Description
This striking, athletic specimen of a Centaur stands tall and proud, clad
in warrior garb and armed to the teeth. His weathered face has a straight
nose, bushy eyebrows and a short, thick beard matching color with his long
mane of grizzled hair. His eyes are hazel, looking almost like they shift
color in varied lighting, and he looks ever so alert and attentive.
From the waist down the creature's hide molds seamlessly into a buckskin
colored equine coat. Decades of fighting may have left scars all over it,
but his powerful back and sturdy hooves look no less accustomed to bearing
the rigors of travel and the load of heavy armor, although he may be a bit
on the slow side trying to sprint. Luxurious feathering covers all four of
his legs down from the fetlocks, all black as well as his bushy equine tail.
Well-groomed as he is, there isn't much decoration or fanciful trinkets on
him, most of his garb being on the practical side and lacking any heraldry,
although his lance does sport a banner of arms: an open eye engraved upon a
tome's cover. Other than that, a casual onlooker may easily be led to think
of him as a simple wandering knight - and a warhorse in the same package.
Role
Knight Errant
Added Sun May 15 02:43:07 2016 at level 3:
War is everything Kanlax knows. Orphan of war, found and adopted by a
warrior, groomed to become a mercenary, dreaming of being a knight, and
although his blood yearned for the wilds, he chose to train in the guild and
hope he can fit in the fighting force of the society that brought him up.
Unfortunately, while he is a talented fighter, his chaotic nature makes him
terrible at teamwork. The Seantryn Guard didn't want him, nor did the Blood
Tribunal, and his first year in the Aturi militia didn't exactly bring him
any favors. And being a knight? Might as well forget the idea.
He could have joined his foster father's mercenary company, but he feels
being a sword-for-hire would conflict his inner sense of morality. In the
end, Kanlax decided if he cannot have a niche in Seantryn, he is going to
travel and find his calling elsewhere. He built a hidden shack outside the
city, where he returns to from time to time between his travels, which are
now leading him farther and farther away.
In his dreams, he is a wandering knight, wise and strong, of no fixed abode
but travelling and righting wrongs wherever he sets his hoof.
Anti-cabal stance
Added Wed May 25 03:11:40 2016 at level 51:
Cabal dogmatism puts Kanlax off in a bad way. Fortress or Tribunal he could
be friendly with as he recognises them as protectors of people's well-being,
perhaps flawed as they are, but the idea's there. Taking such a duty himself
he wouldn't want and he's fairly happy with his independence.
What's bad is that the allegedly freedom-promoting cabal, Outlander, looks
to him just like another flavor of inflexible dogma, often both in agreement
in disagreement with his own views. He has been taught to see the value in
attributes of civilization (money, social graces, use of metal and stone),
and is not about to slip into savagery just because he finds no acceptance.
A knight should be civil, versed in art and wit, and Kanlax ever strives to
be all that. He is, however, only now coming to peace with the chaos in his
soul, inner conflict previously causing him to be aloof and standoffish with
people, even snarky. Despite what he was told all his life, he feels he can
be irrational and free-spirited, and still have his sophistication, honor
and pride. Some people just focus too much on formal status, Kanlax merely
wants to do what knights do, and then, in spirit, he is one.
Not black and white

The world must be so simple if you're a dogmatist.
I've had ambiguous choices many times. I once guided a mage towards a wand
in a vault, against the will of goodly guardians. I showed him how to get
to the wand without killing anyone. I could've just refused to help, taking
the responsibility off my shoulders, but knowing the mage would've probably
had to fight and slay some of the guardians as he explored on his own.
Is it better to aid in stealing from them to save them, or to wash your
hands and let them die? Or should I have turned on the mage? I'm not sure
I would like whatever different dogmas have to say about it.
I'll freely give advice and guidance without prying too much, unless the
beneficiary clues themselves as evil immediately. I can't see auras, does
that mean I should assume they're evil until I learn otherwise? Hell no.
I've got trade connections everywhere, even in Udgaard and Imperial guilds.
Does that make me a bad man? What if I use the acquired goods or money from
my deals to fight the very oppression of the Empire?
Speaking of commerce... I'm probably the wealthiest Centaur ever by now.
I could invest in land and declare myself lord of Centaurville or whatever.
Or give to the poor, but I WILL make sure about them first. Money, unlike
advice or guidance, is much easier to misuse.
Looking back

