Description

A five and a half foot tall man with shoulder length hair, a short closely cropped beard, and the overall build of a swimmer or rapier duelist. His hair on approximately three quarters of his head is the dark blackish green of thick pond scum, and blackish green burns in irregular shapes and sizes can be seen wherever his bare skin is visible. In darkness or poor lightning, the greenish black is faintly glowing, although it seems to shed no light upon anything else. Small, refined features inhabit a face lined with weather and wrinkles, and his brow is often furrowed by either sorrow or some darker, more intense emotion. You also notice:

"You see, I have been blessed with foresight and wisdom beyond any
mortal, and it is my duty to save Thera from itself.  And for that
very reason, you must come to my bedroom tonight" cooed Ilix to
the elven maiden at the Inn.  Right as he finished his sentence, however,
he sensed danger and so he quickly went to grab a smoke bomb for
a quick getaway.  Alas, he was not blessed with nearly-infinite agility, and
he was punished for this with a resounding *SLAP* across his face.

Right then a gnome ran into the Inn hurriedly and, out of breath, he
sputtered "Come quick Ilix, the balance is upset".  Ilix joined with the
Meter and as he did so, he felt a warmness throughout his being, and his
thoughts wandered to his task at hand.  Little did they know the sacrifices
that Ilix made for Thera.  Puny mortals, with their average wisdom and average
perception!  As he went to the Fortress he knew that he would be assaulted by
both sides, instead of being carried upon both Good and Evil's shoulders as the
champion of Thera.  What little they knew!  He consoled himself with thoughts
of elven maidens and then, by force of will, pushed all thoughts besides
these to the side, and turned his thoughts inward, and became a cold, calculated
killer, at least for the moment.  He gripped his blades and gritted his teeth as
he prepared to right the Balance.

Ilix has entered the Rift and is now becoming more confident in his abilities.
As he trains and becomes more powerful, he becomes more preoccupied with
himself.  He believes, as the Djinn has imbued in him, that he is the only
chance for Thera's safety and he must do it by serving the Rift.  As
his power grows, he will increasingly demand to be known as the Chosen One
as tribute to his power and supreme purpose.
In the end, his ego will conflict with his duties . . until a
resolution is reached.

The Chosen One

The man had been climbing the Unscalable Crag for two weeks now.  He had
braved the Wind of Ten Days a few days ago, on the middle third of the Crag,
after finding a tiny nook in which he could be partially sheltered from the
magical gale-force winds that tore at his flesh and left it raw
for ten days straight.  Before that, he had narrowly escaped
death at the hands of the Claw Tribe, a cat-like species that prowled
the lower third of the mountain known for their ferocity and the ability
to devour bones whole.  He gritted his teeth as the summit came into view, and
with it the great Stone Roc.

The man, who has no name, for only his journey is significant, had set
out from his village to the Unscalable Crag in search of a magical breadbox
that was rumored to hold a powerful djinn.  He had come to
barter with the Djinn, who was said to be guarded by a ancient mythical
creature.  No man had ever reached the top of the Crag, or even survived the
deadly Wind of Ten Days for more than a few hours, but this man's mission
was much different from the swashbucklers and treasure hunters that had
preceeded him.  He came for a much more valuable treasure - the gift of Life.

He waited for what seemed like days, huddled against the stone
crag, waiting motionless for the Roc to leave.  Finally, the
Stone Roc flew away in search of food, and he scrambled up the last
hundred yards to reach the nest.  He found the legendary breadbox nestled
in some of the branches.  He grabbed it and hurridly opened it, all
the while scanning the skies for the return of the Stone Roc.  A
hazy blue gas snaked its way out of the box and formed
the figure of a blue spirit.  The spirit gazed upon the man with
disdain as the spirit wiped away breadcrumbs from its mouth.  "Mortal, why
have you disturbed me?"  the djinn boomed.  "I come seeking
barter" spoke the man.  Shaking, the man reached into his sack and pulled
out a tiny bejeweled music box, which he opened to reveal a
beautiful love song.  "This is my offer to you, powerful Djinn, if
you grant me and my wife a child, as we are unable to concieve".
"If you can Djinn, offer us a child, blessed with great wisdom and
perception, so that he may be a champion of this land."  The Djinn nodded, and
with a wave of his ethereal hand, he granted the gift of life to the man's
wife, and with another wave he dissapated into the music box, which clattered
to the ground noisly right as the Stone Roc returned, and rended the man in two with
a brief talon strike.

And so Ilix was concieved, son of djinn.  The djinn had a sense of humor
often lost in such long-lived creatures, and as the man had requested, he
granted the child great perception and wisdom, but so much so that
the child was aware of his own beginnings.  He knew that he was the Chosen
One, destined to be the champion of Thera, and so this truth permeated his
personality, until those that gazed upon him might wonder how someone of such
wisdom had become so vain.  Ilix knew it was his destiny to protect Thera, and
so the Chosen One began his journey into the Rift.
