Description

This centaur's appearance is true to Ancient legend. From the waste up, he is a bulky, muscular looking man. From the waste down he is an equestrian beast. He has eyes that flash like lightning, both bright and menacing. They are piercing eyes and though they are without malevolence they possess a certain wildness that, when taken on balance with his beastly bottom, must easily intimidate all but the most stalwart. Long, ruddy-brown hair flows like a mane from beneath his helmet and frames an angular face. A strong jaw, high cheek bones and proud nose make for an imposing but still pleasing countenance. What skin peeks from beneath armor 4 The bottom, equestrian part of Japhire shares a similar color with his human skin. The hair upon his horse-like body has more red, but is still brown and sleeks its way uniformly along his form. The ferocity of thundering hooves moved by legs like small trees rumbles the earth when he moves. Standing tall and mighty, this centaur has a stoic air that makes him seem firmly rooted in his surroundings.

Role

Leaving Al'Arianat I

Added Fri May 18 08:48:26 2018 at level 16:
It was a cool, summer evening - quiet and still - the first time I died.
There was no glory or purpose in that first death. Not like there would be in
the many to come. Instead there was just the slow march toward starvation's
final destination. It had been long since the trees of my homeland bore
fruit, long since game bounded over its fields and longer still since I'd
seen another of my kind. The Ancient magic that protected my birthplace
throughout the passings of Ages had, at last, run its duration. And so had I.

In my early years, before the elders disappeared, I was told the tale of
Arianat Greenhoof, the warrior brother of Strienat. In the times of the
Ancients he trod over tall mountains and through mighty rivers hunting the
bounty of Thar-Eris. When the Great War fell upon the lands and Thar-Eris
began to weaken, Arianat was among Her great champions. The forces that rose
against the Ancient, arboreal world knew in him a powerful foe.

As other Ancients went to slumber, wisely preserving themselves for future
battles, Arianat fought on long past hope's remembrance. He lead the last
great centaur army, beasts with blood-red eyes and steaming nostrils, in its
final charge. Arianat watched as centaur after centaur was struck down, his
eyes hot with angry tears, his menacing axe finding foe after foe. When all
his brethren had fallen and Arianat saw the truth of his defeat, he stretched
a hand toward the heavens and called upon the remainder of his magic.

Lightning split the sky and caused earth to rend. Rain fell in a torrent and
the wind roared like a great dragon. The great Storm born of Arianat's magic
came with a heavy price. Arianat collapsed. Yet there among the howling winds
and pouring rain, with his face barely above the mud, Arianat gave all he was
to call upon more.

The storm grew in intensity, its unbridled power stealing the life from his
remaining foes - and from Arianat himself. The battlefield was rent asunder.
As Arianat lay dying, he used what remained of his power. The storm calmed. A
sweeping wave of magic emanated from the dying Ancient, created a kind of
invisible dome, and preserved within it a small piece of Thar-Eris.

Leaving Al'Arianat II

Added Fri May 18 08:52:40 2018 at level 16:
The centaurs who remained within called the place Al'Arianat in honor of the
sacrifice that created it. It was not unlike the Refuge of the Outlanders,
save that its borders were rendered both hidden and impassable by Arianat's
magic. Age passed into age, and the few remaining centaurs within Al'Arianat
grew tame.

Arianat, above all things, valued Freedom. He had used his magic to create a
safe haven with impassable borders, but those borders also created a prison.
So Arianat created a door of sorts. If any endeavored to leave the safety of
Al'Arianat, they could do so upon the summer solstice. And so it was for
century upon century.

As time put distance between Arianat's sacrifice and the present, the magic
of the dome weakened. The protections eroded, and Al'Arianat began to join
its creator in death. These were my times.

As I lay dying of starvation in the barren wasteland of Al'Arianat, I knew I
had err'd. My centaur kin had all left on the last solstice, yet I remained,
hoping for some miracle to restore my home. Now I would pay the cost.

I said I died upon a summer evening, and by some stroke of luck that was the
evening preceding summer's solstice. When my mortal body at last gave out, I
was restored in the way of all Theran adventurers - as a ghost in a holy
place. But to my surprise, the magic blocking the way to Al'arianat had
relented for the solstice and my spirit was allowed to escape. I awoke by the
pit in the Holy Grove.

I should have found joy in my salvation, but felt only the bitterness of
loss. Al'Arianat was dying, true, but it was still my homeland. Because I had
not walked out, rather died and had my consciousness transported into an
incorporeal shell in the Holy Grove, I could never retrace my steps and find
my way home.

I found myself then a stranger in a strange land. I was naked both in body
and soul, for I had neither possessions or kin. Though not the day of my
birth, this was in most ways the day my story began. And what a story I would
try to make it.

