Description
You suddenly notice a short little figure staring up at you, smiling.
He is covered in poorly kept armor, as if he fancies himself a tiny
soldier or mercenary of some sort, all ill-fitting and some perhaps
not originally his. A mess of light brown hair hangs in his yes and
from under his helm, and a few shiny trinkets glimmer hopefully
against his dusty and worn cloaks. He clutches a sharp, dirty
knife in one hand, and a host of other knives are visible upon
his rounded, wide hips. An uneven beard of light brown juts from his
chin, no mustache upon his lip, the crop of curly hair descends from
face like a matte of unkept fur.
Role
A scoundrel and a rogue

Ipdigbli Bibliggle was a not a good gnome. A terrible student, a liar,
a cheater, a bully, a thief, you name it. Constantly in trouble, he
was ultimately expelled from Hillcrest grade school, and on track for
detention labor in the copper mines if he hadn't successfully snuck
out of Hillcrest and run away.
Why was he such a bad gnome? For many difficult children, the source can
often be attributed to the home. But Ipdigbli's parents were well-
regarded, and his siblings all excellent students. His father was, in
fact, a long-time sergeant in the Hillcrest guard. His mother was a
skilled and admired invoker, loved by many for her help teaching in
the magic tower.
In truth, Ipdigbli's erratic behavior could be attributed simply to his
inability to fit in with his magically gifted peers in Hillcrest. All his
siblings followed in their mother's footsteps in the study of invocation.
Even his baby sister was uttering spell incantations as some of her first
words! But when Ipdigbli tried to utter the same incantations...
nothing ever happened. It was clear that Ipdigbli was more likely to take
after his father, with no propensity for magic, but, with discipline
and dedication, perhaps an admirable career in the Hillcrest Guard.
An idea that Ipdigbli loathed.
Nothing sounded worse to the young gnome than a boring life of getting
up early, training, watching, standing, and following orders. And so
he rebelled against his strict father's attempts to instill a soldier's
values and training in him, and instead, tried to keep up with his
mage friends, using trickery and cheating for as long as he could. And
when he would fail, he'd accuse others of sabatoging him. He'd insult
or distract. And before he realized it, Ipdigbli found himself as a
angry, jealous, insecure delinquent.
When he was finally expelled, when was subsequently in and out of
trouble for various schemes and robberies, bitterness filled his
heart. He hated all the gnomes who made his life miserable, all the
folks who thought they were so much better than him. He hated his dad,
he hated the village guards, and he hated magic, though he longed
to be good at it.
He left Hillcrest aimless, but hungry. For what... he couldn't say.
Refuge

It did not take Ipdigbli long to get into more trouble. No plan, no
friends, he resorted to swindling and thievery to make his way. But
he liked to pretend the stunts he'd pull, sleight of hand, mostly, were
his own form of magic. When they worked, they certainly seemed magical
to his victims!
But it didn't matter, he still was little more than an annoyance. Young
as he was, a wise young gnome would have known that strength takes time.
But Ipdigbli was ever impatient, ever measuring, and each failure only
filled him with more and more enmity.
And it took its toll. Quickly gaining a reputation as a menace,
and a liar, for that matter, few wanted to journey with him, and
much to his dismay, he learned that he could not even buy food or
drink in most places! A known criminal, he refused to turn himself in
to the smug gnome magistrate, Tivlin, who constantly threw his arrogant
patience and calmness in Ipdigbli's face. He would rather sleep alone
in the woods than give that pompous Tivlin the satisfaction of
catching him! And so he did. And he did not do well.
The cold, open air was a far cry from a cozy inn room with a fireplace.
Ipdigbli started to question his choices. But what choice did he have?
He was not going to toil for a living in some field or mine or who knows
what! But was this worth it? It was. Because he was free. Cold, tired,
and hungry, but not at his parent's mercy or a teacher's or anyone else's.
But a city gnome alone, hiding in the woods? He needed help.
He needed refuge.
Wandering into Purpose
Added Tue Dec 9 09:45:07 2025 at level 43:
Freedom sure is painful! Always cold and dirty, and now committed to
forsaking the gold and copper his suppliers so favored, life was not
always so comfortable as it once was. But Ipdigbli wouldn't have it
any other way. For he was free from impositions of them, of the folks,
communities, and cities who demanded he act as he "should."
The ways of the Outlanders were more and more becoming truly his own, even
if life did not always shape around him the way he wanted.
What did he want? That depended on the moment, and in this regard, the ways
of the Outlanders suited him well. Never one to look too far ahead, Ipdigbli
simply wanted to do as he wished. Being part of a radical movement to
reclaim the purity of Thar-Eris? His heart may not have been outpouring
dedication for such an initiative at the start, but with each transgression
by the enemies of the Outlanders, even also those committed by the oblivious,
self-righteous "innocents" of the civilized world, Ipdigbli found himself
becoming more and more entrenched in the Outlander dogma. For some gnomes,
ambition or hope motivates them. For other, perhaps less wise, gnomes, spite
is an even more powerful motivation.
But what Ipdigbli had in the Outlanders that he never had before, was family.
Friends. He found his allies amused, rather than annoyed, with his boasts,
his tangents, even his lies. He found himself aided and valued. Not by all,
mind you. There was no love for the Nightreaver, who called him a "chew toy."
Ipdigbli wasn't about to forget that. But otherwise the community of the
Outlanders dissolved much of the enmity in him, and gave him a much needed
sense of direction.
Even if, by his nature, he still didn't always walk in the direction he
should.
But, now a grown gnome, now caught up in a war that often hurt him, quite
literally, he also saw in the chaos endless opportunities for fun.
He was finally learning how to be himself, and also, to extent, how to
play well with others. To be free, and with that, free to bind himself
to others. Mostly, anyway. But the bitterness that had consumed him as a
young misbehaving outcast was more and more being replaced by a
satisfaction of a need for mischief and wanderlust.
All in the name of dismantling the cities and institutions that tried for
so long to contain him, of course. Which was, no lie, pretty fun.
