Role
Arkham

Halifan was committed to the Arkham mental asylum at a very young age for exhibiting extraordinary acts of social
dysfunction. He would pick fights with other children, and had no desire or ability to play well with others. He
would torture, disfigure and sometimes consume small rodents and animals. This would make him quite sick, but he
found it fascinating to explore the anatomy of all things. Were it not for his sociopathic tendencies, one could
say Halifan was an extremely curious boy with great initiative. His parents, unclear of how to cure him, took it
upon the recommendation of their family friend and doctor, Gustaff, to entrust the boy to his care at the asylum
for further study.
Gustaff himself was not a well man. A doctor by trade, but a pedophile by practice, he would put the boy through
various unspeakble terrors in the pursuit of his lust disguised as twisted science. Halifan would create elaborate
fantasies in his mind to distance himself from the abuse. The asylum was a playground of illusions for him. One
day his cell would be a circus, the next it would be a forest. The boy became quite good at crafting illusions,
and with no proper human support structure or tutilage of developmental skills, reality became less and less lucid
as the boy would confuse his illusions for what was really happening, and vice versa.
One of the asylum orderlies, Larchmont, had an agenda of his own. He had been conspiring with a rather secretive
sect of Scions to aid their research in exchange for various treasures and gold from their pit. The Scions were
researching the foundations of the human mind to sense the extraplanar beings that they were fond to call into
Thera, and any damaged minds they could get their hands on would only help in their research. Larchmont would
leave the door unlocked at night sometimes, and the researchers would have their reign of the asylum.
One favored experiment was documented as 'mousetrap.' In this experiment, the researchers would open a tiny
tear into the plane of Shadow near a patient, with the express purpose of seeing how the Ccul'gra responded
to our definition of insanity. To Halifan, seeing this portal, with an indescribable horror staring back
at him, wasn't very terrifying at all. It was all part of his reality of things, and this was just something
else to accept. Halifan had come to understand that reality is one giant string of events with no rhyme or
reason to it, and treated these incidents as nothing more than accepted constants of time. Sometimes he
would reach for the portal, and sometimes the creatures would reach for him, but for the most part they each
stayed their ground.

Eventually, prolonged exposure to Ccul'gra took a toll on Halifan's mind. Their constant shrieking would
echo inside of his head, and their seemingly telepathic link to his thoughts would tug and pull at his
shrinking definition of reality, to the point where his brain suffered a stroke and the nerve chords connected
to his eyeballs were overly strained to the point of giving him the somewhat discomforting appearance of a cross-
eyed, lazy eyed figure.
Over time, his mind would fix itself, the brain rebuilding the pathways that made him human and restoring bits of
reality to him. He knew on some level that the portals were extraordinary, and he knew on some level that he
did not live in a circus. He subconsciously decided that the world as he knew it pre-asylum was far less
interesting than this new world full of excitement, where every day brought something new, and he could indulge
his twisted desires as much as he wished to.
Somewhere in his 16th year, as a testament to the glory of the human spirit, he eventually decided it was time
to branch out of the small world he had been accustomed to, and through a series of elaborate, gruesome and
callous events murdered Larchmont and Gustaff, and used the relatively lax security of the asylum to escape through
a door that probably should have been locked, into the crisp Arkham night.
The Academy
Added Mon Sep 9 20:45:01 2013 at level 11:
Halifan stumbled about the night in a haze, delirious with a combination of joy, freedom and, well, just generally
delirious. He would run in and out of shops and homes, taking everything in with a rapacious curiosity. He did not
generally have a plan in mind with his newfound freedom, but once he found himself hungry, he proceeded to the local
temple where there was a warm light, cool water, and free bread. At some point, a voice entered his mind instructing
him simply to 'go down.' Whether this was the voice of the healer, a Ccul'gra that somehow festered inside of his
mind, or simply reading the words of a sign in front of him, he wasn't sure. But he looked below his feet, and there
appeared another portal to transport him to an academy.
