Description

A cloaked figure lounges here, the faint glow of emerald-green eyes coming from under the hood. A closer look, though, reveals a whiskered feline face belonging to a gray-furred felar. Years seem to have been kind to him, but it's obvious that his youth has long since passed. He is armed and carries himself with the confidence of a prowling hunter, but it's easy to see how often his ears twitch and jerk anxiously at every noise. His visible coat bears few scars, and overall he seems the type to avoid being in the open.

Role

Background

Added Sat Jun 29 15:07:49 2013 at level 10:
For six years Kazzru was nothing more than an errand boy for some eccentric
wizard who liked the old-fashioned idea of having a felar servant. Such life
was much better than the orphanage, though his kleptomanic tendencies have
got him in trouble with arcane devices more than once. Luckily, his natural
affinity for magic items has helped him avoid the worst.

Other than that, he wasn't a bad servant at all. However, it all changed
when his master's tower was overrun and destroyed by a band of BattleRagers.
He hid for a few days until hunger had drawn him away from the ruins and
into one of Thera's cities where he ended up in the warriors' guild.

He was not destined to be a knight, though, not with his dim understanding
of social norms and a growing habit of stealing things he wanted. Following
an year-long string of guildmaster's displeasures, the same day his gainful
ventures to the local marketplace became known, he was simply thrown away.

Now a young adult, he realizes he can't go on like that. He's homeless and
poor, and suffering from alcoholism. He's skilled enough in thievery to make
ends meet, but... After being rejected by society time and again, he still
wants to try and be something better than a disappointment he is now.

Dedicated to be better

Added Fri Jul 5 04:47:34 2013 at level 20:
Kazzru's dread of letting people down is very real.

What happened to him as a kid wasn't his fault, but it was his stealing
habits that got him kicked out of warrior guild apprenticeship. It was his
drinking that led him into more than one knife fight, and Kazzru is only
happy now that he was sane enough to not harm any truly innocent people.
His brashness once caused him to lose a companion to a hunting necromancer,
and he's now reluctant to take any allies with him for adventuring.

The irony is, a knife fight with an imperial bloodoath has also led him
to hear of the Fortress, mentioned by his defeated foe. Kazzru decided to
check out his sources and learn if such a cabal can help him find a way to
become a better person.

He knows what color blood is, but he wants to be a stable, sane individual
that people can respect and trust. While he can handle stress, he is also
afraid of what he may become if he fully devotes himself to killing - and
he has realized how much he enjoys stabbing people. So instead he wants to
temper himself by accepting the more spiritual ways of the Acolytes.

Reconciliations

Added Wed Jul 17 04:57:44 2013 at level 30:
"Dear Guildmaster,

Kazz writes this letter hoping for a last chance of reconciling his past
mistakes. Your guards have quite fervently kept Kazz from paying a visit to
the guild, but maybe that was only for the better. He just wishes to say he
is a reformed person now - and gives you his thanks for the lessons... all
of them. Kazz will try his best not to shame the new name you gave him.

Kazzru al-Khurair

P.S. Not daring to bother you further, but please accept this donation as a
token of goodwill - something Kazz was never able to do as an apprentice".

He counted the coins, it was 25 gold. Not too much to look like just trying
to pay off past grievances, and not too little to be insulting. Accepting
the name al-Khurair - "of the feline kind" in local dialect - will be his
true homage to that year spent in Hamsah Mu'tazz warrior guild.

Now, finding a trustworthy warrior to actually deliver the letter...

New Horizons

Added Mon Jul 29 05:29:51 2013 at level 40:
Voralian city has its own thieves' guild. How's that? Kazzru assumed that in
this place of Light there wasn't much in terms of crime - and a thief guild,
let alone one led by a retired Maran, was certainly unexpected.

Devoting time to his new contacts, he soon rose to the top, claiming the
title of Godfather. However, he feels this is in name only, for the guild
could use some development. With an abundance of dark-hearted lawmen, it's
the next logical step to have a strong underground to oppose them. Perhaps
there are ways to attract those few virtuous in his profession to join him.

Being the leader of the pack feels new to Kazzru. However, not only is he
an accomplished thief - his speech, charm and even calligraphic skill have
improved greatly as well during years spent in these lands. He retains the
quirk of speaking of himself in third person, because back in his homeland
saying "I" or "me" was taboo for lower-caste people such as felar. Today he
sees it, perhaps not entirely consciously, as a more humble way of talking.

Midlife crisis

Added Wed Aug 14 04:29:59 2013 at level 51:
It's too early for such, but age already worries Kazzru immensely. He wants
no retirement, as being useful to his chosen case is his strongest passion.

He feels that new issues have built up instead of those he overcame. His
failure to establish a strong guild eventually had him thinking it was a
waste of years and money that could go elsewhere. He lost friends and saw
how life marches on without them - how will it be when it's his time to go?

Admittedly, he has fallen behind in fighting prowess as a hero. But he still
has untapped potential, and his worries are not so much about becoming weak
as they are about not having time to explore every opportunity of what he
can do with his talents. For example, he has heard of dragon lair raids and
regrets never happening to be there.

Fear of old age spurs Kazzru to seek new, refreshing things in life. He is
cautious, though, that it isn't to detriment of his duty, his usefulness to
the Fortress. For a felar, he already knows quite a lot about religion, and
it occurs to him that there is a God whose tenets are close to what he wants
now. That God is Arvam, the patron of all those who seek to live their life
to the fullest. Kazzru now considers if it's wise to pray and learn more...

Kazzru's mixed stance on crime

Added Thu Aug 15 06:25:03 2013 at level 51:
Merf was here. Really badly beaten from fighting the Watcher. No barrier
as far as Kazzru's arcane vision could discern. One trip with his Frostbrand
sword would have been enough to serve justice to the evil giant.

But then Kazzru would have to clash with Torm the paladin magistrate.

Spire is really controversial to him. Do those laws make any sense? Would it
not be better to be able to strike the wicked everywhere? Kazzru's chaotic
nature gives little respect to rules and regulations. But he can't ignore
the fact that if there was no law, there would be way more stray fireballs
starting fires and killing bystanders in his beloved city.

Alas, life brought a vivid example quite soon of how laws are imperfect.
Seeing Brakrar rampage through the ranks of peacekeepers and not being able
to do anything in front of a young magistrate, the only words Kazzru could
muster after were "You still want Kazz to stay aside and do nothing?"

Well, those probably weren't the nicest words to say to a man surrounded by
mangled corpses of his peers. Worst ever in Kazzru's years as an Acolyte.

What's even worse, the situation highlights the whole problem Kazzru has
with the law, and he doesn't have a ready answer on how to deal with it.

(Player's note: in hindsight, it didn't occur to me to call altruism on a
peacekeeper and plead Brakrar to stop. Futile, but that's what Kazzru the
character would probably do. Though it all happened way too fast.)
