the stairs to the courtyard. As he crunched across the snow many
of the other Squires glanced up and saluted him. He returned their greetings
with warm smiles and reassuring slaps on the back.

"Ill be alright! Once the bastard is lying dead at my feet, Ill have a
smile on my face then!" The squires tirade continued as Haidoril approached.

"I think you will find, sister, the light will not be served by your revenge.
Look around you. These are your family. Look to your heart, this is your
strength. There is nothing the darkness can take from you that you need." As
Haidoril spoke, his eyes fixed on the fuming Squire, the crowd of onlookers
increased.

"I say this to all of you. As long as your hearts and minds are free of the
burden of the tainted, your soul cannot be harmed. This fleshy stuff",
Haidoril grabbed his gut, "this can be destroyed. But your soul will go on.
This I swear to you brothers and sisters. Keep the fires of hope burning."

The Squire in question, now faced with a crowd of others murmuring excitedly
about their new inspiration, turned on her heel and stormed towards the
halls. The eyes of every other squire following her as she went. As she
disappeared into the halls one of the young warriors turned to Haidoril, "I
worry for her, Maran. What can we do?"

"We can show her the true path. The rest is up to her." He closed his eyes
and smiled, taking a knee and quietly uttering a prayer for the protection of
those gathered. As he stood and opened his eyes a sense of confidence and
inspiration passed to all present. "For the light, brothers and sisters!"

Haidoril crunched off towards the gates of the Fortress, mace and shield in
hand. He suddenly felt very warm and slightly fuzzy, as if some unseen furred
creature had reached out and hugged him. He grinned to himself.

Flame of Hope and Inspiration

Added Tue Dec 23 20:47:49 2008 at level 44:
In a time of silent reflection in the snowy, night courtyard of the Fortress
of Light, Haidoril knelt and thought about the influences that had landed him
where he was.

He had thought that perhaps he wasnt at home amongst the brigade and that
there was no room for the Paladins code when destroying the darkness. He
grimaced a little as he wondered at how wrong hed been. It was the Lord
Isendor that corrected him, the Paladins code not only belonged but was
necessary to provide an example to those he fought alongside, those he fought
for and those he fought against.

The Elder Prophet, crunching across the snowy courtyard, called a greeting to
him before twisting into the shape of a noble unicorn. He smiled and tipped
his hat in response, thinking about what his father might think of him
associating with the various mages and elves of the fortress.

Haidoril was inspired. Inspired by his Firey Goddess, inspired by the noble
elf Lord that had provided so much insight and inspired by many of the men
and women that stood alongside him. Most of all he was inspired by the though
he could become a great example. He could stand with the Squires and be a
burning beacon for what they must be if they wish to win the war. It would be
easy to walk away from the Brigade thinking he didnt belong. Providing an
example and changing his comrades for the better, that was the true path.

His voice returned to him with a hiccup and a puff of smoke from his mouth.
He grinned to himself and absently rubbed the warm spiral scratched into his
hand. Looking up at the sky to the red star that he always felt was winking
at him, Haidoril knew he would be happy as long as he was throwing himself
into the fires of change.

The Imperial army approaches!, the cry went up from the gates. Haidoril
closed his eyes and bellowed a prayer for all to hear.

Light grant us the strength, wisdom and temperance to stand where others
cannot!

He got to his feet and strode towards his companions standing grim faced at
the gates, offering up prayers and words to provide them protection and hope.

A Change of Heart

Added Thu Dec 18 22:05:02 2008 at level 43:
Haidorils time in the Fortress left him with some soul searching to do. He
was passionate about standing against the darkness but did not imagine that
becoming a squire could ever cause him a conflict of heart. Too many times he
was expected or nudged to do things that caused his stomach to twist slightly
with the sense that he was being asked to do something that would go against
his heart. Finally culminating when the Captain of the Brigade suggest he
summon and kill a dwarven guard for his armour. Perhaps the straw that broke
the camels back but actions like that would threaten to douse his flame
permanently if he took that path. He had vowed to destroy the darkness any
way he could but he would not take a path of violence against innocents.

It is because of this bubbling uncomfortable feeling that Haidoril has
decided to ask to be relieved of his duties as a squire. While he respects
and acknowledges the war they fight, the way they fight it is not for him.
Instead he has become enamoured of a different order, The Acolytes. The
Cardinal of the Golden Sun, Unalethekai, had become a great source of
inspiration for him. A fierce warrior that always stuck to his beliefs and
defeated evil with the sword and the word. He was the embodiment of something
Haidoril had always aspired to be. Whatever life had in store for him,
Haidoril would never feel constrained to stay somewhere that he didnt feel
made his heart sing.

