Description

From within the inky shadow cast upon his face by a wide-brimmed, leather safari hat, two points of crimson light glare hatefully at the world. Though he is marked as a mage by the imposing presence of the ensorceled staff in his hand, his garb suggests a lifestyle that is familiar with physical brutality. Where one might expect to see a hooded cloak, the drow wears a long, leather overcoat with a high collar. Upon his chest you see a thin layer of overlapping steel which bears only a few nicks and dings. There is no doubt a plethora of strange gadgetry hidden within the blackness of his clothes, but the only other object you can see is a peculiar set of manacles that are made, surprisingly, of glass.

Role

Introduction: A Plea for Justice

Added Thu Dec 4 14:13:46 2008 at level 11:
You have waded into the depths of Jahfenar's life to discover
what motivates him, and why. I wish I could tell you that
such a merciless creature is really just misunderstood, or
that he is the victim of a cruel society and a tortured past.
I wish I could tell you that, at one time, a glimmer of hope
shone forth from his black heart, or that he truly knew what
it meant to love someone.

But, I can't tell you any of that, because I am the part of
Jahfenar that never lies. I am the part of him that never was;
his conscience, his morality, his "good nature." All I can do
is recount the horror of his life and hope that justice is
served in this life or the next.

The Art of Destruction

Added Sat Dec 6 22:48:33 2008 at level 21:
As I unfold the tragedy of this life, let us raise our bloody
curtain upon the first foul act. It is no surprise that the
tale of this dark life begins in complete and utter darkness...

-------------------------------------------------------------

In the infinite stygian murk of the underdark, every second
heralds an eternity of terror for trespassers to this forsaken
world. This was not lost on the man and his child as they paused
to eat the last of the musky fungus which had fueled their flight
from the slave camp so far. The feeling was primal - elemental.
In this place they knew their role was that of the prey, and that
the odds were stacked heavily against their survival. But, they
felt for the first time since they had been captured, a glimmer
of hope was sparkling in the shadows, guiding them on a winding
path to the surface...to their lives as they once were.

Does a person who owns a cat scold it when it chooses to paw, gnaw
and play with the mouse it has captured? Perhaps we look upon the
situation with a sort of amusement, or with varying degrees of
of pity. But, we let it play out - we let the cat play. Why, then,
should we see anything wrong with the next scene in this act...?

Days after the aforementioned "fungus lunch," our hopeful escapees
were still wandering. The wounds were mounting, and the man had a
suspicion that at least one, but probably more, cave-dwelling beasts
were on their trail. The scent of their sweat and blood was like a
beacon down in the dark. Jahfenar knew the reality of their situation.
He had been watching them from nearly the beginning, concealed from
view by his newest illusory magic: invisibility. He knew that, at
some point in the near future, their supplies would dwindle, and
the edible funguses would diminish as they continued into the
more remote territories. They would press on for a day or two, going
at a rapid, reckless pace (the mind's way of denying doom), but
after that they would wind down like a pair of old clocks. After
that...after they had slowed, the crawlers and cavefishers would
be upon them.

The truth of the matter is that Jahfenar set up their escape,
unbeknownst to anyone. He made sure that they had an opportunity
to pick their shackles. He made certain that the guards were
distracted. He even claimed he saw them head in another direction.
Why? A couple reasons; first, he wanted to hone his tracking
abilities. Secondly, and far more nefarious, he wanted to see hope
destroyed. For as long as he could remember, Jahfenar liked to
see stability upheaved. Institutions crumbled. To simply take a
hammer to something held no interest...that was the mindless form
of destruction that was referred to when people said "to destroy
is easier than to create." He had found that a master of destruction
was truly a creator of despair - a craftsman in his own right.

"They will start by devouring your eyes. They do that because, to
their eyes, yours shine brightly...it attracts them." This is how
he revealed his presence to them, once they had "wound down." They
held each other, gasping. The man speaking hoarsely, demanding to
know who was there - as if it mattered.

"Time is short. You are both going to die very soon. I won't lie;
it is going to be terrible. There won't be anything left
