Description

Standing slightly shorter and slimmer than most others, this young man stands here doing his best to blend in with his surroundings. His dark brown hair has grown long, and is pulled into a tail behind his neck. The ivory skin of his face contrasts starkly with the royal blue of his eyes, which seem to never stop moving as they scan the surroundings. His slender limbs are taught, betraying a trained litheness and strength that may otherwise go unnoticed. A well-practiced attempt at a casual smiles is fixed upon his lips, unchanging regardless of circumstance.

Role

The Hero

Added Fri Dec 21 01:00:19 2012 at level 1:
It had been a quiet journey, the young prince thought to himself. And
thankfully so. There was a price on his head, he knew. The price of
gambling in a fixed match. He should have known better, but who could
resist those odds?

No one had recognized him during his trip. He wasn't well known, of
course. A sixth son to a minor Lord. But still, there was that risk. And
now, thankfully, he was almost home. To hide behind his palace walls,
where he might be safe once again. Just around this bend and over the
next rise, he would be home at last.

But a sudden shriek broke the silence. A woman was crying. Or was it a
child? In either case, the young noble raced forward, heroic thoughts
racing in his head.

Odd. A young boy. Ten or maybe eleven years old lay in the middle of the
road. He was yelling, but no tears stained his face. Only a curious
expression, as his eyes suddenly grew wide.

The young prince never even felt the knife, as it slipped quickly between
his ribs. A man cloaked in black had appeared from nowhere, killing the
would-be hero before he even knew he was in danger.

Kaenis watched him die, as he gathered himself from the road. Looking to
the assassin for approval, Kaenis found only emptiness in his father's
eyes.

Doubts

Added Fri Dec 21 01:01:10 2012 at level 1:
His father called him an apprentice, though Kaenis was treated like any
other tool to be used by the master assassin.

He wanted his father's approval. His love and his acceptance. But as the
years passed, Kaenis learned that there was none to be had. His father
was a machine. Mindless, soulless. He was paid, he acted. Nothing more.

On some level, Kaenis always knew what his father did was wrong. But he
justified it to himself. The men were bad. Criminals, some. Liars and
cheats, others.

The last one, though. He seemed a good man. He ran forward, trying to
help, after all. That was how they got him.

It just didn't seem right.

And that was the beginning of Kaenis' doubts.

The Maiden

Added Fri Dec 21 01:02:31 2012 at level 1:
Only a few years Kaenis' elder, the girl was utterly beautiful. Curly
golden locks, brilliant emerald eyes. Tall and curvy. She was the picture
of perfection.

But there was a price on her head.

Kaenis knew the reasons. She was a pauper, albeit a beautiful one. Some
noble's son was smitten, but the family could not have him marrying this
commoner.

Kaenis knew, but it didn't feel right from the start.

He was to distract her at the stream, as his father approached from
behind. It was a scheme that had used a dozen times before. But this one
was different.

As he spoke to her, Kaenis became enraptured. She was a sweet girl, quick
to laugh. And so very trusting. Too trusting. A shadow flickered in the
corner of his eye, and Kaenis knew what was coming.

He wanted to stop it. To yell a warning. But it was too late. Blood was
already pouring from the girl's mouth. This beautiful young girl. This
innocent girl. Dead.

Never had Kaenis been trusted with the killing blow, but he had been
trained in the means to do so. He even carried a small knife, in case
things should ever go bad.

Today, they did.

He could feel his father's heartbeat, as the dagger plunged through his
ribs. He could feel the beating stop, as the light faded from his
father's eyes. But he felt no remorse. The deed was done and Kaenis would
not grieve him.

Purpose

Added Fri Dec 21 01:08:53 2012 at level 1:
On some level, Kaenis always knew he could never be his father. He could
not kill mercilessly, without emotion. So he learned to hide them.

And he was good at it, even after killing his own father. Murdering him?
No, he assassinated the man. Even still, Kaenis did not react. He
disposed of the bodies, as he was trained to do, and he moved on without
so much as blinking.

He hid his emotions from the world, but not from himself. He felt
something when he looked into the girl's eyes. He wanted her to live. He
mourned her death. She did not deserve to die.

His father was an evil man. He deserved his fate. But there was no
shortage of evil men. Two more would rise up take his father's place in
the world. And two more each, theirs.

And so Kaenis would have to deal with them as well, each in turn.

He was still a young man, still full of his own immortality. He knew in
his head that this was foolish. That he was destined to failure. But
Kaenis had a purpose now, a purpose beyond his father's contracts. He was
doing what he knew he must do, rather than what was simply best for him.

And what he was doing was killing all of those villains. Killing them all
before all of the innocent girls went extinct, the noble heroes hunted
down. Kaenis would not give up, would not stop, until he could claim they
were all safe from men like his father.

Gray

Added Wed Dec 26 09:51:22 2012 at level 22:
Kaenis was true in his newfound purpose, but he was far from perfect.
Some might say he had too much of his father in him to turn away from
that path, but a wiser mad would see the truth.

Kaenis lived a vicious, violent life up to this point. Blood and death
were what Kaenis knew, they were what he understood.

What he did not understand was the shifting allegiences, the politics and
the confusion of a life around other men. Kaenis knew only his father
growing up, no others. His life was filled with people who should be
killed, and people who should be allowed to live. Black, and white.

Perhaps in the future Kaenis may come to understand the world of gray. He
may come to accept a foe one day may be a friend the next. He may even
one day listen to the goblin that incessantly claims he is not like the
others.

But perhaps he will never learn. While he walks the same path as many
great Paladins, Kaenis is certainly no saint. Raised by a bloodthirsty
killer, could he be blamed for sharing similar traits?

Focus & the Fortress

Added Sun Jan 6 07:41:24 2013 at level 27:
Kaenis found himself at the gates of the legendary Fortress of Light.
With some hesitation, he wrote his name upon the roles of Pledges, hoping
to serve the reknown Holy Brigade of the Phoenix.

He could hear his father scoffing from beyond the grave. Just an
assassin.. nothing more than a hired killer. Not fit for their holy
ranks.

Kaenis knew better. He knew his place was as a Maran, a hero of Thera,
fighting the righteous fight.

But Kaenis was wrong.

Their Marshall scoffed as well when he was approached, or so it seemed to
Kaenis' ears. He insisted the Brigade was more than an army. It was a
family. A brotherhood.

Memories of his father surfaced, and Kaenis knew he wanted nothing to do
with another family. He had hoped to join an army, to carry out a war.
Not to hold hands and sing songs, and certainly not to let his attention
divert from what was important.

And at that moment, he vowed to do it alone. Let the Marshall focus on
his family and his friendship. Kaenis focused on his war, for it was so
much more important.
