Description
This giant is clad in hefty, metal armor that dispatch being worn in
appearance is clearly well maintained. He has a steady, long stride, and
covers a good bit of ground with each step. He is a storm giant, towering
over the average humanoid at nearly thirteen feet in height. His
intimidating armor hangs over nearly his entire body save for one
shoulder, missing a pauldron, and left completely bare. On this patch of
pale-blue skin, he has marked a tattoo of a rising phoenix upon his skin.
This tattoo and skin stand out in stark contrast to the rest of his
armored persona. He appears quite muscular, and the ease with which he
walks under his armor speaks to his strength. His eyes are a pale gray
and, while not emotionless, are not as warm or compassionate as others of
his kin. He observes his surroundings with a hardened, almost savage,
gaze. Aside from the pale-blue skin, his hair is wild and kelp-green. The
thick locks are tied back loosely into a pony-tail out of his face. He
carries about his way with steady, determined steps. A confident wariness
almost palpable about him.
Role
Hoshkean Rai
Added Mon Oct 3 15:20:20 2022 at level 11:
Hoshkean is. He simply, is. He did not grow up. He did not have a father
or a mother. Hoshkean came into being, was created, as he is. This is not
to say he is immortal or timeless. He bleeds, sleeps, sweats and eats as
any mortal. His muscles burn and he feels the toll of time.
He has convictions and belief. Strong ones. He simply does not have a
past to speak of. He is bent on the Destruction of the wicked. He is
created to bring redemption through death to those who walk in darkness.
He is strong and savage and will not grant mercy nor quarter to those who
steep themselves in the wicked.
Hoshkean feels most at home in the Lyceum and feels almost as if he came
to life from the pages of a book there. He has spent some times of his
youth steeping himself in the texts, the closest thing to home that he
has. To this end, he has fervently read the texts that Shokai wrote, or
those that concern Shokai and the Maran. He believes that it is his duty
to act as a Maran. As stated in the Maran Kal in the Lyceum, Maran means
Wrath in Shokai's old tongue. Per the Kal, Hoshkean views any and all who
would oppose the Light his enemy. The wicked deserve only a swift death.
Everything else about him, is secondary to this duty to the Maran. It is
convenient then, that Hoshkean does not have baggage or attachment to the
past.
Hoshkean wishes to live an entire life devoted to the cause of the Maran,
and once it ends he hopes to be reincarnted as the Spirit of Wrath, or
the Maran Tara'bal, and continue to fight. This singular cause of the
destruction of the wicked is what drives him. To this end, he has humbly
taken the last name Rai, in honor of Sune Rai, the legendary Captain of
the Maran and Shrine Guardian of Shokai.
He knows there is a chance that some may wish to extinguish his Light,
prevent him from living this life, and return him to the inanimate pages
of the Lyceum. This is not an option for Hoshkean, not while so much
darkness walks.
Hoshkean is one dimensional in many respects. And that's fine. His
purpose is singular. Destroy the wicked at all costs save one. The
sanctity of the Light.
His zealousness lends itself only to one profession- that of a Shaman.
OOC Note: I arbitrarily imagined Shokai's Shaman Paths as Seraph's Wing,
Desolation and Divine Anger to help me brainstorm the character.
Obviously any path is a gift and the Imms doing the challenge may have
their own thought, but just thought I'd share where I was coming from as
far as thematically/in my head!
Belief and the Maran Kal. Questions and companions of interest.
Added Wed Oct 5 20:42:57 2022 at level 21:
Belief. That is what one must have. Perhaps Hoshkean knew it before.
But he certainly knows it now. As he sat in Shokai's Shrine within the
Graveyard of the Gods, he heard a faint voice within the beating of his
own heart. Speaking of how the Skyborn faith lives on in himself and
those who believe.
Hoshkean immediately had a moment of clarity. He thought about the three
tenets of Shokai's faith. Victory. Strength. Destruction.
And it made sense. Belief. Strength of conviction. That was the key to
the Destruction of the wicked, and the Light's Victory. He briefly
celebrated with some Heralds by having a copy of the Maran Kal from the
Lyceum made. He carries this manuscript around with him now, it is his
most treasured possession as it is representative of the Skyborn, and
something tangible he can hold. Hoshkean has decided that he would like
to see a copy of this manuscript in the Hall of Light within the
Fortress.
Now, Hoshkean turns his attention fully on the Fortress and his path
toward the Maran. As he seasons himself in battle, he becomes ever more
resolute in his path and knows it is the right, the only one, for him.
Duty is not a choice. It is a calling, a divine mandate, and something
that Hoshkean throws himself into whole-heartedly. He may not be the most
jovial person, but he tries to show a softer side, even if it is not
second nature to him. It is something he struggles with.
Hoshkean is still confused as to how he came to be. He speaks about it,
from time to time, hoping to find others like him. He found one, who also
worships an old Faith. Oranthelu. But Oranthelu spoke of being in combat
a long time ago. And just all of a sudden being here. He has a past,
unlike Hoshkean. He also believes Corrlaan is merely lost.
There are similarities, but Hoshkean feels differently about Shokai.
Shokai is not lost. He is simply dimmed. His power lives on in Hoshkean,
and he hopes that he can offer Oranthelu some help in his own path. He
also believes there is some similarity between Oranthelu coming from the
past and Hoshkean simply coming into being....but what?
