Description

Not unusual for an elf. A few inches over six feet tall, slender, fair of skin and vibrant of eyes. Ears tapered to a narrow tip. Flaxen hair tied back, perhaps for ease of care or efficiency, or even to keep free of eyes during combat. That possibility occurs to you because about the body are strapped various implements of violence, some blunt, some sharp, all well cared for if not not fancy or pretty. The movements you observe are fluid and graceful, even if prosaic, and the clothing seems to fit particularly well. One thing's for sure,

Role

The history of his war against magic (part I)

Added Fri Apr 5 23:25:10 2013 at level 5:
An old story. Second son of a second son of a second son and so on,
always needing to be perfect, but always "just in case". Even so,
Ieralaine took his studies and training seriously, eventually rising
to a sergeant in the palace guards. For several years he he did his
duty protecting the palace and the King, the Princess and the rest of
royal family. But the one thing that constantly intruded on their
lives and safety were these mages, coming and rummaging in the guest
rooms, stealing things. In particular a rod of some magic power.
No matter what he and his fellow guards did they would come in, sometimes
under cover of magic, other times simply killing their way through good
fine soldiers, to take what they came for. Over the years it became
a real thorn in his side, an obsession. But even so it might never have
become a full fledged life changing issue if not for The Day.

The Day dawned like most others. Shift changes on schedule, eating in
rotation, no more than the usual dignitaries visiting and having audiences
with the King or meetings with various officials of House Darsylon. But
before long even the soldiers, the men who either lacked magical talent
or simply chose a life without it, could feel a charge in the air, an
electricity that had nothing to do with true lightning. The merchants
in the market closed early, the locals spent more time indoors than is
usual. And then, anticipated but impossible to expect, it happened.
A high pitched shriek, somehow, enhanced to be heard throughout the land,
drew every eye and ear. Inside the palace, Ieralaine rushed with his men
to the King's room to add what security could be had. Instinct.

The history of his war against magic (part II)

Added Fri Apr 5 23:25:37 2013 at level 5:
But quick as they were, too late did they arrive. Wide eyed they serveyed
the scene. The King lay on the ground, blood gushing out from his body as
a river flows downhill, spurting and gurgling in sickening red. Five mages,
shockingly two among them showing the features of elfin kind, stood above
him, holding his royal accoutrements, his Sphere, his Ring, and more.
Before any of the guards could do anything but gape the mages each spoke
strange words and with a pop disappeared entirely from view!

This was the last straw for Ieralaine. Magic so corrupted, so twisted these
mortals that even some of elfin kind were reduced to murder and theft from
their own kind. No more is this an individual or individuals problem. This
is pervasive. This is growing. This must be stopped.

Why strength

Added Fri Apr 5 23:26:23 2013 at level 5:
Strength is not just being strong
Being part of the palace guard means Ieralaine has met and dealt with people
of all races. He is fit and healthy for an elf, but he is under no illusion
that compared to most of the races of thera he is quite weak, physically.
But because of his upbringing, he has always been instilled with a sense of
dedication, committment, of strength of spirit and soul. It's not as though
he is a monk, free of sin, nor is he devoid of all distraction. He's no more
or less quick to laugh or to anger than any other, most likely. No, what he
speaks of and more importantly tries to live is strength of character, of
the knowledge that in the end, one can only truly rely on oneself. Friends,
family, they are worthy, and to be cherished and understood when wanting to be
helpful. But things of importance must be done yourself, and if he does not
have the strength to accomplish something of importance, then he won't do it
until he does have that strength, until he learns how to achive it himself.
It's always a matter of judgment. Someone wants to buy him a drink? Pass along
a spare weapon? Of course there's no problem with such things. But take down
an enemy? No, such is for himself.

Early forging

Added Thu Apr 11 09:44:23 2013 at level 26:
Life for Ieralaine was never easy, but if he is honest with himself he would
admit that the first years away from Darsylon were harder than he expected. All
life is a continuing test, but still it was more than he'd anticipated. But
those are the best challenges, he now knows, and getting through them all
the stronger makes them worthwhile. Finding and striking his first fatal blow
against the mages was a strong point for him, but even that was not how
he would have chosen. The mages all hid in the cloak of invisibility, so
he was forced to simply stand about and make of himself a bit of bait, like
a worm on a hook. And in time he caught his fish, a dark knight called Madoc.
It was a close battle, closer than he thought it would be, but he was the stronger
in the end. Moments later he came again to Tahren, who he'd met with many times
already to speak of tainted items, and pledged himself to the war against magic.

