Description
Before you is a slender half-drow, a shadow amongst the shadows. His skin is
a dusky shade of honey, with a mild sunburn further coloring his features.
His bright, narrow purple eyes have a sense of amusement about them, laugh
lines just forming on his slanted eyes. He wears his straight black hair
tied loosely at the nape of his thin neck, tied up neatly with a piece of
brown leather. He has a well-oiled, jewel bound, Hamsah style beard that
strikes a shocking contrast with his obvious drow-like features. Despite his
slight frame, the half-drow is well muscled, and there are calluses on his
hands that look more from hard work than combat. Even so, he has a number of
weapons held in bound leather holsters attached to various points of his
body. He is swathed in the robes of an Acolyte, glimmering in white and gold
about his body, the sides tailored to be split for easy horse riding. A
small golden chain hangs around his neck, with an amulet fashioned simply
from gold wire into a sun dangling from it.

Background

Karnix al'Shaheer
Karnix was born after the dalliance of Shaheeb al'Shaheer, the Sultan's
premeire horse trainer, and Deetrix, a drow diplomat to Hamsah. Raised by his
father in the stables of the Sultan, Karnix soon became a natural horse rider
and trainer.
It had always been expected that Karnix would follow in his father's footsteps
as a horse trainer, but an event in his adolescence set his fate askew.
Shopping for new chaps in the Hamsah market, Karnix witnessed two guardsmen
take the hand of a starving beggar who had stolen loaves of bread. Loudly
trying to interrupt the proceedings did little but earn Karnix a night in the
Sultan's jail, and a serious scolding in the morning.
The next day, Karnix went the paladin's guildhall and offered himself as a
squire.
Karnix believes that the law must serve good, and not the other way around. He
believes in the judgment of sinners based not simply on their guilt, but also
on the intent in their heart, and the relative consequence of their action.
Karnix speaks in a slow drawl, using many horse and ranch colloquialisms.
This can lead people to believe that he is slow or naive, but he is simply
folksy.
Once someone has proven, especially through action, their darkness, Karnix
will be relentless in hunting them down and providing them their just
desserts.
A Palaver
Added Tue Apr 11 13:14:41 2023 at level 26:
After suffering defeat at the hands of the rabid servant of Ergush - Pvask -
they both agreed to a sharing of piety in the Shadow Grove in the past.
Pvask shared that he followed the first law of Nature - that only the strong
survive. In response, Karnix said you were as only as strong as your
neighbors and family. Pvask countered that Karnix blindly followed laws, while
Karnix gently admonished Pvask that he wasn't a servant to Laws necessarily,
only the Light, and doing the right thing wasn't bound by any mortal Law.
After some back and forth, Pvask seemed content that whether Karnix knew it or
not, he followed the first Law. But Karnix was troubled - not by Pvask's
mistaken translation of Karnix's spirit, but by how blind Pvask was to his own
cruelty. He silently suspected that Pvask had been hurt by some trauma in the
past, and resolved to figure out what exactly had happened.
In the end, they parted with Pvask promising to continue hunting Karnix, while
Karnix contemplated on how to get Pvask to perform his own self reflection. Or
whether it was foolhardy to continue to try to convert Pvask, and whether some
rabid animals are best hunted themselves.
A Letter to the Fortress
Added Mon Apr 17 00:22:52 2023 at level 51:
To my brothers and sisters of the Fortress,
I must confess somethin' to y'all. While fighting a number of foes, and in the
heat of battle, I struck a Magistrate in Galadon. Now I ain't mean to hit him
within the city limits, but that does not absolve me of committing a crime
accordin' to the Law held dear by the Spire. I went promptly to Magistrate
Gukao to submit to his authority, and with a heavy heart, he had his guards
mete the punishment out for that crime - death.
Now the true sin weren't breakin' the Law, nor strikin' a dark hearted
Magistrate. The true sin were the fact that I brought in a brother and a
sister into my own accident. They reacted instinctively, and if they had
struck the Magistrate 'fore he fled, they would've been judged as criminals as
well. For that I'm dreadfully sorry.
I ain't one to go 'round burnin' cities, or even ruthlessly huntin' the dark
hearted into the cities. But I 'xpect if I seen an innocent bein' harmed by
someone within the cities, I'd feel obliged, according to both my guild's code
and the litany of the Fortress, to defend them. That weren't what was
happenin' though. So for that I feel ashamed.
The Paladin Code states: "Respect the laws of the land and those who seek to
enforce them." That doesn't mean we're a slave to em, nor that we allow evil
to hide behind them laws. But it also means when we do commit a crime - like I
did - that we face the consequences face on, and accept our punishment.
I ask that we all consider how we be relatin' to the Laws of the land, and how
they be reflectin' on our own morals within the Fortress.
I love you all. May the Light shine on our family brightly, washin' away our
wickedness and doubts.

A Missive to the Spire - A Storm Approaches
Added Tue Apr 25 11:40:41 2023 at level 51:
I weren't gon' send a missive on this, but since I now be accused o' lying by
Magistrates - a violation of my Code - I reckon I will.
A day ago, I was unwarranted. I hadn't helped no one, healin', smashin' with
staffs, er otherwise. In fact, I had just raised my head off'n my pillow. I
approached the Fortress, when I seen the Emperor in the mountains alone. I
ain't seen no Magistrates nor the Provost. We crossed blades momentarily, and
I retreated. When I approached the Fortress again, at the feet of the Maran, I
seen the Emperor and his Spire cronies, and I was instantly struck by the
Emperor, and yer Provost's guards attacked me from the rear.
Again, I ain't helped no one. Hadn't even seen my brothers er sisters yet.
Didn't even know what anyone was doin' near the Fortress.
I 'ave turned myself in when I done wrong. My first warrant, I laid my neck
out fer Gukao's guards to chop at. Took my staff out my hand and set it aside.
My two other warrants have been fer healin' my brothers and sisters when
they've been in dire straits, and I ain't apologizing fer either of em. I
understand the Spire's perspective on em, but I ain't morally agreein' with
em. And that's fine, we can have them disagreements, and I'll take them
warrants on the chin.
But to have a Provost order his guards to be attackin' me, assistin' the
Emperor, against an unwarranted Acolyte at the feet o' the Maran - that is a
declaration of the Spire bein' an arm of the Empire - and, frankly, seems a
declaration that the Spire joins the Empire in war against the Fortress. I
cain't see it anyway else.
Karnix al'Shaheer, Acolyte of the Golden Sun, humble worshipper of Azorinne