He wandered the various rooms of the Academy, learning many things about the world. Reading signs, wearing clothing,
and hitting leathery creatures with his dagger gave his mind the perfect remedy to its own machinations. He found
the simple activities interesting, and at the same time, boring.
He wandered around to various guilds that had set up inside of the Academy, and each promised to teach him something
to give his life purpose and a framework. His first visit was to the Warrior's guild, where the instructor gave
him a sharp, pointy object and told him to thrust it the practice dummy. Halifan looked at the instructor, and
instead stabbed him in the abdomen, spilling his guts everywhere. Through some mystical magic, however, the instructor
stood up, shook his head at Halifan, took away the sharp, pointy object and booted him from the guild.
A shadowy figure whispered next to him 'Halifan, come this way. Follow in the path of the shadows.' The thief
guildmaster promised to give the young boy the world's riches, if only he would learn to hide in the shadows. Halifan
hid with the guildmaster for a while, but the experience of being in close, shadowed proximity with an adult human
made the boy feel uncomfortable, and so he took a torch and lit the man on fire, exposing him and dissolving any
shadows that might have been used for hiding. Slowly exiting the guild, he made his way over the devout section of the
Academy.
The Academy II

His first stop was to the paladin's guild, where he was summarily rejected from entering its halls. 'You have a red aura,'
he was told, yet when he looked down, all he could see was the pale color of his skin. He dismissed that, and all,
paladins as being insane and potentially color blind, and moved on to the healers guild. He lasted about five minutes
before the boredom of it all overtook him, and after chopping his way through the foliage of the druid's guild found
himself standing in a place of great magic in the Academy.
His first visit was to the conjurer's guild, where he recognized the shape of a portal that he recalled seeing in his
youth. He was most interested in this guild, however being the social deviant that he was, he did not make any
friends there. As the instructor was attempting to teach the boy how to cast a magic missile, Halifan noticed what
looked like a black raven at the guildmaster's side and proceeded to grab it, crack its' neck apart, and bite into
it. Some habit are hard to break, it would seem. Halifan was quickly escorted out.
The invoker's guild did not take long. One fire, two electrified cats, and an earthquake later, Halifan was on his way
to the necromancer's guild. One look around was enough for the young boy - they were all wearing black robes. Surely
life was not so depressing as to relegate oneself to spending time with the dead. And so Halifan skipped along to
his next guild.
In the shapeshifter's guild, Halifan found a mirror. When he looked at the mirror, he did not see himself, but rather
that of some unspeakable beast. This brought great joy to Halifan. Whatever he would concentrate on, no matter
how improbable or anatomically incorrect, the mirror would show back to Halifan. A lion, a tiger, an eagle, a spider.
Halifan was able to warp the definitions of all of these beasts into his own twisted reality, and suddenly they were
horrific versions of themselves. He decided then, this would be the path that resonated the best with him.
On joining Scion, and growing up
Added Wed Oct 30 20:08:30 2013 at level 51:
The fires burned hot in the elemental plane as Halifan took a moment to reflect on his path thus far. Taking out a notebook and
zapping it with an ice cold wand, he tempered it against the flames as he began scribbling down his thoughts at random.
'It has been many years now since I have joined the Scions. The Ccul'gra seem to welcome me, and indeed have become my only
friends as I rose through the guild. The Scions are a bit of a detached lot. Outside of Zhenyen, and a few younger ones, there are none
here for me to walk with, share my thoughts with or study the planes together with. I suppose that is fine, for while my
solitude has proved hard throughout the many years, it has also given me a strength I did not know to possess. Against the hordes
of enemies that sought my blood, I have begun to temper myself against their advances, and even strike back with an efficacy that
I did not know to possess.
When I was first invited to join, I was confused by the seeming lack of a proper initiation. Surely my hollow words on research and
lies about knowledge of Maethien (of which I do now know) were not enough to fool the Chancellor? Now I see his true trial:
survive as a Scion against the hordes, alone, and you may earn a place among them.
That was then, and this is now. I am also glad to see that I seemed to have overcome my initial awkwardness and insanity after the asylum.
