Description
From beneath a fringe of ebony hair peer out two navy blue eyes,
they glisten in the light, seemingly searching for a new
adventure or glorious sight. A prominent nose parts his face like
the bow of a ship, the folds created run down to the tips of his
lips hidden within the youthful untamed beginnings of scraggly
facial hair.
His dark hair does not entirely cover his ears, cut in a crude
straight line but leading back to an unruly mop of hair which
falls almost to the back of his collar where it makes an attempt
to curl away in a life of its own.
His six-foot frame moves about with purpose, his stance both
precise and accurate, he maintains a demeanor confident and calm.
The man's clothing shows signs of wear but is obviously well
maintained with prideful diligence.
Observation beyond a glance draws you to a quirk of sorts - as
he goes about his things a repetitive habit is clear - using his
the thumb of his left hand, he fidgets with his wedding ring, a
band of thick gold, beneath which can be seen very pale skin,
likely having not seen the light of the sun in several years.

As Karnver loaded the last of the wares onto the wagon - a heavy
load of modern artifacts, willow rods and potions of various
viscosities and vibrant colors - he bit his lip, where the taste
of his wife's sweet kiss that morning still lingered. She was
heavily pregnant with their first child and desperately wanted
him to stay in case the baby came with urgency, but Karnver had
insisted that with these potential profits they could afford to
move out of Habibs establishment into a place of their own to
begin their family.
With the stablemaster paid, Karnver took the reins on the sitting
board of his wagon and lashed the mules into life. The freshly
shod hooves of his impressive beasts of burden stomped themselves
into action bearing westward down the great road of Thera.
Reaching his first destination, he hitched his two mighty mules
to the post outside the Galadonian Settlement graveyard, Karnver
began to sift through his wares for proposal to the wand dealer.
The mules had been a good investment by his account, his travel
through the Grove and within the void had been swift, but not
without exertion. He did not notice the footsteps approach behind
him.
Without a moment to react, a cloth was pressed firmly to his
face, a potent concoction of paralytic vapors was within him
quickly. He shut his mouth instinctively but already he felt his
limbs going numb. His eyelids heavy from the inhalation, he could
not see the gate, and could only hear it as it creaked open
followed by the sound of his own inert body being dragged amongst
the tombstones.
He was dumped down roughly upon the solid floor of a tomb, the
large pebbled concrete was cold upon his face, but his limbs
still had no feeling. His attention was drawn to the muttering of
his assailant, he caught the odd word here or there.. Names! His
name, his wife's name... This madman knew them. The muttering
became a chant, an incarnation.
Karnver, knowing his limbs had no life in them, kept silent, but
managed to squint his eyes open as the man turned him, cruelly
stripping him of his cloaks, boots and belt. Through his squinted
eyes he saw his attacker, if he were not already paralyzed he'd
have gone into shock for he saw only himself slipping into his
own cloaks and boots. He watched helplessly, his urge to call out
and scream but the act was beyond him. The light that had
streamed into the tomb was severed then as the concrete
portcullis was lowered, the barrier now sealed him within.
The progression of his recovery was mere hours, but for Karnver
it felt like an eternity. By the time he was able to get his feet
beneath him and scramble to the portcullis, he discovered the
weight and mechanism of the gate far too much for him to manually
lift. He screamed until his voice broke and so his mind began to
break.
What did this doppelganger want with him? His family? His child?

He turned away from the exit to the tomb, dropping down to his
buttocks, his back against the gate In the darkness he noticed a
shimmering glow from beneath a concrete ledge. He pounced upon
it, a pink potion. The potion he knew to be pass-door must have
fallen from his belt when it was ripped from him. He quaffed the
mixture and was immediately out amongst the gravestones of the
Graveyard proper - the now night sky was lit by a moon reaching
its midpoint. He ran, his legs still wobbly, to the tie hitch
only to find his mules and wagon gone.
The run was tiring and by the time he reached the void the sun
was already sending rays of pink streaking out from the distant
horizon. Through the void he rushed and down through the tunnel
to the Grove. He passed through the Herbery and then crossed the
Pond quickly, his path now headed south to the Eastern Road which
would take him to Hamsah. He came to an abrupt stop. Where
yesterday he had seen saplings and seedlings now stood fully
grown, mature trees and shrubs taller than he.
The chill of the winter morning bit his neck... Winter?
... It was not Winter.
Habib did not recognize him and Hamsah had changed. The once-familiar
faces were few and unhelpful. The biggest realization came when
he went to the Library for the official date - 200 years had passed
since he had left Hamsah on his new mules.
For days he wandered, questioned - himself and the locals. For
weeks he fought away the thoughts, but this day he found
himself walking among the gravestones of his now somewhat
foreign hometown. As he walked one section of the western
yards, a cluster of gravestones caught his eye. Here was his name.
He stood, frozen, peering at the stones and overgrown graves
beneath him:

Setting Out -
Karnvers journey begins. He leaves his family behind to go sell
wares in the ancient Galadonian Settlement within the Past. With
a baby on the way, he needs to make sure he can provide for them.
The journey is without peril, and he is hopeful for the return to
his family.
A Grave Encounter -
Arriving at his destination, Karnver prepares to seek out a
merchant for his wares, but is overcome by a mysterious figure.
Dragged into the graveyard, he finds himself helpless and at the
mercy of his assailant. Slowly coming to his senses, he finds
that his assailant is HIMSELF?! Left with nothing, he finds a way
out of the tomb within which he was imprisoned.
Far from Homecoming -
Karnver rushes home as quickly as possible. Upon reaching his
hometown, it is nothing like he thought it would be. Home has
changed. The people are not the same, and those few that remember
him only do so as a glimmer of the past. Distraught, Karnver
seeks solace in the outskirts of the town and finds himself in a
graveyard. While wandering the sepulcher rows, he soon finds a
cryptic and ominous clue to his predicament.
Academy and Beyond -
Standing still as he had done for days, Karnver finally reached
out to someone, the Provost Magistrate of the Blood Tribunal. The
discussion brief, and details lacking, but to exhume the grave of
Karnver Quillin (the imposter) Primdella told him to speak to a
local bureaucrat. It was then Karnver made the decision to seize
power - figuring the investigation would be handled no better
than by his own hands he swore to Primdella his oath to the
Tribunal - he would join the Academy of Thera at once and when
the time came the Provost ensured him a station within the city
of his families stones.

Exhausted from a long stint on duty and the retrieval of the
scales from the Battle Ragers, Karnver salutes his fellow
officers and retreats to the confines of the Spire's Library.
Within the Library he finds fetches himself a drink and settles
himself on a padded chair at the polished oaken table. He swigs
at his drink and mutters the the names of his Lost: Shayleen,
Jettod, Hildiline
With an anguished look he produces a quill and dye and begins
to scribe upon a blank parchment, left out for note magistrates
for note taking and letters.

With a last drunken gulp from his glass, he slides back his
chair and throws down his quill. Leaving the Library he
beckons to his minions saying "Come children, one last task
before I rest".
While Karnver slept, his parchment travelled. The winds taking
it far from the Spire's Library, out across the Sea of Despair
to a fitting reader: the God of Loss.
