Description
His hair and beard are a snarled mass of ochre curls tinged with red.
Although some of this rusty color might be natural, a corroded iron
adorns his head, and his armors are a collection of battered pieces
that would shame any knight--or dwarf--of quality. Where his skin
shows he sports bruises and scars as naturally as an elf wears
mithril, and when his young growth of beard parts you can't help
but notice broad chipped teeth.
His shoulders have a lean set, wiry but not particularly broad,
and his limbs are unremarkable for a member of his race.
At his left hip is a leather beltpouch, bulging beneath its
red leather flap, and on its top is a carefully tooled image
of a sun peeking through the clouds. You also notice
Role
The dwarf
Added Sun Nov 4 07:05:36 2012 at level 11:
Karzgredya Smeltbellow
is the second son of Kardrigda and Madya of the Redhorn Hold, sole heir to all they no longer
possess. His family moved to Akan when he was a child because Kardrigda's efforts to
reestablish a dwarven fortress there were lost in the abandoned mine with the elder son.
He and his parents, long past the age of apprenticeship, were forced to to earn their daily
gruel working in the communal reduction facility at the bellows.
As a result of being viewed as coming from a family of failures, Karzgredya seeks to restore
his sense of honor through the respect he earns from his dwarven peers. Hard work, tenacity
and resilience are traits he admires as properly dwarvish and are integral to establishing a
praise-worthy name.
His family lost their wealth and honor through their failed entrepreneurial ventures, so
Karzgredya will restore what he can of the latter through making a name for himself by
other means, and his plan is to use that to win a bride with gold and title when he retires.
Mines, fires, poles.

The warning bell rang, and shouting immediately echoed down the mine. Tragrid,
Karzgredya's father, waddled down the corridor as fast as his corpulent legs
could carry him, his pick at the ready.
Ominously, the warning bell fell silent. Karzgredya ran after him toward
the shouting, shrill bestial screeches, and clangs of metal, and the young
dwarf's hand's clutched at the pry bar. Orcs? Duergar? He was not yet grown,
but he would show them what he was made of.
The ascending corridor turned sharply, and the two dwarves saw the carnage at
their mine's opening. Two dwarvescousins--lay still, their bodies covered in
blood. Two Udgaard men with swords stood over them, and behind them porters were
bringing in straw and herding pigs into the mine.
Tragrid roared and closed with the men, but the tunic-clad soldier easily deflected
the dwarven attack and countered with a thrust that Tragrid barely parried with
his axe handle. The second man, his hair and beard glistening in scented oils,
was moving in to flank. Tragrid grunted as the soldier's blade darted out,
and the miner immediately fell back.
Karzgredya stepped forward, using the long metal bar to thrust at the two soldiers
and cover their retreat back into the mine. The Udgaard men came only a little ways
after them, and soon the two had changed their withdrawal into a fullout run.
They gathered the remaining four dwarves in the mine to their aid.
Faith and Future

"You refused to bribe them!" Karzgredya's uncle slammed his meaty fist on the desk.
Tragrid was looking at the floor, his hands worrying the hem of his wool shirt.
"And you crawl back here, looking for work, with my dead sons' blood on your hands!"

After having worked in his own mine, moving ore throughout his brother's
bloomery took its toll on Karzgredya's father. The dwarf had shorn his beard,
some say out of mourning and others out of shame, and the proof of his success,
his impressive weight, Tragrid quickly lost in the fierce heat of the smelting
fires.
At night, Karzgredya thought of his plight. Wicked men had triumphed because
there had been none to defend the mine, and his father was now in despair.
Karzgredya's plight was little better, if he chose to continue to follow his
father.
Was he, too, fated to this life?
Karzgredya ground his knuckles against the wall above his cot. Destiny is shaped
by the choices we make. He would adapt to what life had given him, and he would
choose another future.
A future that cherished integrity and fought against the wicked. He would speak with
the soldiers in the Redhorn mountains who wore the phoenix upon their tunics.