Shokai's Avatar
Added Sun Oct 30 15:33:04 2022 at level 51:
Hoshkean has met the strange pilgrim, Lalois Rershanfur. She studies
faiths, and is fascinated by the event that led to Hoshkean's creation
and those like him. He likes her. Her....liveliness. Hoshkean believes
the she knows even more thans he lets on.
She has said to him, and explained some, of what he is. That he is a
mortal manifestation of Shokai itself, and has been since his creation.
And obviously, the other Avatars are similar.
Wranilig, the Avatar of Aarn. And Oranthelu, Corrlaan's Sworn, have both
drifted into obscurity. Hoshkean has heard of others. Names of the
wicked. He worries that those who represent the Light's Lords are
outmatched by those who represent the Wicked's. However, he is commited
to living out his life in it's entirety. He also has a desire to lead the
Fortress. And witht he Marshall's persisting absense he believes this may
be attainable. Hoshkean wants to help those of the Fortress with their
War, as the war itself is cathartic for him. Thinking about his creation,
is stressful.
He is scared that Miripirisir, a gnomish researcher for Ishuli, is going
to decide after all his blood tests, that he can force Hoshkean and the
others back into the Lyceum for good. But this cannot happen. Hoshkean
must remain in Thera, to fight the Wicked. Who better to oppose the
machinations of Beroxxus, Lyristeon, or Eshval than the manifestation of
Shokai?
And finally, Lalois Rershanfur's last words echo in his mind. As he
drifted from the Graveyard of the Gods to the Land of the Living, she
called out to him that "the truth is yours to do with what you will"
But Hoshkean isn't sure what the truth is. He has set his eyes to
fighting the wicked, no matter what comes. Wheter it be a manifestation
of Beroxxus or the foul Palace north of Balator, or something of the
future- he will bear the Phoenix's flames against them until his last
breath.
Hoshkean's Mistake
Added Sun Oct 30 23:43:19 2022 at level 51:
Hoshkean was hunting Enorgol and Nunthdhrag within the Sands of Sorrow.
In a moment of over-eagerness, he rended the earth and a hapless, lost
warrior fell in. The only good thing about this tragedy was the death was
swift.
Hoshkean is troubled. He understands the capriciousness nature of the
elements, and their destructive fury. He has prided himself on being
very, very careful. Faoceet, Gvazgos and others have oft tried to summon
young ones of the light to die in his earth rendings and he has adeptly
avoided all those accidents. However, this time, he did not avoid it.
It was a moment of err, he thought that the lost warrior was not one of
the more innocents. But it reinforces a lesson that all Maran know, and
the great risk to the path he walks. He knew it wasn't much, but he
prayed to the Lords of the Light, before going to the bank and taking out
half of his savings. He went to Jolinar, pleaded with him to make sure
the gold found it's way to the lost warriors campaigning in the sands of
sorrow, and gave him the gold.
He understands the gravity of this mistake, and is determiend to try to
avoid anything else like it at all costs.
Hoshkean's second mistake, but this time...Growth.

Another time. A violent, wicked gorilla, burning and pillaging the
farmlands. A hapless farmer. Hoshkean. Rended earth- a felled farmer.
He immediately disengaged, distraught over what he'd done. Professed his
guilt to Baerinika and began to reflect. But of course, the War carried
on and through. Until one of Azorinne's priestesses came to the Fortress.
Shepherding a girl who was looking for her father. To make matters worse,
the girl fell in the chaotic assaults on the Fortress- although not by
one of the Fortress, near as could be told.
Azorinne's Chosen and Hoshkean spoke at length. He offered to sacrifice
his dangerous prayers. But that, he learned, was not the answer.
Responsible use. Learning how to move past mistakes without hamstringing
yourself, is. To that end, he made a pilgrimage to Shepherd's Green. It's
Hoshkean's belief that he could never make amends for slaying one of the
Light. What he could do, though, was pay some sort of reparations- even
if they were never enough. He found the Sirine's Inn, the gathering area
for the local community of the fallen farmer. And he stocked the cellar
with a plethora of food.
Furthermore, he packed a bag of foodstuff specially for the farmer's
family- in case they did not wish to come to the Inn in their period of
mourning- and he paid handsomely to see it delivered to the family in
need. He also went around putting out fires started by the War.
It was eye-opening, to take time to do that. Something he'd often run
right by and not think about. He set about doing a few other tasks for
the community, and while this will wound will ache within him for the
rest of his life, he felt some semblance of growth and was glad that
Azorinne's priestess made the pilgrimage to see him.
He realizes that he is the Marshall now. A beacon. And, he has to hold
himself to even higher standards. Now is not the time to stumble and
fall. Now is the time to stand tall and act as the Phoenix- Rise.
Hoshkean's Continued Struggles
Added Wed Nov 9 17:35:51 2022 at level 51:
Hoshkean has slain another one of the light. Deep in a dark mineshaft,
beset by Iliunezyn, small nightwalkers and druk'trar, flying around in
the chaos. He turned to the lava and stone that feels so natural to him
and a dwarven miner walking by perished.
Perhaps, Hoshkean feels, this is why aggressive Maran don't live long.
The burden on their soul becomes too heavy and they die on the field of
battle. Perhaps that makes it 'fair'.
He struggles, knowing that sacrifices must be made, but also knowing that
he must be more responsible. He knows, he must make an amends to the
dwarven people. To this end, he has decided to seek out young dwarves,
who are able to walk on their own two feet, and help them where he may.
Bequeathing them with armor, weapons and coin. Hopefully ensuring that
they will be able to protect, defend and progress their kin where he
himself has failed.