My speech patterns have since corrected themselves, and I no longer flit about without purpose. I seem to have found a most
worthy goal to pursue, but that will have to be covered another time.'
The rest of the passage seems to be covered in line after line of a recurring phrase:
'All work and no play make Halifan a dull boy.'
Research subject: Perception
Added Wed Oct 30 20:21:49 2013 at level 51:
Dipping a pen into a vat of ink surrounded by shimmering ice, Halifan continued his journal within the plane of fire.
'My intiial task seemed so simple, and seemed to do well enough to grant me continued admission within the Scions. I was to study
the concept of perception in its' most basic forms - sight, sound and touch. My theory is thus: by applying shapeshifting magic
to myself and those around me, I would create the illusion of something greater than what exists. If I can impact the senses of
those around me, and apply my magic on my own body, I can turn myself into any shape and perform the same functions, including
the very real sensations of inflicted pain, that that shape could display.
A concrete example: if I believe to be a dragon, and focus my research on those around me, I will turn into a dragon. I will behave like
a dragon, because I will have convinced myself I am one, as well as those around me. I can already turn into a lion, a bat, and a host
of other creatures, I would take my research further to explore all matter of shapeshifting.'
A second entry is dated many years after the first, and the script appears to be slightly more haphazard and disorganized.
'The fools, how I hate them all! They mock me with their repeated attempts at stealing the Scepter, interrupting my research and
hoarding it in their snowy courtyard. I hate all of them. I despise them for their comraderie, their blinded mission to help the weak,
their safety net of support, and most importantly the attention that the heavens and earth bestow on them! I will see them all dead!
Ah, but one of them, irks me the most. The phoenix, Dwybaen. A captain most undeserving of the role. How did he teach himself
to take such a powerful shape. How?! I will re-focus my efforts of perception. I will master my research and seek out a suitable
compliment to this.. this.. phoenix of Light. Forget dragons, they are too predictable, too common. No, I will study how to take
shape of something that is a true bastion of darkness and night that will serve a the polar opposite to this phoenix of the Light. What
could it be? I must research further into the archives to determine what bestial manifestation will battle the phoenix. How I hate him so.
I will use that hatred to fuel my research, and whatever else I may divine. Interesting enough, previous archives have led me to a group
calling themselves Entropists, and of a skll to change shape to look like other people. I wonder if this may serve my research at all.'
Machinations on future plans
Added Wed Oct 30 20:35:23 2013 at level 51:
What does one want out of life? Surely battling the phoenix and his leeches is a worthy enough cause, but there is more
to this place than a snack every now then. For the longest time, I have acted as a dog chasing a horse, excited by the
thrill of the chase, but with no thought as to how to proceed further.
I spoke with Zhenyen on beoming Advisor, and he expressed his support but ultimate lack of ability on seeing this through.
Reksah would be the one to seek, and I have begun my search through the Underdark to find him. Whether he watches or not
I do not know, but I suppose I will find out my worth should I encounter him.
The imp, Lyristeon, fascinates me. His.. her.. its nihilistic tendencies provide me with some purpose to further my dealings.
One surely must have purpose when chasing the horse, or else why begin the chase to begin with? No, if I did not come across
the Imp in my travels I would have surely slit my wrists from boredom many moons ago. To say his presence gives me purpose
would be incorrect. Rather, his presence affirms that one can live a life of chaos so long as there is a tangible goal to pursue,
and whether the emotions of those around him can be manipulated along the way. Do I have the ability to give others 'gaping
maws,' as the Imp likes to say? Who is to say. I suppose so long as I walk the lands without slitting my wrists that is a start.
Or maybe if I slit my wrists in front of many others, and one of them sighs heavily, or sheds a tear, or a laugh, that will have
sufficed. Interesting that exploring such a concept can illicit such maddening responses. Perhaps there is more to this religion
than I have surfaced.
Mid-life crisis
Added Wed Dec 25 09:45:05 2013 at level 51:
"It's mine, it's finally mine! My precious.." he muttered, as he rolled around the black vertebra of a devil around
in his hand. Though he has not yet realized it, this ring is aging him, and will eventually kill him if he keeps it on.
