Way of the Crimson Eagle

Again!
Hyu sighed quietly and lifted his aching body off the ground where he had been
unceremoniously flung onto his back by his teacher. Rage boiled inside him.
Concentrating on his breathing he tried to focus his rage while his teacher
circled him slowly. 'Good Hyu! The key to victory is to control and focus
your rage, then strike with overwhelming force and precision! Such is the
way of the Crimson Eagle!
Hyu and his teacher fought for several more hours. Hyu refusing to admit defeat
despite ending up o his back again and again. Eventually though his teacher
ended their lesson for the day.
'Enough! Tis growing dark Hyu and it is a long walk for you back through
the woods to the base camp. We shall continue your lessons another time.'
Hyu nodded, too exhausted to even speak. It was a long walk through
the woods not to mention the pass of Gol'Galath with the ever present
danger of running into orcs. And he was starving. Gathering his things
Hyu took a sip at the fountain set within these ruins of a war-torn city
where he came when he had a chance to break away from the Third Brigade to
further hone his unarmed combat skills. His teacher was an old relic of a
bygone era and still payed homage to the immortal Lord Vassagon and was the
husband of the healer who still healed those who came to visit the shrine.
Waving goodbye, Hyu set off back towards the base camp.
Way of the Engineer

Reaching the gates of the dwarven base camp, Hyu snapped a crisp salute
towards Kentner Stonefist, Lieutenant of the Third Brigade who was pacing
back and forth before the gates. Nodding at Hyu, Kenter stopped his pacing
long enough to bark out 'Report to Engineer Frankleighter right away!'
Hyu sighed inwardly his body bone tired from the long walk after such a
long day. Yet at the same time excitement moved his feet towards the mountain
where the dwarves had built their camp. Entering a small office room
strewn with charts, graphs, and various instruments of measurement, Hyu
snapped off another crisp salute towards a nearly bald dwarf who stood in
contemplative silence gazing at a huge map that covered the northern wall.
'Ahh Private Strongarm, good to see you. I have here the designs you created
for the new trench defenses. Rather ingenius I must say. Utilizing the
orc's natural tendancy toward's cowardice to deal extra damage to their
front line by setting up traps that spring on retreating enemies rather
than the first wave is good thinking. I had a few suggestions though I'd
like to go oer with you.'
So Hyu and Wilem Frankleighter, Engineer of the Third Brigade spent
many hours talking of stress points, cogs, gears, and the other jargon
of the engineering trade. Despite his exhastion the chance to speak with
and actually be praised by such a great engineer such as Wilem infused Hyu
with new energy.
'Remember Hyu, every device has a weakness, no matter how great your designs
it shall contain one. Know your weaknesses and guard against them well, find
and exploit those within your enemies designs. This is the key to Victory.'
Hyu saluted and turned crisply as Wilem gestured for him to go. It had been
a long day and night but fruitful. Time for sleep.
Berserker's Rage part I

The sound of shouting and the warning bell roused Hyu from his sleep. By the
look of the sunlight peeking through the tent he shared with five other
troopers it was just after dawn. Quickly throwing on his armor and
grabbing his axe, Hyu rushed towards his designated position where already he
could see the rest of his troop gathered. Snapping off a quick salute he
took his place on the line and listened intently as their captain barked
out their orders. Orcs had infiltrated the camp along with one of those
foul duergar bastards. One who wielded magic to boot.
The sound of an explosion interrupted their Captain as dirt and blood
splattered around them. With a deafening roar a pack of orc brutes broke
into sight seemingly out of thin air and amongst them was what appeared to be
a dark elf dressed in glittering robes and chanting what surely must be a spell.
Their Captain signalled a charge and all of them rushed towards the orcish
horde without a moment's hesitation, their short legs churning up the ground
like pistons. The first wave of orcs fell quickly to their blades but the mage
among them was too strong, his spells sending Hyu's brothers in arms to fiery
deaths. Hyu nearly met the same fate but for a slip in the muddy ground that
surrounded the camp. With a roar, his rage beating a bloody drumbeat into
his skull, Hyu rolled back onto his feet and focused on his enemy.
Berserker's Rage part II

All that stood between Hyu and the mage was the burnt corpses of his comrades.
Fear gripped his heart but the fear was rapidly drowned out by a rising sea
of red-rimmed rage. Hyu tried to concentrate on his breathing as his sensai had
taught him and control the rage but there with the fallen bodies of his troop
right in front of him it was impossible. Hyu let forth a bellow that resounded
through the small muddy valley the camp nestled in and launched himself like
an arrow straight towards the dark-elven mage who spotting him had
began chanting and pointing a finger at Hyu.
As Hyu sped towards the mage it was almost as if Time itself slowed down.
Hyu was a soldier but he had not been in many batles though he was always
ranked at the top in exercises due to the extra training he had taken on.
This sensation was new and despite the rage that filled him and the
murderous intent in his heart Hyu had a thought to spare to marvel at it.
It was as if his spirit had transcended his body and he looked down upon
the battlefield, his mind and soul calmed though the blood in his body
raged with unstoppable passion. He noticed so much that he had at first
missed in his reckless berserker madness. He noticed that the mage was
sweating profusely and seemed tired, he noticed that but a foot from him
was a spear dropped by one of his comrades and he could smell somehow that
whatever protections the mage had at the start of the fight had fallen from
the strain of protecting so many orcs and combatting his comrades. This all
came together in a flash of deep insight and without further thought Hyu
dropped his axe mid-stride, ducked into a roll just as a fireball whizzed past
his ear and in one beautiful motion grabbed and flung the spear at the mage.
Hyu was not proficient with spears but some dwarven God maybe Lord Thror himself
guided his hand that day for the spear flew true and impaled the mage who
grabbed at it in suprise gurgling out his last curses at Hyu and falling over in
a heap. Hyu still rushed forward towards the mage his moment of clarity
banished by rage and he leaped onto the body and began beating it his rage
burning him as hotly as the flames that danced around the camp.
Berserker's Rage finale

