Description
Small bits of seaweed hang loosely about the leather jerkin and
tight-fitting pants on the figure before you. Salt heavily crusts
his clothing leaving it faded from dark blue to white with no
apparent pattern. Thin scars mar his arms and add to the already
weatherworn look of his deeply tanned skin. Well developed muscles
show along his thick neck and limbs and the heavy calluses on his
hands show their likely origin. Dark brown eyes look about with a
slight squint that does not go away, diminishing from what would
otherwise be a handsome face. A faint scent of the ocean wafts
behind this tall man.
Role
Sailing Day

The day I had been dreading for six months had finally arrived. I turned
thirteen today which to my normally affluent life would be a reason for
great celebration and parties. I likely would have even stolen glasses of
wine while my parents were busy working the crowd of their rich friends.
Instead I was boarding a ship that my father had ordered fitted with the
most luxurious amenities. There was shuffleboard on one side and a fine
buffet on the other. I was merely letting myself be distracted by the
niceties as I boarded the boat of my dread. My palms burst into sweat as
soon as I began walking down the railed walkway onto the ship. My stomach
began to churn and rumble as my foot touched the deck. The perfect weather
darkened to my vision and it was all I could do to not lose the bile in my
stomach. I had prepared as best I could and came with an empty stomach.
I tried to smile to my father whom gave me a fake one back under eyes
filled with contempt. This weakness of mine had caused him no small
amount of embarassment in his line of work. He had provided us a nice
mansion off of his fleet of merchant vessels. If only his son wasn't
deathly afraid of any water he can't see the bottom of.
I found my way to a chair and sat down pretending to be at ease. The
muscles in my hands and arms would reveal the truth to any whom looked
close enough, but none did. These were all fools and sycophants whom my
father loved. They would pretend I was fine and this would clear my name
and more importantly to my father, his. If I didn't lose my lunch first.
Unexpected Guests

I had been on board roughly an hour as we sailed through the Western
Aryth ocean without any truly dire consequences. I might have pain in my
hands for the next week, but I was holding out better than I had expected.
If it were not for those damnable waves that we kept crashing through it
might have even been pleasant. Instead, I jerked with each loud splash as
we landed heavily. I heard a yell that made me think I had finally broke
down and let me mind free my internal screaming. As I gazed through the
dark haze covering my vision I spotted what had caused the roar. A black
ship as dark as night glided through the sea at such speed that it would
be striking us in minutes. My father yelled to rouse the crew and defend
us, but it was more than I could take to watch it at this point. I crawled
beneath my chair so neatly nailed to the deck and closed my eyes and
screamed until I passed out.
I woke hours later as the only one of those from our ship still alive
and not in manacles. The rest who still lived were the youngest of our
guests with able bodies. One fellow that I had enjoyed partying with had
seen they lacked the amount of manacles and instead of killing me told
them I deathly afraid of water and not threatening. As I didn't have my
full growth they decided to let me live. He then told the tale quickly of
my father trying to buy his way free and the pirate instead saying he would
take what he wanted from his corpse before killing my parents and looting
their still warm bodies. I heard mention of heading to a crystal island,
but my heart ached with pain that mixed with my churning stomach and
limbs filled with dread to let me experience nothingness as I passed
out again.
Cormorant
Added Thu Oct 1 09:53:53 2020 at level 8:
I woke up to a clear night filled with bright stars. A cold wind blew
across the top of the ship but I was not freezing as all of the prisoners
had huddled for warmth and some kind soul had included me. My stomach was
surprisingly calm as the imminent dread had overpowered it. I stifled a
gasp as a spectral bird landed on the railing in front of me. Despite the
ghostly appearance, its color was clearly a mix of black on top with white
underneath on short wings. It looks quite pleased with itself as it stared
at me. The bird suddenly burst into the sky and started diving into the
water before flying back to me and repeating the cycle. I was surprised to
find that no crew member seemed to notice the scene. While it is easy to
admit I was a spoiled brat at a later time, even then in that moment I was
not an idiot and knew the only way to survive would be to risk it all.
This should have caused a massive amount of panic, but it didn't. A calm
acceptance of my sure doom had settled into me as I took a dive into the
ocean. I should have died with the terrible angle I took but my flailing
arms straightened me by pure chance. A white light dove beside me and flew
through me as I found a sudden burst of energy to surface. I had thought
perhaps I stood a chance before my head bashed against some jagged rocks
that I tried in vain to cling to. Blood ran in the water from deep scrapes
along my limbs but that spectral cormorant guided me to swim under the waves
and away from the rocks. It felt like hours but I found myself laying on a
beach just short of some trees. Every muscle I had burned and I could no
more than just reach the edge of the forest before sleep drug me into its
warm embrace. The last feeling that flowed through me was a strong love for
that cormorant and all of the avians of Thera for saving my worthless life.
Change

I woke the next morning and swore off my old life. It was dead with my
parents. I began trying to swim again but the fluidity of the previous
night was gone. It took me hours to realize gaining that expertise would
not happen quickly. I began to explore my new domain while scavenging
berries and nuts to fuel my starved body. I found a stream to drink from
and many pathways through this forest. The water became my safety as
when predators came I would quickly retreat to the sea and put distance
between us with my floudering. After a few weeks I was at ease in the
water and fluidly moving between it and the woods.
It was these next few formative months where I had only myself for company
that I began to think over what had happened. Grief washed over me in
sudden unpredictable waves that I was only able to delay if my life
depended on it. The end result left me a useless sobbing wreck. Ideals
rose up from this dark place to become the pillar of who I wanted to
be. I knew I did not want all of the gold I could easily have by going
and claiming my family's estate. It had brought my family an easy life
that had left us all soft. I had learned just how pathetic I really had
been over the past months as layers of fat had melted off of me to be
replaced with lean muscle. I decided that I wanted to have enough strength
and quickness to fight for what I believed in instead of trying to bargain
for it like my father had failed to do.
The longer I spent with in the wilds watching the cycle of life play out
the easier it became to see of patterns that I should try to avoid. I
would live a balanced life and hunt when necessary or forage when
necessary without taking more than I needed as the animals around me did.
I would not succumb to the pitfalls of the prey whom was ambushed by the
same stream it always drank from. I would let the wild spirits within and
all around me guide my steps so that I did not become too predictable in
myself. I must embrace the chaotic ways of life so that I could never be
such easy prey.
Guild

One day I was observing a pack of wolves hunting from a tree above when
I was surprised by a fellow waving at me as he expertly walked through
the forest. I was shocked to action and quickly followed and spoke with
the first person since my escape. He quickly explained he was a ranger
whom was heading to the deep snows in the mountains east of here. I
asked him where I could learn to move as he did and he pointed me to a
rangers guild just south of here in Seantryn. I had not realized how
near I was to my old home and the hesitation on my face was clear. He
instead pointed me north to a rangers guild near Arkham.
I took my newly gained strength in the ocean and swam to Arkham and
followed his directions into the forest to the guild. As I told the
guildmaster Henarim of myself they quickly had me placed as a mariner. It
was the next expertise they could teach that took careful choice. There were
many interesting techniques they could teach me and in the end it was the
bow that drew me to be a hunter. The power and precision looked strong if
practiced with dedication. After my choices were made the guildmaster sat
me down and told me of how the life I was trying to live reminded him of
those of the Refuge to the north. He said the astral bird only convinced him
that I should learn more of Ergush whom guided the Outlanders and protected
the many spirits in the wilds. These ideas took immediate root as if I was
a drawn arrow and they my target.
