Description

Before you stands a female, fine featured, and with hair as black as the darkest hours in the middle of moonless night. She wears an easy smile and a certain mischief comes to her eyes even easier: Eyes that seem to take all in to account in some never ending calculation. Her garb is strange match of useful armament from around the lands, yet you just might be able to make out a belt beneath it all, strapped with a variety of daggers for every situation. She moves like a dancer, but you have the feeling it comes from the hard life of the streets.

Judge, Jury, and Executioner

They entered the city of Galadon from the west, having traveled the 
winding and crumbling road through the Weald.  Her mother, long frail 
from the conflict she had waged, was as beautiful as ever.  She and the 
girl wore the mundane cloaks to cover their obvious forest garb.  While 
adventurers were common in this city, her mother took no chances that 
they would be spotted.  Her mother was known, very known, and the guards 
would be on the lookout for one as wanted as she.  Not as hated as the 
reavers, even the sun branch was not spared much mercy.

But the mission was simple.   Scouting.  The tribunal presence was 
overwhelming the tree, the fetish gone, and her mother went in advance to 
find a window of opportunity to strike.  It was a mission simple enough 
that her daughter Kii could come along.   It was better she fell out of 
the nest now, sooner than later.

The day should have been gorgeous, as it was in their travel from the 
weald.  But Galadon for all its mixtures of strange and exotic travelers, 
somehow destroyed the pristine beauty of the day.  It was a mixture of 
smells that while in some ways foreign and exciting, mixed in the 
obviously unpleasant and better off not known.  The queasiness that came 
with it, would be forever tied to Galadon for Kii.

Traveling quickly past the magic shops and between the always busy baker 
and butcher, they arrived in the confusing and highly trafficked market 
square.  Waiting as was the plan, Kii pulled out and began eating an 
apple that they found on the way to the city.  Her mother motioned her to 
wait.  Kii nodded as her mother ran north through the market.  

A seagull cried.  It seemed like the crowd parted and suddenly there was 
a mage where nothing existed before.  Before Kii could shout a warning, 
her mother, spinning suddenly in panic, came to an unnatural halt as if 
neurologically frozen.  Everything seemed to happen in slow motion, her 
mother's eyes seeking out her daughter's in desperation. The combination 
of sadness and realization in those eyes was profound.  The mage 
continued to lay out a long incantation as the guards swung their weapon 
in vicious chops:  hacking, horrible chops.  Lifeless eyes stared back at 
her.  Kii screamed. 

An apple dropped.  Maybe Kii thought, that apple was hers.  Why couldn't 
she breathe.  She backed away from her mother's judge and executioner, 
completely unnoticed.  She turned, scrambling to run to the forest, but 
could not comprehend doing so alone without her mother.  Instead, she 
turned to the dark alleys of the streets and embraced for a time the 
queasiness: that horrible feeling, but only feeling, that reminded her 
she was still alive.

An Abandoned House

Among the dark alleys of Galadon, above an abandoned house, sat a dark 
and smoky attic.  It was in that attic that a still young girl, so very 
far removed from a childhood of the forests ran tasks for her master.  A 
crotchety old man as gnarled as an old tree root, he was foul of mood and 
temper.  Old Borl's was so different than the lavish thieves guild of 
Galadon who sought only the accumulation of massive amounts of gold.  The 
old bounty hunter dealt in the trafficking of people and information, a 
far greater commodity leading to far greater riches for those who knew 
its value.  The tasks Kii performed were easily worth the lucrative 
insights into the workings of Old Borl's bounty office, one task of which 
she ran late to finish even now.

She was met with a vicious backhand that sent her sprawling.  "You're 
late!  And donna be given me any of your cunnin pork pies wretched 
girl!", snarled Old Borl.  Kii shook her head to restore her vision, then 
quickly handed Old Borl the findings from the scouting.  Knowing it had 
nothing to do with her, but knowing the results would be the same she 
stated simply, "Brown Bread. The marks Brown Bread."  Old Borl looked up 
at her in shock, "Dead?"

"Like I said.  Brown Bread.  Dead." she stated in exasperation, too late 
realizing her mistake.  The next blow nearly put her to sleep for some 
time, but she resisted, and for it two more blows followed.  "Wretched 
girl, be prattlin at me in the tone and think I won't beat you good?  Not 
half!  You'll be learning for me some respect, like or not!"  Suddenly as 
was the way of his violent mood swings, Old Borl suddenly calmed and 
smiled. 

"Poor, poor girl.  Be scare'n and surprise'n Old Borl.  That you did and 
all.  Now you be getting some sleep and all."  His mince pies stared at 
her with what he probably thought was concern, but Kii only saw the 
bloodshot orbs as part of some grotesque monster she had to survive.  
Sliding a bowl of nasty gruel across the table, Kii caught it as it 
splashed onto her.  Stomach roiling, she vowed in that moment that 
someday she would never want for gold and forever put this out of her 
mind.  Taking the slop and backing into a corner, she crouched and ate, 
knowing it would all be worth it some day.  Some day.

An Unexpected Visitor

Shouting. She recognized a panicked voice beyond the curtains of her 
sleeping corner as that of Old Borl. 