He did not know how long this continued but eventually he felt a hand on his
shoulder. Reacting from instinct Hyu swung around swinging his vision still
blurred by rage. He felt the impact of his fist smashing into flesh and drew
back for another blow when suddenly he felt himself turned about and he was on
his back with familiar eye's staring sadly into his. It was his teacher!
'Hyu! Please calm yourself. Breathe! Focus your thoughts! Let the rage
support you like the wings of Lord Vassagon not control you!'
Hyu shuddered his thoughts already beginning to calm at the sound of his sensais
familiar and comforting voice. 'Listen Hyu, you have been a good
student. I have watched you and taught you all I know but alas there are
things I cannot teach for I am human and you are dwarf and the rage within your
kind is as much a part of you as the wings are of an arial. I saw your
berserk rage but I also saw that moment of clarity where for a moment you
possessed the spirit of Lord Vassagon and fought like a Crimson Eagle!'
'I am sorry you lost your comrades in this battle, but such is the way of War. What
you have found this day however I beg of you to explore and strengthen! It
is the true berserker rage of your kind that you possess. Given some years of
proper training that rage given focus will be a furious weapon that could very
be what brings back tales of the strength of the Crimson Eagle. Go my
student and become stronger. I shall remain here and help rebuild your camp.
Take this note to a man named Thrym who is a fellow teacher of War in the city
of Balator. He shall show you what to do with all that rage.
Some days passed as Hyu first gathered his belongings and got permission
from his superiors to receive training in Balator. Once given Hyu bid the camp
farewell, his heart still heavy from the losses of his comrades but at the
same time lightened at the prospect of the journey ahead.
Way of the Battlerager

Hyu spent several months training under Thrym along with the other
students in the academy, honing his skills with various weapons and more
importantly learning to use his rage to advantage and lengthen the time he
could retain that moment of clarity in the midst of chaos and war.
Though far from a master...he was improving. It filled his heart with
pride that he had grown stronger but he still wished to test himself
against stronger foes.
One day Thrym took Hyu aside and explained the Way of the Battleragers.
He explained of their history and of the initial betrayal which had set into
motion long centuries of war. He reminded Hyu that Lord Vassagon had been one
of the greatest of Battleragers in His time and that if Hyu truly wished to be
a master of combat then he must fight alongside the greatest warriors Thera
knew the same as Lord Vassagon had done in his time.
Much of the lore Hyu already knew for what young dwarf did not know of the
special band of warriors led by Lord Thror. Still Thrym's words resolved
Hyu on deciding to enlist into this war against the magi so that he
could as Lord Vassagon before had done be purified iin the fires of a
true cause to lend his rage purpose.
For what Thrym had explained as the way of the battlerger was to
hone one's courage and pride to a fine edge by dousing one's very
soul in the fires of war and sharpening it with the dedication that
can only ome from fully throwing oneself into a righteous cause.
Hyu like many dwarves had no love for magic and the rage he felt still
within whenever he thought of how easily his troop had been scattered and
slain by a single mage with a few mumbled words filled him with resolve.
He would stand among the greatest and one day rather than being a student
of war he would be a master of it and bring that knowledge to his kin
so that never again under his watch would those beside him fall to such
cowardly tactics. No dwarf deserved to die without first spitting in the
eye of his enemy as they crossed weapons in true warrior fashion.
Hyu swore he would become the strongest, the most relentles killer of
mages to walk Thera and he would raise the banner of the Crimson Eagle
for all to know that its shriek of rage was once again to be feared.
Interlude

Hyu raised his axe, greeting the Commander in dwarven fashion. Hyu felt good
that the Commander of the Village was a fellow dwarf. However he had come over
the years to appreciate the diversity within the Village of Battle. He had
even gained a brother in spirit if not flesh in the hulking form of the
minotaur Mredenkal who would have done the Crimson Eagle's proud in their
heyday, for he was a proud and noble bull who embodied the essence of a true
berserker.
Today was a special day within the village. A challenge had been issued by the
destructor himself. They were to go forth in a quest to bring fear into the hearts
of the enemy on each continent. Hyu puffed his chest with pride and gripped
his axe resolutely, swearing to bring back many skulls to the skull throne and
win the prize not for the sake of the prize itself but for the pride of being
counted amongst the ebst within the village alongside the drillmaster, the
commander, and the mageslayer.
So they set forth, Hyu pairing with the Commander himself and they quickly
brought down many magi. Coming to the end of their journey, they gathered
within the village where the destructor praised them all for their prowress.
However the most important lesson imparted was a lesson about rage, a topic Hyu
was familiar with. The destructor explained that rage was what fueled the will
that allowed them to deflect magic and what they felt within their hearts that
allowed them tos trike such heavy blows. Rage was the very underpinnings of
the village way of life and it must be embraced like a fire. Fire must burn
within a villagers soul and refuse to be quenched. Hyu had always felt
great rage and over the years had learned to focus his rage to his enemies
dismay. Still the words of the Destructor carried great weight with him and
resonated. Hyu swore he would embrace the fire to an even greater degree and
strive even harder to burn a swath of fire across Thera until the magi were
all dead.