The Horror of Awakening

Added Fri May 18 08:54:38 2018 at level 16:
Within a day of my arrival in the Holy Grove I knew the awful truth. Wretched
civilization had creeped its awful tendrils into everything pure and right. I
had never known of a thing called a "city" before that day. I knew not stones
could be raped and abused into blocks that could then be stacked so high as
to block the sun to the creatures below. I didn't know that green things
could be so completely obliterated as to allow for mile after mile of
man-made abominations. I didn't think a creature could be so cruel as to
murder entire forest's of trees just to build unnecessarily large buildings.

These cities were not alone in their aberration. Cities were connected by
long strips of desecrated ground called "roads". And along these roads were
an unending litany of villages, farms, fortresses and the transgressive
creations of men.

The observance of all that had been lost since my people's hooves last trod
the lands evoked the ancestral rage of my centaur antecedence. Though naked,
alone and frail by comparison to the atrocities before me, I resolved to
wholly give whatever I was to the restoration of Thar-Eris.

Though angered, I also found myself overtaken by sorrow for a more insidious
danger. The loss of self-reliance. Man in his building had insulated himself
from the truth of the world. No longer did he need to hunt or gather to eat
himself into obesity. He needn't know which face of a mountain to make a
camp, or where to place his bed to remain safe from beast and element as he
slept. For though he would never know the danger of the wilds, he would also
never know the freedom self-reliance brings. He interned himself in the
illusion of safety.

I stand in opposition to all that which harms Thar-Eris and inhibits man's
reliance upon himself. Those I would call brother and ally are within the
Refuge, and those without are a blight upon the land I shall not suffer. My
enemies are not just those who seek the destruction of the natural world, but
any who further civilization's reach and steal from men their self-reliance
by living in villages, fortresses, camps or any unnatural dwelling. They
shall know the awful wrath of the Ancient's centaur.

Begin with the End in Mind

Added Fri May 25 18:52:39 2018 at level 48:
For all my righteous ambition, I was still an untrained and inexperienced
young mortal. One of many. The world I entered was dangerous, fraught with
hundreds of would-be murderers. I would need to learn to survive, thus I
sought the way of warriors and the monks of Macalla.

I was fortunate to find tutelage with Thay Bladesinger, Warrior Guildmaster
of Evermoon Glenn. The fortune I found was in the wisdom of his many years,
not merely his skill in the craft of battle. He gave me a pearl of erudition
so great it has guided nearly all of my decisions.

"Begin with the end in mind," the Bladesinger would say. And when it came to
my martial training, that was exactly what I did. Thay would explain well my
genetic deficiencies. Not deft. Not hearty. Not strong for my size. In fact,
as he would explain, I had but one trait to use to my combative advantage.
Wisdom.

I knew then that I must one day seek the monks of Macalla to teach me the
fabled Space between Hearbeats technique. In nature, an animal must play to
its strengths and instincts. The gazelle uses its speed, it does not try to
bite as the alligator does. Nor does the alligator rely upon his speed to
chase down his prey. So too must Japhire rely upon his greatest asset.

Though it does me some honor to wield the axe as Arianat did long ago, the
truth in this selection was made that I might break the weapons which could
not be disarmed. The use of the lance, or polearm to most, was chosen that I
might be able to cutoff means of escape from my weaponless foe. Or, should my
foe choose to wield his weapons as he dances with me in battle, he shall
surely pay the price demanded by the Space Between Heartbeats.

I write this not merely to explain my choices as a warrior, but to introduce
this idea of beginning with the end in mind. I wonder if the Ancients, who
were there at time's dawn knew something of what would become of Thar-Eris. I
wonder if they knew what I would discover having left my home of Al'Arianat.
I wonder if the answer to this question would aid me in bringing the Rise.

I will ask this question of Ergush, Lord of the Storms. For I am as the
Storm. With my warrior training I am a Storm of destruction, bringing fire
and flood that the foes of Thar-Eris find ruination. But with my wisdom I am
a Storm of renewal, with teaching rains that restore balance to Her. I have
reached my 48th title, the beginning of my Storm is at hand - let Ergush give
council as to what the end of that Storm holds.

Views on the Fortress

Added Sat May 26 15:56:02 2018 at level 48:
Dear Fortress of Light,

I am called Japhire of Al'Arianat and I write to you with a pleading heart.
Many of you will know me as an Outlander of Thar-Eris. I am born of centaur
blood and have recently traveled to these lands to discover them fraught with
many abominations made by man's hand. I did not know that stone could be so
raped and abused as to form blocks that could be stacked so high as to block
the very sun. Nor did I know man could be so cruel as to destroy green things
so wantonly they create mile upon mile of gray and lifeless space.

I have discovered also that those who walk in the Sun (now more often
referred to as the Light) have strayed from the ways of the Ancients and have
defiled a once snowy and pristine mountain with a wretched "fortress."

