Description
A handsome young man stands proudly here, displaying a casual grace radiating
in confidence. Chestnut brown hair is pulled loosely behind his ears, hanging
just above his shoulders. Brilliant azure eyes brighten his face, as he looks
out at the world with a stalwart expression. While the easy smile and pink
cheeks of this Knight portray a friendly and youthful disposition, his
carefully controlled actions and fiercely burning eyes betray a depth of
determination not commonly seen.
Role
A weakness and strength

My earliest training at the Guild opened my eyes to the way of the Paladin. I
was accused of being overly aggressive in battle, and in hunting my enemies.
"Patience and diligence will guide your actions", as the Paladin's Code was
often quoted in one of my many lectures.
I knew, intellectually at least, that they were right. That, while my Courage
was never in question, it was only an admirable trait when tempered with at
least some level of forethought. It was an issue I struggled with, and never
fully conquered. It was suggested that a fear of falling in the same manner
of the Knight Galvin, that I acted with Courage bordering on foolishness, but
I cannot see that as truth. I am what I am. And when I know the path that
must be taken, I will do so, without concern to my own well being.
The Paladins are somewhat satisfied by this response, but I still sense their
hesitation. No one, I am told, is the perfect pupil. And we each have our own
demons to face, our own crosses to bear, and our own difficulties to
overcome. I am no exception.
A Squire and a Knight

I was born to unfortunate circumstances, I am told. What those circumstances
are, I could not say. But when I was still a babe, I was given to the Knight
Galvin. My father was a nomad and visited Seantryn Modan only briefly, from
what I gather of him. Why he came to the position of giving me to the Knight
I will never know. Though I expect I was not so much a gift, as a payment for
a debt owed.
I never contemplated the sort of Knight would take a child as payment, by the
time I had heard the story I was nearly 10 years in age, and 10 years in
service to him. He claimed to be a Holy knight, and until only recently I had
no reason to disbelieve it. Galvin was by no means a poor Knight, to my
Squire. He was able with a mace, and quick with a longblade. He wasted no
time in beginning my training in the martial skills required of our trade,
and proved himself an adept teacher. He spoke often of the Code of Paladins,
and made me memorize those tenents only shortly after I was old enough to
speak them. He seemed a good man, and an able Knight for the fifteen years
which I served him.
But two nights shy of my sixteenth anniversary of birth, we were raidedas
we camped in the forest. I saw them first, as Galvin slept. I screamed a
warning for Galvin and lept for my own mace.
I saw only three, but I assumed there must be more. By Galvin's silence at my
back, he must be in fierce battle with several. I was badly beaten and
bloodied, but by the battle's end, I was the victor. One of my enemies was
dead at my feet, the other two scurried back into the darkness of the woods.
I turned to give my aid to Galvin, only to realize that he was no where to be
seen. One set of footprints led away from the camp.. he was not chased, he
never even fought. I followed the tracks a short distance, to find the Knight
I had respected for these many years hiding in a tree. His look of fear and
shame were the last thing I saw as I passed out from the lack of blood.
I awoke what felt only a moment later, but I knew it must have been more. I
looked up to see a huge chamber, unlike any I had ever witnessed. The low
humming of a prayer reached my ears, and I felt a rush of warmth tingle
through ever pore of my body. Looking down, I saw an elder Paladin just as he
removed his hands from my wounds, now fully healed. As he looked at me with a
kind smile, I drifted back into unconsciousness.
When I awoke for the second time, I felt better than I had in many years. My
wounds were gone, leaving only the slightest scar in their place. Galvin was
no where to be seen, and I expected I would never see him again.
Galvin, I was later told, was a disgraced Paladin. He spent the last sixteen
years in an attempt to redeem himself, and had finally proven to himself that
he was not up to the task. I am grateful, though, that he brought me here. To
the Guild of Paladins, rather than merely the Temple or even Guild of
Healers. Galvin knew where my heart laid, and he knew that I might flourish
where he failed. I have no animosity for the Knight named Galvin. Only pity,
that while his lips were able to recite the Code, his soul was not strong
enough to live it.
