Role
sacrifice

After weeks and months of meditation before an empty altar, Kasir was
finally visited by the goddess Baerinika. For the first time he heard the
history of the one he calls "Huntress". How she fought, and died, so that
her kinsman might live. How she subsequently refused the eternal rest she
had surely earned, continuing to serve even beyond death.
Kasir ponders these things. He has no kinsmen; he is no one's protector.
So the tale is a difficult one for him to understand. What could motivate
such self sacrifice? It cannot simply have been the desire for purity, as
noble as that might be. No. He can only assume it was love that wrought
this sacrifice; love that conquered death.
And so begins Kasir's journey as a squire. Protector of all who love
justice and mercy. His life a living sacrifice, poured out in service of
the One who is worthy.

It might seem counterintuitive that Kasir should join a thieve's guild,
considering it was the Hamsah guild who had his father slain. However,
life was not easy after he left the nomads. Not blessed with physical
prowess, and with no magical or musical training, if he was to serve the
Huntress it would have to be from the shadows. Kasir is acutely aware,
though, of the cruelty, greed and violence that typify Thera's thieves.
For this reason, he was particularly glad to meet Jirash, the guildmaster
in Voralian City. Here was one who understood the conflict inherent in
the guild, and who had lived a righteous life. Kasir thought perhaps in
this guild he might not be asked to violate his conscience. Especially
since, at the moment, there was no Godfather. And so he joined.
That's when the trouble started.
Unknown to Kasir, there was a certain balance of power among the
various guilds, and it was not centered in Voralian City. It was in
Galadon. And it was due mainly to the heavy-handed tactics of one
Kingpin. Not long after Kasir had joined the Voralian guild, he was
contacted by Iktul.
After refusing the Kingpin's polite offer of membership, Kasir was
informed that he was now the target of every thief in the Galadon guild,
and that approximately four out of every five thieves in Thera was one of
Iktul's men. As terrifying as that was, Kasir saw it as an opportunity.
How many of those in Galadon had been coerced into joining the guild under
threat of violence? How many chaffed at Iktul's heavy-handed tactics?
How many were members simply because they had never "belonged" anywhere
else, and so desperately craved the illusion of "brotherhood" Iktul
offered? Kasir wondered.
Then he vowed to create an alternative. A true brotherhood. One in which
members would be welcomed, not conscripted. One in which no man would be
asked to violate his conscience. A guild to serve as a haven for those
unwilling to submit to Iktul's autocratic rule, where no man would be
forced to call the wicked "brother". A grand vision indeed!
Now if he could just scrape together some cash...
mission

So too did he come to grow in respect and reverence towards the old
woman's deity, the Great Huntress. From his education in Hamsah, Kasir
understood that it was in fact Baerinika whom the seeress worshipped, but
held his tongue to avoid giving offense. For all his book knowledge of
the Maiden's faith, however, it was this frail, ancient woman who made it
real to him. She was always ready with a tale of the Huntress's aid to
the pure, or of some self-sacrificial act performed on Her behalf. These
Kasir took to heart, and became ashamed at the vanities of his past.
Eventually, his debt repaid and now a grown man, Kasir was offered a
permanent place among the nomads. Not as a servant, but as a brother and
comrade. As attractive as that seemed, Kasir could not help feeling that
his destiny lie elsewhere. Over the past four years he had lived as a
servant to the tribe, his status marked outwardly by the kufi hat he wore.
Now, however, given a chance to cast down that symbol of his servitude, he
was compelled to decline. No longer would he serve the tribe; that much
was true. But he would continue to bear that mark, as a symbol of his
service to another: the Great Huntress; desert cat; bane of the wicked.

The men who had killed his father, while somewhat detached, were not
inherently cruel, and so they had little desire to murder Kasir as well.
Instead, they bound him hand and foot, drug him out the city's south gate
and dumped him by the side of the Caravan Road. Perhaps someone would
have mercy on him, they thought. Regardless, he was no longer their
problem. Luckily for Kasir, the right person came along.
The old woman who happened to spot him was a seeress of sorts, attached
to one of the many tribes of nomads who wander the Arraille. Unlike most
others, though, who prayed to the animist spirits of the desert or the
ancients of Thar-Eris, this woman was a disciple of the Great Huntress.
The desert cat, who stalks the dunes in search of the wicked.
In truth, she followed the goddess Baerinika, though that name would
have been foreign to her. Whereas Baerinika is typically associated with
a Jaguar in more civilized regions, the emblem of the "Great Huntress" was
the puma, or mountain lion. Instead of opposing evil on a global scale,
the Huntress was primarily viewed as the enemy of the "winged devils"
(Talishidar) and "unholy ones" (Scions), which, together, comprised the
tribe's chief predators and symbols of evil.
So it was that this particular woman possessed a certain measure of
compassion and took it upon herself to see Kasir restored to health.
Being nothing if not practical, however, the tribe's expected Kasir to
repay his debt. So, once he was well, with no place to go, he stayed on
as a sort of indentured servant until such time as his debt was deemed
repaid. The tribe was fair but demanding, and the work was hard. Caring
for livestock was a far cry from cheating spoiled nobles in the market.
His time with the tribe was humbling for Kasir, but in an entirely
positive way. The loss of his father, processing through his grief, the
wisdom of the seeress and the tonic of good, hard, work all served to undo
the years of "training" he had received in Hamsah Mu'tazz. Rather than
resent his low station in the tribe, he was instead grateful for the mercy
he had been shown. Rather than sustaining himself through manipulation
and trickery, he came to understand the value of honesty, humility, and
service.

Kasir bin-Hashar was born the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Hamsah
Mu'tazz. Like most successful merchants, his father, Hashar, was not
particularly ethical. He paid lip service to the city's prominent
religions, but only to curry favor with others. He might give alms to the
poor in deference to Nasheer, but publicly and vocally in order to enlarge
his reputation for generosity. He might burn a sacrifice to appease the
father of devils, but only out of a superstitious belief that it might
bring him personal benefit. It was all a show.
Despite his flaws, Hashar was not an overly cruel man, and devoted much
time and effort to his son's upbringing. As the eldest son, Kasir was
groomed from day one to take over his father's business. He was educated
in language, arithmetic, the principles of supply and demand, and in the
art of persuasion. He was taught the religions and cultures of Thera's
peoples, with the thought that such insight might make equip him to be a
more capable salesmen when dealing with individuals from these cultures.
All the while, subconsciously, Kasir was learning to manipulate. To
conceal his true self and instead act as a sort of chameleon, molding his
personality to fit the hopes and fears of his clientele. He learned about
weighted measures, and other "tricks" of the trade. Also learned of the
valu of connections. Whether within the Sultan's palace or the guild of
theves, he came to understand the importance of such alliances. And,
eventually, why they are so dangerous.
When Kasir was a young teen, unbeknownst to him, his father began to
have extensive dealings with the Hamsah guild of thieves. Through them,
he was able to import the goods he needed for his business without paying
the Sultan's tariffs, thus gaining a substantial advantage over his
competition. While Kasir never discovered the reasons why or how, at some
point this relationship soured. To say the least.
So it was that one day an man entered their shop and signaled to his
father for assistance. As Hashar moved forward to oblige, another man,
who had somehow managed to slip in unnoticed, siezed upon him from behind
and ended his life with a single thrust of the knife. Kasir's first
thought was to scream, but before he was able, he fealt a heavy weight
connect with the base of his skull. Then he felt nothing at all.