But that victory was part of a longer period of defeat and even death. Many
deaths. One where everything, even the very dead flesh of his corpse, was gone, lost
forever. His body took the toll, and his mind and spirit felt the chill of
weakening fire. But thankfully he was made of sterner stuff, and, resolute, he
continued. Life as an applicant was the most difficult. No need to elaborate on all
the difficulties of being so marked, they are commonly known, and he suffered them
all. But the crucible is also the best place to learn and grow. New tactics, new
confidence in the lay of these lands outside Darsylon, both to chase and to escape.
Nothing teaches better than defeat. Like hunger is the best of sauces. And in
time he earned the right to earn a hut, from a duerg of all people. he takes
his role seriously and while not a particularly stern man, he is also not prone to
great outbursts of emotion or joy, either.

Finally, he continues to hope to meet with the Lord Thror. He has made his intention
known, with a visit to the Lord's smithy. Now he lives as he think right, and knows
the Lord is watching, always.

Some developing character traits

Added Tue Apr 16 19:43:03 2013 at level 41:
Being part of the guard, and now a village, hiding and secrecy are
signs of weakness for him, and he does not respond to anyone who talks
to him from hiding. If they do not show themselves, he simply ignores the "someone"
assuming they are lying and not to be trusted. If you wish to speak, show yourself
and speak. Otherwise, it's likely a flat transmuter or some other hidden
enemy.

Likewise he does not speak to Texevar unless necessary for village purposes.
He already has the usual distrust of dark elves, but he could get over that
as he did for Arratok a duerg. With Texevar it is specific. He watched Texevar
jump in on a fight between a thief and an orc, making it a gang on the orc.
This showed both cowardice and weakness, let alone lack of focus. He simply does
not trust him and likely never will.

He gives no quarter once he has a determined enemy. Someone chooses to attack
him, more than once, but then later says they don't want to, trying to reoly
on villager not attacking a non-mage, that is folly. Enemies do not get to
pick their time and terrain. If they make the choice to be an enemy, then they
will accept the consequences.

He is unafraid to die, and dedicated to the fight, as shown by his many battles.
Because of this, he may sometimes seem reckless. But he does not think so, and really is
not, it is more a judgment call each time, and not all calls work out. That just means he
may take more risks than someone else.

Affirmation of the cause and the physical toll it takes

Added Mon May 13 18:26:54 2013 at level 51:
Much has happened since last I wrote. I am far older, far stronger and, in some ways,
somewhat weaker. Wiser perhaps, a bit. Certainly more than the guard I once was,
though there is honor and pride in that, too. No, I cannot say something is better or
worse in value, but I believe what I do now, what I have now been doing for years, serves
at least as much in good, and I think far more, for far greater people, all the world in
fact. Defending a royal family, a good and noble family, was worthwhile. Defending an
entire world from what I have seen and have learned and now know as peril of magic
is more so, and comes with far greater consequences.

Weaker I am, in body. The fighting and skirmishing I knew when I was young is nothing
compared to the battles and blood of real war. A seemingly endless and un-end-able
war. The few who have come to see the evil of magic and the need to fight it have been
doing so for so long, even to one of my kind, that only the luck of surviving fragments of
tales can keep the history alive. Many is the mage who has said to me that I do not fight
a war, but rather a ghost of a war, that we can never win, and never will win, but merely use
it as an excuse to kill. That we are savage brutes who simple choose this losing cause as
a means to always have enemies to fight. How wrong they are! My kind is frail, and even
for one of us I am now much diminished, the temporary deaths making my vitality half of what
it once was. Never would I wish this on another, let alone seek for myself, but for the
unshakeable certainty that it is needed. Demanded. Down to the core of thera, and the core
of my being. The war must be fought, and, I pray, won. It is with great sadness when I am
forced to spill the blood of one of the light, a mage of the fortress perhaps, or one who guards
her, and I always entreat them to see the corruption of magic and put it aside. But the lure
of such power proves too great and they continue their ways. I will not stop trying to show
them how they endanger all, but still it is not something done lightly. On the other hand I
feel nothing but pure satisfaction when I take the life of some imperial mage or scion or others
who live in darkness or the gray, and who live in wonton taint. Let their fates be a lesson
to others, and maybe, hopefully, deter even one child from taking the first path toward
damnation.

The flipside of the toll is the personal growth

Added Mon May 13 18:28:25 2013 at level 51:
But if I am weaker in vitality, those same toils, those same trials by fire and blood have
given me strength in greater proportion. I was not weak when I arrived, but I was certainly
more fluid, or perhaps more brittle? Aspects of both I guess. You cannot forge a true weapon
without fire and water. You cannot forge a true warrior without fire and blood. I have now seen
much of both. And while I, or anyone really, will ever be a finished forging, still I am now more
like steel than the iron my people cannot touch. Stronger, more flexible when necessary,
and able to withstand greater punishment while doling out the same. A crude and perhaps
cliched metaphor, I know, but useful nonetheless. And as always the greatest leaps, the
greatest quenching, comes from and is needed during the greatest fires, the greatest trials.
I had grown complacent perhaps, or maybe just somewhat despondent, and forgotten that.
I was reminded by the Destructor and Hildebran and others of ancient lore, and with their
brand they rekindled my own fire, and I went on to some success. But more important
than that day's events, are the lasting lessons it's an example of, which stay with me.
The Lord Thror's message is as true to me now as it was hundreds of years ago, but now
I acknowledge it with the wisdom of experience, not the homage of ignorance. And I give
thanks.

