Description
This dark-elf is adorned in darkened, light-weight armor. A mask covers his
face, with a faint crimson glow visible through the eyeholes. His headwear
is adjusted to allow his pointy, obsidian ears to jut out on either side.
He nimbly moves about without making a sound. The hilt of a sword pokes
out from his cape at waist height. A few daggers can be seen tucked into
his belt. There appears to be an intentional gap in his armor on his left
wrist, revealing a shimmering mark of a coiled snake.
Role
Rogues of the underdark
Added Fri Jan 5 15:32:04 2024 at level 15:
Deep in the underdark, guards from Teth Azeleth approach a hidden cavern. As
they breach the entrance they find what they've been looking for. An old
dark-elf heads a long meeting table. Several dark-elves are accompanied by a
few duergars, humans, arials, and felar. On the walls of the cavern is a map
of the surface, marked with a strange language. The presence of the guards is
immediately noticed. The old dark-elf grins at the commander of the guards as
he tosses down a smoke bomb. The smoke clears leaving only the guards. The
only clue left behind is the map on the walls, but all the writing vanished.
The commander of the guard reports back to the matron of the first house. Her
suspicions about the rogue organization is confirmed. However, she didn't
expected their numbers would be so large or that they would be ready for her.
What she knew for certain was the old dark-elf, her brother, wanted to see
Teth Azeleth in ruins. He had been leading a band of mercenaries that was
spreading chaos in her city for centuries. They are believed responsible for
many high-profile assassinations, stolen artifacts, and sudden conflicts
between lower houses. It was her previous belief that her brother's reach did
not extend beyond the underdark. Now, she worries she greatly under-estimated
his skills and ambition.
A Coiled Serpent
Added Fri Jan 5 15:34:23 2024 at level 15:
Hizvustel comes to the surface as a new member of this secret organization of
rogues from the underdark that call themselves Coiled Serpents. They are
beginning the next phase of a plan that started before he was born. Spies
from several surface races are joining them in their plot. There mission is
the downfall of several societies within the underdark and on the surface.
First, they will profit by working as mercenaries for both sides of opposing
factions. When the current ruling parties have been infiltrated and weakened,
they will be brought down. Then, Coiled Serpents will secretly control the
rebuilding of societies from the shadows. The details of the plans are kept
highly secret and only revealed to members as needed. As he enters Galadon
for the first time, a stranger bumps into Hizvustel and slips him a small
scroll sealed with the stamp of the Coiled Serpent. Hizvustel reads the
following:
Guild: Assassins
Objectives:
- Gather intelligence about key figures on the surface.
- Study the terrain, travel routes, and battlegrounds.
- Spread fear and paranoia, posing as a killer for hire.
As soon as he is done reading it, the scroll crumbles into dust.
Joining the Order
Added Sun Jan 14 12:14:54 2024 at level 15:
The matron of the first house walks down the street in Teth Azeleth surrounded
by several guards. Most of the dark-elves she passes lower their heads as a
sign of respect. Instead of bowing, Hizvustel's face twists into a look of
disgust. Fortunately for him, it goes unnoticed by the matron but it is
noticed by someone else on the street. A dark-elf in a black robe gently
bumps into him and whispers, "Follow me if you are unhappy with the current
order of this city."
Hizvustel follows the stranger to the edge of the city where he disappears
into a hidden tunnel. Pursuing through the secret passage Hizvustel enters a
small cavern and finds himself surrounded by five dark-elves in black robes.
He notices the shimmering mark of a coiled serpent on a few of their wrists.
They do not show hostility but do make it clear he cannot freely leave. The
one that first approached Hizvustel explains the situation.
The Order of the Coiled Serpent is an organization that was started a few
centuries ago by a small faction of dark-elves that opposed a matriarchal
society. Not long after, they formed a loose allegiance with a rebel group
from Aran'gird. Each side aided the other in carrying out acts of espionage
or terror against the city rulers. As the years went on the groups grew in
numbers. They also made allegiances with a few similar organizations on the
surface, all with the common goal of bringing down the current rulers of their
societies.
Hizvustel is being recruited to join them. He has been under surveillance and
deemed suitable for approach. If he accepts, Hizvustel will be sent to work
on the surface and be given further directives as the plans unfolds. They do
not say what happens if he refuses but he is certain he knows enough to be a
liability to them and a refusal means he won't leave the cavern alive.
However, the surveillance team is rarely wrong and Hizvustel is excited to
join. A magical brand burns the mark of the coiled serpent onto his wrist.

A network of bounty hunters, thieves, and spies
Added Fri Feb 23 11:17:16 2024 at level 35:
After being a bit confused by his initial mission to pose as a bounty hunter,
Hizvustel has come up with a plan to do so and now also sees the benefits of
this role.
In order to appear as a bounty hunter, Hizvustel began taking private
contracts. While his first few targets did escape, it is helping him to build
a reputation as being motivated by bounty collecting. It is a plausible
enough reason to kill that no one will suspect his true motives of societal
destruction.
Hizvustel has also begun efforts to form a network of bounty hunters, thieves,
and spies. Not only does this add to his cover story but it comes with the
benefit of allies that can be used as informants and pawns. After a few more
parties express desire to work with him, he will begin acting as the public
face of the network and advertise their services. They will take bounties on
people and items, or work as spies. This will enhance his reputation as a
bounty hunter, allow him to profit from real contracts, and make it believable
when he puts out fake contracts to cause chaos and distrust.
He suspects this is what was expected of him by The Coiled Serpents. A
reputable bounty hunter with influence over the rogue network may gain close
ties to influential people. This could facilitate some high-profile
assassinations when chaos starts breaking out across Thera.
The Next Phase for the Coiled Serpent
Added Tue May 14 21:43:22 2024 at level 40:
A cloaked figure, with the mark of the coiled serpent on his wrist,
slips Hizvustel a note at the entrance to his guild. New objectives
are written within:
- Begin targeting Imperial Blades and advertising bounties on them.
- Make hints that another sect is behind the contracts.
- Infiltrate the Scions of Eternal Night. Assess if we will benefit
- from their power or if they should be stopped.
As soon as he is done reading it, this scroll too crumbles into dust.
Conflicting orders and an executive decision
Added Mon Jun 24 05:43:11 2024 at level 42:
Difficulty finding bards to do his bidding and a quick induction into Scion
has left Hizvustel with conflicting objectives. If he were try to keep up
the bounty hunter ruse, it was likely to cost him his place in the Chasm. He
found the objective of learning the secrets of the Scions as more important
in the long run than sewing discord within the Empire. Now, he will fully
embrace the role of being a Scion. This is his best chance of learning their
secrets and either stopping them or harnessing the power they hold for the
Coiled Serpents.