I am sixty-three years old. I'm only barely feeling my age, which lends me
hope that I have yet a long time ahead. It would be past prime for a human,
but in all these years people never ceased to remind me: I am not human.
But what have I done in these years?
A lot of the time has been spent securing my well-being, but also making
friends and contacts, and giving counsel in adventuring tricks, commerce,
even magic. In fact, through certain connections, I'm a proud member of the
Tower of High Sorcery, even though I cast maybe one spell in my whole life
(the spell being purge disease with an amulet).
Renouncing any desire to affiliate with Cabals, I did meddle in their wars,
and I am more aware of politics than I previously cared to be. I applied my
fighting strength sparingly, focusing on helping people instead of helping
causes. Reasons for that? Different good causes can come into conflict, and
some good causes will have evil people defending them.
I still saw plenty of bloodshed, and that is alright, I trained for that.
I regret I could do so little to save Wriennen from griefs and pains of
her Acolyte duty. It is a selfish thought I allowed myself: she could have
been happier elsewhere. With me. Does safer mean happier? Was I even capable
of providing that safety? I was reduced to trying to teach her to fight...
It pains me so much to even think of it now.
But I must let that pass and continue.
Looking forward

I turned my eye to religion. Being a freelance warrior, I thought of paying
homage to the Lord of Strife, Jormyr, who makes no difference of good and
evil but cares that the struggle continues. I saw him as a personification
of primal elements, who are not evil, but are there to make us strong.
I fought side to side with his priestess Amaya, and found our thinking
aligns well. I know destruction is a means through which I could make the
world better. It appeals to my pride as a warrior, to my long-suppressed
savage instinct.
And that is exactly why I will not take that path.
***
The dream I had has revealed another option. After a red herring chase
through Organia and a string of seemingly odd events I found my way into a
garden citadel, where an ancient elf, the spitting image of the one from
my dream, revealed himself as Magus Ignolmeer.
We spoke of fate and choices, and I remembered that, once, I had already
contemplated coming here to seek blessing. The idea of making the world
better by teaching, inspiring, showing example appealed to me greatly,
although there had been more than a healthy dose of ambition on my part,
a desire for respect and status, something I was denied in my hometown.
It took time to understand that success in bringing people up to height is
also its own reward, and there is more that I must learn about this calling.
I am willing to learn.
The new spring

"In the absence of so many, you are kind of like an emissary of your entire
species.", I was told. If you think about it, that's a mite frightening.
I was often worried about this day that I see Centaurs again, what if I
strayed so much from my kin that there's no more possibility of acceptance?
After all, I didn't grow up with my own, and I met so few of them, and so
much time has passed since their latest resurgence that it feels like it was
another age. (Incidentally, it was.)
But while I've been writing my book about rare species of Thera, I found
a new perspective. I'm not going to look upon this as a challenge or test.
Instead, it is a chance to learn something new.
I've seen enough prejudice and misleading lore about Centaurs. Growing up,
I was taught that my kind is by nature lustful, violent and intractable, and
told to school myself against that kind of impulse. In the end this served
me well, even though I eventually learned that these fears were baseless, as
inclinations of violence and evil among Centaurs have long since been weeded
out by the wars of the past ages.
I look in the mirror and I see a Centaur. If I turned out better than people
thought I would be, then perhaps the other Centaurs will also be better than
what I expected of them.
Evolution of character
Added Fri Aug 4 05:26:38 2017 at level 51:
Earliest in Kanlax' life, there were two major aspects to his personality.
The first was freedom in the sense that he never did anything he wasn't
comfortable with, and avoided taking any serious obligations upon himself.
The second was his inner conflict of nature vs. nurture: he never felt too
comfortable in the confines of civilization, but he also was brought up to
value its comforts and to depend upon its products to a degree.
These two aspects defined his behavior in multiple ways:
* Lawful behavior. This is a manifestation of the first aspect as much as
the second - because being wanted for a crime is an obligation! And in
Kanlax' eyes, it's a more straining obligation than abiding by the laws.
* Self-control. At the time, he used to be afraid of "becoming the beast".
While this is no longer the case, suppressing emotions has become second
nature to him, and he is uncomfortable with too much display of affection,
anger, contempt, lust or other strong feelings.
* Lack of direction. He sought to make his impact on the world in various
small ways rather than dedicating himself to a single grand purpose.
Over time, these behaviors evolved. He managed to remain savvy with both
civilized and wilderness folk, as well as many magi and battleragers.
Over time, he adopted a philosophy that no side is in the right, and that
none of them have the capacity to build a better Thera. He even questioned
the Fortress with the same - he's not against fighting evil, but singular
focus on destroying every being with red-aura does not a better world make.
That was the time when he found the Citadel (or rather, the Citadel found
him). That's when another aspect of his personality manifested in full: a
desire to teach. He's vehemently against imposing his views and opinions,
but he figures a teacher can give ground for people to form their own.
The traits developed over time, in ways both good and bad.
What has been merely lawfulness of convenience has taught him the value of
diplomacy and understanding other people's motives. What has been a habit
of self-control has evolved into impartiality and scholarly thinking. But
at the same time he feels he has "seen it all" and may often act jaded or
even cynical. Or find refuge in dark humor.
What has been a lack of direction has become versatility and variety of
endeavor. He made a fortune in money, won tournaments and wrote books,
defeated enemies and achieved unique status as a legend of the lands.
And as he gets older, so does grow his obsession with making something that
will last beyond his lifetime. In this, he may be missing the important
matter of simply enjoying life.