A few mundane matters though, which I will share with you and you alone. The dark elf,
Texevar, has if not redeemed himself at least shown himself to be a worthy fighter in the
war, and if I am to claim any level of enlightenment and wisdom I must acknowledge when
someone has changed. What he did and that I saw, he did and I saw. But years have
passed and I must give him the credit he is due for showing courage as much as any other
villager, and doing his work as his path in the village determines with competence. So of him
I will say no more.

The drillmaster, Brizlin, does not impress, and in fact I, and at least two others that have
spoken of it to me, are curious and somewhat disturbed by accession to leadership.
For me, my greatest concern is his departure refrain, whatever it takes. I cannot think of
a motto more antithetical to our ways. If someone tried to come up with something that
is the opposite of the village's beliefs they would be hard pressed to do better. Whatever
it takes? Fighting as many then? Using magic then? Our motto should be we shun much
and if we die so be it but better that than succumbing to the whatever it takes philosophy.
I worry that it will infect young huts. The time may come when I might need to challenge
him for his position in the circle, before the gods. We shall see.

Two Unpleasant Topics

Added Mon May 13 18:36:42 2013 at level 51:
First, though I have grown and am not a young man anymore, still I find that some things
still annoy me, and likely always will. Noviask, out of nowhere, insulting me for attacking
him and the palace when other mages, nexuns, are also awake. As if he is somehow not
a mage? And not knowing what else I may have already done and fought or why I was there?
Truly infuriating. Hiders, who insist on speaking without being visible to the eye. As if some
disembodied nameless voice is to be listened to or trusted. Insanity! The defeated, who
complain when something is taken by saying you cannot use that. Tahren makes great
use of such things, and it is important. Others in the village might need something, and
it is important. Anything can be sold for gold, which can be used to repair my armor and
weapons, or for a thief in their guild. Truly stupid whining. These things upset me and I
realize that is causing me some internal grief, but it is as it is. And now you know, too.

And lastly, recently I was confronted by the Goddess Baerinika.
I was at the fortress hunting Oshui, a truly corrupted mage who more than most needs to
be stopped, sadly, and to whom I spoke and tried words, knowing it would be fruitless.
Oshui, like most mages, puts other's lives over his own, letting others bleed and die for
him. Magic is selfishness, as I know and have seen, but here it was worse, for one who
claims dedication to helping others and saving others continued to let others stand and
take blows in his stead. After a few skirmishes with those Oshui hid behind, Baerinika
commanded me to leave the fortress, though she couched it in other terms. And then
she chastised me for breaking the truce between the village and the fortress, and going
against the commander's orders. She was and is wrong, and I told her so. But you should
know of this, if you deal with the gods one day.

As I told her, I did nothing wrong, and in fact did everything very right by village standards,
because we are charged with hunting, finding and destroying mages wherever they may be.
We cannot take the items of cabals that are not enemies, such as the fortress or spire or
outlanders, but if a mage hides there, we not only may but should enter and get to the mage.
If the guardian falls, we simply let the item stay, or give it to a non-mage cabalmate of the
mage. We, and I, are there to kill the mage, not take the item. And that is why I was there.

I said to her I was not surprised she was wrong, and did not know the ways of the village, for she
is not one of us, and would have little reason to know. But as a Goddess she has such great power
that even when wrong it can bring calamity for a mere mortal. I may already be suffering some sort
of impact of that day's events, but there is nothing else to be done now. I only hope in the future
such things will be avoided. Imagine. Thror telling some enemy of ours "do not come in here"!

The last bit

Added Mon May 13 18:37:15 2013 at level 51:
Preposterous. But that is what she did, stepping in as she did. I obeyed, as commanded by
the tablet, and left immediately. But the corruption of magic will not be safe anywhere, even
the fortress. For their own good as well as all thera's.

For the record books

Added Sun May 26 15:21:07 2013 at level 51:
When the pbf comes here's to note
Role chapters atdded at level 41, back on april 16. No role xp
Role chapters added at level 51, two weeks ago. Nothing.
Killing an actual mage mob - specifically not killing a non-mage mob,
gets me turned neutral. It's wrong for a battlerager now to kill a mage.
And so, with allspec skills now gone, I delete. Because as a battlerager I killed
a mage who has one of the few items that shifts the veil all by itself.
And after specifically NOT killing a non-mage mob who also has something, and just
offhanding it. And as my other role chapter told, somehow it's ok for bearinka to
step in and order people to leave a cabal and not fight an enemy, and be totally wrong
about cabal policies. But would anyone ever see any other imm step in and order an
enemy out and not to fight an enemy there? Preposterous.
