Description

You take in the battle-hardened form of the half-drow warrior Kaethra. Her
dirty blonde hair hangs in uneven clumps, the ends stiff with grime and dried
blood. This mess frames the olive skin of her heart-shaped face. Indigo eyes,
vivid and unblinking, shine from shadowed sockets. Sunken cheeks and full,
naturally black lips completed the haunted appearance.
Otherwise she's short, strong, and generally looks like trouble. The armor
she wears is battered and stained, the cloth beneath stiff with old gore. She
smells of sweat, late nights, stale beer, and old leather.

                    1. Fighter. Ruled by Courage and influenced by Knowledge, Kaethra was born to
be a mighty warrior in a small, half-drow package. Her mother, a human used
and discarded by a drow transmuter, made her study more than she liked to get
the most out of the elf blood in her and was generally far too realistic with
her about how life would go from far too early an age. It's no surprise that
Kaethra was a macabre, tomboyish child. The upshot of this is that when she
wasn't ruining her clothes beating up the local boys, she was back home
reading romanticized histories, becoming something of a student of War.
2. Obsessed. Kaethra has become totally convinced that history is in danger
of repeating itself as cabals battle it out for dominance with mages seeking
out new and creepier magic than ever seen. Shifters! Conjurers! Vampyres!
Change, to anyone who's looked at history, when it comes to magic, spells
Trouble with a capital T. Maybe a capital ROUBLE as well.
3. Motivated. She got her push from a dark elf who held himself out as dear
old dad. He showed up and said she could be Arcane too, maybe even land a
spellgaunt or a werewolf form to beat the other kids up with. It's tough as a
third party to know whether it this drow bein particularly creepy with his
hand on her thigh as he relayed this dream for her, an innate reaction that
was in her the whole time, stories from ma, or some combination of all that
or something else entirely. What can be said is that she had the courage to
look him in the eye and say no way. Also that his relaxation spell that was
supposed to make her listen more pliably to his idea triggered a spellbane
and sent him running! Now she doesn't just look at magic askance but with raw
disgust.
4. Haunted. Unfortunately, knowledge comes with a price, and the fact that
she was bred to be a mage haunts her living and sleeping hours. In dreams she
fights monstrous shapeshifting forms and waking she'll occasionally see and
hear mages that aren't really there, beckoning her to join them or attacking
her or simply intruding in conversation. She seeks the Battleragers to see
her foes from her ghosts more clearly... and if she sometimes fights a mage
nobody else can see well we've all got our baggage.
5. Pastimes. Kaethra's courage has allowed her to navigate all this with a
fatalistic smirk, a lot of beer, and what wit her beleaguered brain can
manage. Her studies haven't been forgotten and as she's grown up she's found
she enjoys more and more curling up with a history or even the occasional
fiction. She likes wordplay and her love language is getting smacked around
in the arena. She despises a sore loser.

                    A swell time

                    6. Wanted. Kaethra's a criminal right now. It's not about really loving that
criminal life. It's about sending a message. There's no place a Scout can't
turn into a deathtrap, even a city full of special guards. Cities have lots
of corners and intersections. And they're close to pits. Hard to flee in for
it. That knowledge got her a magistrate invoker's skull and a wanted mark.
The bigger idea is to make mages thin twice about where they're safe from
her. Show them she can operate effectively in or outside the law. She's
satisfied that she has accomplished what she set out to with this stint as a
criminal. But she'll keep it going as long as she can. Suicide is for
cowards.
7. Scouting. It's all about finding mages wherever they are, but not just
about running around. She's getting to know their trends, getting to know
their spots, getting to know their friends and hers. Battlerager pride keeps
her from asking for help with her haunts... er... hunts... but knowledge is
power here. She files everything away in her head. Drinks away the stuff that
isn't useful.
8. Ghosties. True sight means she can tell the difference between dream and
reality, but she still sees ghosts everywhere. She just reacts to them a
little differently. She thinks of herself as a ghost in process. She's
"haunting" mages, pushing herself to adapt and finesse situations. Sometimes
that means sneaking up for a bash. Sometimes it means just running around
looking like an idiot until they think she's bleeding enough to be a soft
target.
9. Work. Panmorne said it. Lots to be done. Courage guides her, intelligence,
strength, and wisdom are all cultivated. Sometimes when she goes to sleep in
her hut she drifts off and before her nightmares start, she thinks I guess ma
raised me right. Waking, in between mage haunts she's looking to grow herself
and the village. To wit: she caught a would-applicant with a flame blade
before he made a mess of his aspirations. Didn't savage the dummy, just set
him firmly straight. Gave him a nice mace from her own inventory. Sent him to
kill a mage clean of magic he couldn't see. It's not something she'd brag
about nor would it occur to her to bring up again. The guy owned it, gave the
magic to Tahren straight away, and went and killed a mage. The important
thing is everyone did right by the Village.