A Life of Learning

Added Sun Nov 30 06:28:05 2008 at level 26:
Haidoril has travelled the lands extensively and had his share of encounters
with the evil that plagues it. He recognises that evil is not only
destructive in a very real sense with many being oppressed by the power of
the darkness but also destructive in the insidious way it invades the minds
and hearts of the people. Too often people do not realise they are committing
acts of evil until it is too late.

This reality was made obvious to Haidoril in his dealings with the Blood
Tribunal. A group allegedly aimed at protecting the law and the innocent, it
quickly became apparent that the flawed laws of men could be twisted to suit
the ends of those of a dark heart. Originally Haidoril felt somewhat
conflicted, he initiated a battle in Hamsah resulting in a warrant being
issued for his head. Feeling that he perhaps had indeed disturbed the peace
and recklessly endangered lives, he turned himself in to the guards. Years
later however, he was involved in a running battle with a duergar thief that
had jumped him. When he entered the city of Hamsah the thief attempted
subterfuge to strip him of his possessions. Haidoril unleashed the wrath of
his Lady on the thief before he slipped away into the shadows. This time
however he could not see any merit in the law. A dark knight issued a warrant
for his head and insisted he turn himself in while the thief got away free.
More disturbing than this to Haidoril was the reaction of other Tribunals.
Men who do not consider themselves to be dark hearted hunting him because he
refused to lie to a Dark Knight about defending himself from a thief.

He sees a world now more than ever that requires a shining beacon of the
light. He would not lie and he would be unyielding in his beliefs. A young
warrior of the light queried him on his warrant, Do you wear it as a badge of
pride?

Not of pride. A badge of faith. As long as you walk in the light the burning
flame of your righteousness cannot be dulled by evil in any form.

Character Insights

Added Fri Nov 14 22:29:57 2008 at level 10:
Haidoril has chosen to devote his life to the pursuit of the destruction of
evil. He feels that the passion and devotion he posses can be used not only
to destroy evil with the sword but also by providing a shining example in the
darkness. In some ways he considers himself to have been reforged or at least
placed on the correct path in his young life by his grandfather. His father
raised him to hate mages and young children tend to, he followed blindly as
if it were some kind of great game. He still harbours some distrust for
mages, which he is somewhat embarrassed about and trying to overcome. After
his father was slain in battle, Haidorils grandfather became his mentor and
taught the boy that perhaps his fathers life was not all it could have been.
The world is plagued by true evil and too few men focus their complete
attention on its destruction. The young Haidoril was energetic and
passionate, just as he is today, and his grandfather nurtured these traits.
Now as a dwarf come of age he feels compelled to strike out from his home and
be all that he can be. In doing so, he hopes to help people be all they can
be.

A Ball of Spirit

Added Fri Nov 14 03:21:16 2008 at level 4:
A crash sounds in the almost deserted, but still hot enough to drive away
most men, forge. A young dwarf, barely an inch of dark beard protruding from
his chin, rolls head over heels through a pile of leather aprons and old
tools, a stout young pup bolting away from him.

"Come 'ere, dog!", cries the ball of arms and legs as it tries to right
itself and pursue.

An old dwarf, his attention previously completely focused on the sword taking
shape in his forge now turns to the source of the racket. He sighs but a
smile twitches the beard on his face.

"I've got a better idea, Haidoril. You leave that dog to its business for a
time and come sit on my knee, lad."
The younger dwarf writhes from his tangle, an apron stuck over his head, and
stumbles headlong into a workbench. A chuckle escapes from the elder as
Haidoril sits up with a grin, now free of the apron.

"I tell you boy, I don't think even your old man was that hard headed and;role + full of beans."

Haidoril scampers across the floor and leaps into the lap of the now seated
elderly dwarf. As he squirms to find comfort he gazes up into the face of his
grandfather, a contrast of generations.

"Boy, do you know what your Da' was fighting for when he died?"

"Yeah! He was gutting those no good mages!"

The elder dwarf furrows his brow, a worried expression over taking him.

"That he was and a finer warrior you'd be hard pressed to find but you've got
to look at what he was fighting for. What did he think he was going to
achieve when his time here was done? Sure enough I have no great love for
mages but trying to stamp them out has cost more than a few good folk their
lives on both sides."

Haidoril furrows his brow and balls up his small fists, a look of
concentration so profound unusual to see on a young firebrand such as he. His
grandfather draws the partially forged sword from the coals, glowing red.

"You can make whatever you like of your own life, lad. But what will your
life make of others? You may choose the path your Da' took, or you might
forge your own, whatever you do, never let that fire in your belly go out.
You can use it to remake the world for the better."

The young dwarf nods his head slowly and solemnly. A scuffling noise from the
corner of the room draws his attention to the puppy, now trying to drag a
leather apron around in its mouth. Haidoril leaps up and bolts after the pup.
