Description

Smells of grime and sweat drift as an uncomfortable herald of the creature you begin to study. At first glance he seems to be nothing but a bedraggled vagabond. His thick nose has obviously been broken, at least once. His black hair is unkempt, tight knots left unattended. His dark skin is periodically marred by various scars, a rather prominent one runs the length of his left jaw. Then something about this duergar instills a sense of foreboding. Perhaps it is the way in which he moves, a dangerous stride in his slow stalk. Or perhaps it is the gleam of violent competence in his crimson eyes. No matter its source, peril flows almost palpably from the very essence of this muscular menace. Shifting your gaze you also notice that.

Role

Physical awakening.

Dawn light flutters lightly through the confines of a thin filthy
alley. As the ambiance brightens slowly, a soft cacophony begins
to drift upon the sea driven breeze. A lump of shadows seems to
stir slightly, debris tumbling from this thing as it struggles to
stand. It brushes itself off, moving with slow curiosity, then
positions itself so that it might study the surroundings. As the
figure steps into the dawn light, the dark skin of a duergar is
suddenly evident. He looks about, mumbling to himself for a time,
then nods almost in resolute acceptance and moves off towards the
sounds of bustling activity.

Days of quiet theft, for one must eat and drink to survive, became
weeks of finding himself reading endlessly. The massive treasury
of paper and words within this desert city was open during all
hours of the day and night. This is how he found a place that was
his home for a time, as he tried to remember at least something
about who he was or where he came from. Alas, even the vast
collection of words could not bridge the gap of his current
situation and the mysteries of his past. The months were far from
lost though, as day after day was spent in the nearly abandoned
sections of the expansive library.

Mental awakening.

Here he learned so much, read at length of the history of Thera,
and of the very gods themselves. He learned of the dark arts, these
he would soon come to study himself, though he did not yet know it.
He realized his own name, or at least what he would call himself,
as it was branded upon the black skin of his chest. Khaahd Yahig
did not know what his name meant, but yet he somehow knew how to
read the words. Names of histories greatest and worst individuals.
How things were called, where they might be found, how to get to
different places and what you might find there. Time mattered little
to someone who didn't even know who he was, and so Khaahd's entire
existence was spent deep in endless study.

Being ejected from the library was overwhelming. The soldiers came
one day, covered in hide, heads wrapped with cloth so only the eyes
could be seen. He stumbled away from them, a mahogany tome clutched
behind his back. The soldiers stalked Khaahd, isle to isle, guiding
him like a dog until he stepped backwards out of the massive doors.
Stumbled down the steps, Khaahd clutched the dust covered Sacraa
to his chest as he fled into the streets of the desert city.

Spiritual awakening.

Crackling lightning faded into nothing as Khaahd's fist opened, his
arm drifting down to his side. The black charred corpse at his feet
still smoked, though there was no other movement around. This was
his first murder, his first kill. He had felt the delight rush of
adrenaline as he pit his skill against his foes, the price of their
gamble was life. Khaahd had come out of it victorious, and yet he
was not satisfied. Killing this fool, blind as the Sacraa referred
to him as, was ultimately beneficial, there could be no other way.
Perhaps it is because this one was hardly a true test of his will,
a wholly unsavory yet justified murder of one truly lacking. Yes,
he wished to truly test himself in the heat of battle, to feel the
thrill. Knowing the odds before him would heavily out favor even
survival, let alone victory. Knowing that the very essence of his
beliefs is what would drive him through, to savor that, to revel
in it. Turning away from the smoking corpse, Khaahd surveyed the
path before him. Rare was it that he weighed his choices so, as
Khaahd had always been one to act on his wishes, not what he
contemplated as correct. And thus it was only right that the path
he decided upon was the one that lead to the temple. Some might
think it too soon, but within brief memories of life that Khaahd
did have there was never any sort of hesitation. It was time truly
immerse himself within the precepts he had followed since he
learned of them. It was time to seek out the Father.

Truth.

The soft slow steady beat of rain filtered through the expanse
of the stone antechamber of this mausoleum. As darkness floods
the ancient chamber, a large skeletal figure raises its gaunt
bone hand. The twin points of burning light seem to flare from
the sockets of where his eyes once were. The hand lifts, as the
scented perfumes swirl and mix with those of the dark muscular
duergar standing before the lich. Grime, sweat, and blood mix
oddly with the incense and perfume giving the air a rather
sweet metallic odor. As the hand of bone reaches it's apex, the
ebony skin of the duergar's neck swirls and begins radiate with
a crimson glow. What could be interpreted as a wicked grin might
just then show upon the face of the lich god, or perhaps it was
a trick of the flittering light. The glow fades, and an
intricate ruby scarab stands out vividly upon the dark skin.
The study rubies upon the sword flicker in the faint light as the
lich god sinks into the cold stones of the mausoleum floor.

A glimpse.

The gnome scrambles backwards awkwardly, his hands grasping at the
leaf strewn woodland floor. His body is covered in a mixture of
fresh blood and dirt, the edges of his clothing tattered and burnt.
The thick trunk of an old oak tree stops his retreat and just then
the black head of a hammer arcs through the air to crush his skull.
No scream fills the air, only the sickening wet thump and a strange
sound. The sound is almost akin to a rising storm filling the sky
and yet at the same time it is smaller, more precise, as if the
fierce wind is being funneled through a hollow bamboo shoot. This
sound moves from the body of the gnome, through the head of the
black hammer and into the haft. Darkness seems to pulse from the
hammer as a wail flows forth into the deepest reaches of the forest.
Some force jolts the black skinned duergar holding the hammer,
almost knocking him from his very feet. As he stumbles backwards,
he falls to one knee, his eyes begin to glaze over. His head falls
to the side, sightless eyes peering into the night, staring at
nothing but perhaps seeing everything he could not see before. How
long this fleeting moment of enlightenment lasts, one can not say,
but it is over and the heavy set duergar slinks off into the night
in quiet contemplation of whatever glimpse of memory he was able
to garner from the essence of the gnome. More would perhaps make the
extraction of what he wanted some how viable.
