Description

Before you stands a young gnome mage with pale skin. His hair is dark and looks slightly unkempt. He stands nearly three-foot tall, common among his kin, but still short compared to humans. His eyes are a deep purple with a reddish hue to the iris. His clothes are pristine and adorned with gaudy symbols, mostly arcane. His eyes sparkle with delight as he takes in the world around him. Sunlight filters in through the slats on the barn door. A small gnome baby
is lying in his crib with his eyes wide open, staring at the mobile that his
father is turning above him.  A smile begins to form on his tiny face as the
lion chases the ram and the falcon flies before them.  All around him animals
bray, bleat, or crow and the sounds make his eyes light up.

Outside of the barn a large group of gnomes surround the nearly destroyed
farmhouse.  They have put their minds to the test and created a great set of
pulleys to pull the reclaimed boards back up to the roof.  A group of female
gnomes stand off to one side roasting vegetables and making a meat stew.  All
the while the young boy just smiles as the animals give chase to one another.


*A few years later*

The winds are strong at the back of a small gnome child as he runs around the
valley floor.  A small farmhouse and barn can be seen behind him, but your
focus is on the child.  He seems to be chasing around a small goat and trying
to mimic its style of running.  The kid, having been tormented enough, turns
on the boy and starts to chase him.  As you continue to observe the child you
begin to realize that the boy and the kid are just playing with one another.
The child stops for a moment and they lock eyes.  The boy seems to
concentrate and squint as he focuses on the kid.  The kid suddenly nods at
the boy as if they were communicating with one another.  A few moments
later the kid lies down in the sunny grass and the boy lies down with his
head on the kids chest.   They are fast asleep within seconds.

Storm-Borne

Added Sun Sep 28 14:48:41 2008 at level 21:

Ominous dark clouds rolled across the eastern sky.  Thunder boomed and
heralded the coming storm across the mountains of Udgaard.   Great birds of
the air were riding the drafts before the storm, climbing upward to heights
normally unreached.  Monstrous beasts scurry to find shelter from the coming
onslaught.  As the clouds roll and the thunder peals its dooming toll, a
small gnome scurries about the outside of a squat farmhouse.  He carries
boards and nails and is putting them up as fast as he can over the windows of
the little abode.  Cries of pain can be heard from the cracks between the
boards, and the gnome, hearing those cries, quickens his pace.  Rain begins
to pelt the gnome as he begins to nail the last boards into the frame of the
last uncovered window.  Having completed the task, the drenched gnome quickly
makes his way back inside the small farmhouse.

The air inside the farmhouse is warm as a nice fire is lit on the hearth.  A
large kettle of water is boiling on the stove and a large stack of rags sits
next to it.  On the table lies a small female gnome with a little belly.  Her
head is upon a pillow and her legs are up and spread.  She groans in the
pains of childbirth as the chilling wind and rain beat upon the boarded up
windows of the house.  Thunder peals and lightning flashes outside as the
woman bites down hard on a piece of cloth-covered wood. The young male gnome
is now in front of his wifes legs and is speaking to her in soothing tones,
urging her to push with all she has.  The winds pick up outside as the storm
beats against the house.  The tiny crown of a head can be seen as the woman
pushes for her baby to have life outside of the womb.  Within the same
instant of the babys head coming fully out of the womb, the gusts of wind
become to great for the house and the roof his torn from its rafters.  The
rain beats down upon the couple and the mother continues to push.  The father
shrugs off the rain and continues to help his darling wife.  The storm grows
fierce and strong but the walls of the house hold and the new baby is finally
out.  Tears of joy stream down the face of the mother and father both.

After a few moments the father looks about, shrugs his shoulders and helps
his wife to her feet.  They swaddle the boy in some of the rags that were
under the pile, and make their way to the intact barn outside.
As the happy couple lays the beautiful child in the softest place they could
find within the hay, the mother looks to her husband and says, "The winds
brought my boy upon the wings of the storm.  My beautiful storm-borne child."