Japhire knows that none of those residing within the Fortress stacked the
blocks that made it, nor did the new-gods who watch over it create it with
their immortal hands. I also recognize that there has not been a Harbinger or
Sunwarden through much of your lives to teach you of the ways of Thar-Eris,
and the transgressive nature of your defilement. I cannot fault you for
providing for yourselves in any other manner than that which you were taught.

Thus I offer to teach you. Let Japhire of Al'Arianat show you how to find
food and water within the embrace of the wild. Let him show you how to make a
safe camp and to tread without trace across the face of your Mother. Let him
show you a life without walls around body or soul.

I said I come to you with a pleading heart. So I beseech you, fighters for
the Sun, do not embrace your walls, for they must be reclaimed by the snows
and icy winds. I do not ask you to stop your task, nor for you to avoid the
fortress when you must protect your Orb or place the item of your foe.
However, those of you who sit inside that awful monstrosity, and those of you
who do not embrace the ways of Thar-Eris, will know the ferocity of a centaur
on the warpath.

The Last of Al'Arianat (Part I)

Added Sat Jun 2 13:52:17 2018 at level 51:
Perhaps it would have been better to never find Al'Arianat again. I could
have lived my days seeing it only with my mind's eye. For there it would be
forever green, rich and pure. The grasslands would always roll gently into
the waiting trees. The happy bees would buzz from flower to vibrant flower
and the doe would lay down with her fawn to sleep under the starry night sky.
Instead I found the terrible truth. A reality where all that remained of
Al'Arianat was a barren wasteland and the tears that glistened on my cheeks.

I found my way back to Al'Arianat without particular effort. As an Outlander
does, I scoured the face of Thar-Eris searching for what ancient things
remained in this time. This journey brought me to the Wastes of Nonveil and
to the realization that Al'Arianat had been swallowed up by those awful
sands.

We all must march Time's inexorable march, and whether by blood or age I knew
the passing of years would bring my grave. I imagined myself leaving my
weapons and armor in the hollows of the Refuge and using the last of my days
to find Al'Arianat. Then, when I found again my birthplace, retire to my
final slumber. As Thay Bladesinger always said, "Begin with the end in mind."
Now I knew I would need to find another ending to the tale of Japhire. There
would be no going home.

The story of Al'Arianat is in microcosm the story of the world. Everything is
perfect at the start. Not utopian perfection wherein all is without
sufferance, rather the Mother gives us the perfection of harmonious
ecosystem, where individual things may struggle and suffer but the world
itself is triumphant. Every creature within the ecosystem does as it should
by instinct. Every creature except one. Mortals are the only creature that
can deny their instinct and in their attempt for personal utopia destroy the
harmony created by the Mother.

Many are the stories of the arboreal world destroyed in the name of progress.
Few are the stories of the ancient world reclaiming its lost places. At times
I cannot reconcile whether the Mother is the ultimate strength, or if She is
frail and fragile. I think, perhaps, She is both. I think of Her as having
endurance, but not speed. That over the passing of ages She will flourish,
but in short moments she is easily wounded with wounds that take lifetimes to
heal. It is man's thoughtless touch that risks all, for wounds are made even
when wounds are not intended. But how to make men think?

The Last of Al'Arianat (Part II)

Added Sat Jun 2 14:17:48 2018 at level 51:
A reaver would say blood and fire. That eradicating all who do not embrace
the rise of Thar-Eris is the only solution. Yet, I do not see how the
Outlanders, who are so few, can eradicate the remainder of all mortals. The
wardens would say we must teach, and that through love and understanding all
the world can learn to walk lightly upon Her. Yet the wolf-mother cannot
teach her pups without nipping them, nor can she save them from the bear
without ferocity and blood.

With Al'Arianat gone, I have but one home, and that is the Refuge. My only
reason to live is to bring the Rise of Thar-Eris. I can never return to the
bubble of Arianat's magic and pretend all the world is as preserved. I must
save this world, or die in the effort. Thus, the question of how best to make
men think has never been more important.

I believe the wolf is right. Teeth protect, and gentle teeth teach. The wolf
does not try to teach its pups when the bear comes and soo must it be with
the sentinel. The first responsibility is to destroy that which outrightly
harms Her, the second to teach those who can be taught, if only a little at a
time. Let protection be done with speed, and teaching be done with endurance.

I have borne my teeth against the foes of Thar-Eris, and with my axe interned
them into a bloody grave. And, I have nipped at those who are careless, like
the Fortress, with word and challenge and steel. I do not treat those I teach
like those I fight, though to outward eyes it may appear so. I do not nip at
an assassin of the Fortress when there is a conjurer of the Spire to bite.
There is no mercy, no staying of my axe, for those who defile Her -- but for
the remainder -- they need take but a single step toward living in harmony
with nature, and I will become teacher and friend. Al'Arianat has met its
end, but its last centaur has found a new beginning.