Halifan has changed from his younger days. Rather, the world around him has changed and he's been forced
to adapt. Lyristeon has favored him with the Maw's mark, enjoying his antics somewhat. Reksah has seemingly
disappeared into the shadows, and his attempts to find the patron of the Fold have been met unsuccessfully.
Halifan approached Lyristeon with a proposal of sorts: to assume a more active stance within the Scions, as
their new patron. With three of them marked with the Gaping Maw, and a young shaman bearing his blessings, it
seems only fitting that this creature of chaos should provide an update in direction to an otherwise hollow home.
Halifan understands on some level that Outlanders and Scions don't mesh very well in principle, however doesn't
really care about any of that if it means that his favorite creature will have a more active hand in his group's
day to day actions.
His previous obsession with the Fortress, as they have waned in power and his nemesis, Dwybaen, has
seemingly disappeared. He has taken on a new obsession in the Spire, as they provide a nice foil with their
terrific ability to survive the Scion onslaughts far better than any of the other factions. This may be Halifan's
biggest challenge, as he is repeatedly met with resistance in his attempts to kill, maim, or otherwise influence
the actions of the Spire. He is on an unofficial task to destroy their mortal leadership in some capacity, in
exchange for what he believes will be a sturdier body.
Halifan has taken on a more personable demeanor than his younger days. In contrast to Mirozah, the evil
magus of pure hatred and death, he has taken on a more humorous, somewhat flippant, tone. He thinks
of himself as a simple scholar of the Shadow Planes trying to learn how to bring more of them into Thera
to instill a change of balance to make life more interesting for him. His initial task of studying perception
interests him in the form of being able to take the shape of anything or anyone, however not much
progress has been made here without guidance.
Dismantling of Order
Added Wed Dec 25 19:36:05 2013 at level 51:
Halifan's intensifying descent into madness, or rather his more acute understanding
of really setting his actions free, has taken a toll on one of the Spire's more seasoned Magistrates.
Einrai found himself along the Eastern Road, waiting expectantly for the vampiric Halifan to swoop down
and engage in battle with him. Einrai was tired, physically and mentally, from being taunted for his lack
of action against Halifan outside of the cities. Halifan taunted the Provincial Magistrate further still, taking
multiple forms in battle, but none as the trademark lion that Einrai was anticipating.
For hours the battle waged. Einrai found himself facing a firefly, then a ferret, then a bull, and lastly an artic wolf. All the
while, he angrily questioned the crazed so-called Drillmaster of Law as to what purpose, what madness was
taking place in between blows and songs. Finally, Einrai grew frazzled by the antics of this unstable
metamorph and threw songs of great grandeur at our multi-purpose hero.
Halifan saw his window of opportunity, and together with the muddled antics of the Gaping Maw writhing
against his arm, and the power of his magic transforming into a lion, caught the Provincial Magistrate unaware
and overextended in his abilities.
Einrai was a cautious and careful type, and was able to pry himself from battle with what little
energy he had left, and sent himself home, to relative safety. As though by muscle memory, Halifan
quickly took his winged form and flew north to Voralian City where Einrai was working with the
city healer to rejuvenate himself. Halifan quickly seized on the shocked and unprepared Magistrate,
and threw the last of his remaining energy into his lion form to bring a final clawing to Einrai. The
magistrate escaped again, but not far enough as Halifan quickly pursued outside the main cathedral
to bring a final end to the overly cautious Einrai, stealing his lat breath from him.
To further dismantle the now ghostly, and quite disturbed, magistrate, Halifan then proceeded to waltz
himself in to the authorities, much to the chagrin of Einrai, who expressed his complete lack of understanding
and deductiveness in such a ploy. Halifan had left the Provincial Magistrate, normally
a calm and collected man, beaten and utterly baffled, with his mouth gaped open.
Halifan slowly whistled to himself, ghostly as he was, while he observed the Gaping Maw on his arm
writhe and move with an increasingly frenzied movement, hungrily lapping in the aftereffects of this chaotic
turn of events.