                    10. Allies. The village is kin chosen and bound by blood and oaths. That's
tighter than any other ties. For the rest, Kaethra's choosy. Allies don't
have to be brethren, villagers, whatever you want to call them. She ditched
the Tribunal when they got too cozy and finished her learning with the
berserker later. Except for the dwarf, they reek of magic even when they're
not using it directly. Heralds keep congratulating her on evil mage kills.
They could be allies in the right scenario.
11. Recruiting. The thing is allies can only take the village. She's tried to
push applicants along. Easy touches. A hut has to be earned and part of
that's showing you're village material. Write a note here, tell me if you
need something there. Embrace whatever it is that fuels your hate and go kill
mages. Getting Broghdin in was... nice. And the rest of the village aren't
lightweights, especially that elf Liryn. But there aren't enough of any path.
Bringing the place back to life when it's so dominated by ghosts and so
bereft of living villagers is an impossible task. But she's a Scout. When it
seems impossible it's her damned job to find a way.
12. Enemies. Mages, yeah, that's obvious. Magic? Kind of. The war's against
mortals using magic, if you want to get really nuanced. Not a conversation
she'd open with most. But that makes the veil an enemy. And while she wasn't
initially interested in Zizaerix or his followers she's now certain they fall
under commandment III and need killing as much as any village enemies.

                    13. Parity. Hmuriy is the only Butcher in the ranks. But when he tells her
that parity is only for berserkers and offers her help fighting a tarasque
Kaethrae takes him to task. She's insulted, so she deals with that in the
Circle. Asks him why he'd offer to jump in on a one on one fight. He says
it's because parity is only for berserkers and she's a Scout. So she thinks
about burning his hut, thinks about what the old man said about getting the
village ready for the rites. Smacks the drow around a bit until he sullenly
agrees to follow "her" parity. She'll be smacking him around more until he
gets it or she gives up on him.
14. Ambition. Veylarosh wants to be a drillmaster. She tells him being a
legend isn't about saying it. It's about what you do. So go show everyone
what living the commandments, living the pillar, living as a battlerager is.
It's not complicated. Then that mage nightreaver starts crying about him
jumping in a fight to gang up on her. Kaethra doesn't listen much to mages.
And she likes Veylarosh. He's doing what he should be training and hunting
mages. She'll just ask him about it real direct.
15. Criminality. It's still intentional but now that she's Drillmaster she's
got to set a damned example. That means chasing the mages to the cities and
then chasing them out again even if others won't. Broghdin gets it, but he
can't be awake all the time. It's a role in the village that needs filling so
she does it.
16. Examples. She's dying a lot. It's worth it to show Thera there's still a
battlerager who will be out there no matter how bad the odds are. To show the
village it's an option. Yeah, everyone wants to kill a battlerager. Story as
old as the ages. But Panmorne didn't ask her to die a lot for the village. He
asked her to train everyone up for the Rites. She'll drink a lot to get
through it but will redouble her efforts on training up the new recruits.