"Cor Blimey! But its not bein fair! Im a wantin my bees and honey worth 
if you will be takin her!" Old Borl was shouting savagely like a badger 
in a corner. Kii opened the curtain to see him backed against the wall 
with spittle flying from his mouth in rage." The man in front of him was 
calm and that seemed to make him even more powerful. He spoke as if he 
was use to commanding and others listening. "The girl will come. She will 
be taught how to rise among civilization, instead of living on the scraps
from it's table." The man turned to her. In those eyes she was reminded 
of the same eyes staring back at her and her mother a long time ago, a 
visit in a meadow. He looked at her now with the same fondness as he had 
shown them then. She did not understand who or what place he had in her 
life.

In Old Borl's way, he entered into a rampage which unfortunately for him 
was not so incoherent, "You Imperial pigs are bein the same! Demandin 
your coins for nothin! Nothin! What about you scum, you of the Pig Sect? 
Yes, you must bein the Pig Sect Leader! I bet you are! Probably have to 
be stuffin' the faces of your centurions instead of paying em!"

The man slammed Old Borl against the wall with such force that Kii swore 
he broke. As he hung there, cunning Old Borl squeaked, "Im..perr 
eyaa..llaaw!" The fist relaxed slightly, "Imperial Law!"  blabbered Old 
Borl over and over. The visitor let out something between a grunt and a 
sigh, "Imperial Law.  Yes, I suppose you are right." Turning to her then, 
the visitor said, "Come Kii, it is time to go to your new home."

So many lost hopes and dreams were suddenly realized by Kii. She looked 
up at the strange visitor whose eyes she fondly remembered when he gave 
out a cry that seemed more annoyance than pain. Reaching back across his 
right shoulder, his fingers returned with the smallest speckle of blood. 
Without even blinking, he drew his sword and in the same motion continued 
the move straight into the gut of Old Borl. Old Borl collapsed to the 
ground like some sort of macabre and worn out child's toy, a tiny and 
dripping knife falling out of his lifeless hands.  The visitor then 
looked at her with a chuckle that contained in it such a warmth that had 
never been a part of Kii's life. Suddenly his smile faded. Alarm reached 
his eyes which darted back to the tiny dripping dagger at Old Borl's 
side. He sprung into action, hands desperately grabbing for his girdle of 
many pouches. It was as if the graceful man of so much power had lost the 
ability to perform the simplest of movements. Kii could only watch as he 
sank to the floor between her and Old Borl.  She sank to her knees, 
staring. The room was cold, devoid of the warmth and fondness she had 
known only too briefly.

A Cube of Balance

Light and Dark. Chaos and Order. Magic and Veil.

Perfect balance being the absolute center, any of these pushed to the 
farthest extremes: these points make up the cube of all possibilities for 
balance.  This cube is our world.  This Cube of Balance is how I see it 
all.

Yet what a paradox we run, as we play an extremely important part in it.  
From my youngest days in my interview with Solec, it was stressed that 
all seekers and keepers must strive to be fully balanced in their own 
lives.  

Yet mistakes, the first one careless, the latter one a misjudgment have 
brought reflection. Fighting an elven mage very young...when I watched only 
of chaos, order, light, and darkness while the magic was weak was the 
first.  More recently in life, I gauged the balance as light being in 
power, then attacked a great power of the fortress, the Captain Eachelinn 
while magic was also weak.  In the first, all common sense should have 
reminded me to watch balance of the veil at all times and the simple 
affect even a young uncabled mage not barely able to icicle could have on 
it.

The later lesson in life is a bit more complicated.  The captain of the 
fortress is a powerful force for light.  Yet the wisdom of the heavens 
told me that a mage should rarely ever be attacked accept in the greatest 
of needs for the balance.  It is a reminder that while I am a girl of the 
streets and thugs, we are founded as an isle of magical research as much 
as we are balance with a history that goes back ages.  Like it or 
not...there is no ancient Masters of the Five to fill the magical faction 
of this world.  The scions aims are so skewed as to be something other 
than simply magic.  That leaves us, the isle, as the force that is most 
dominating the magical side of the cube of balance.

That means while we can be centered amidst darkness and light, chaos and 
order, we are never truly removed from the force of magic.  That is who 
we are.  No, instead we knowingly accept this is one thing me must be...and 
have the temperance to pull ourselves back and restrain our actions when 
we too greatly offset the non-magical aspects of our world.  This is what 
the Masters could not do, this is what the Scion will not do.  This is 
why we are different.

Balancers of a cube.  Seeking its center in all the world, even as we 
ourselves sit apart from the perfect center of it all.

The Missing Dimension

Back and forth. Light and Darkness. Chaos and Order. Veil and Magic.

In rare moments where it is completely balanced, I prepare and gather 
respite. For we watch and wait, ready to keep the balance when it shifts.

This routine repeated again and again eventually will generate a question 
that all the eldest of the isle come to consider:  How does our daily 
maintenance of the balance play into the big picture?

When I came to the isle I was highly critical of Solec, yet oh how my 
respect only grew.  I believe Solec as wise and experienced as they come. 
Yet even so, one of my fledgling and very young observations I still 
think was true.  Solec did not treat the light with the same bias as he 
treated the darkness.  He would have no problem stepping off the isle's 
shores to go hunt down evil when darkness tipped, but privy was I to many 
a warm conversation while those of the light would even visit the isle 
and fear not that Solec would act against them.

Through my middle years the affects of this legacy and bias that many of 
the Nexuns showed towards the fortress became evident.  The inns and 
taverns would scream of the swarms of light that walked the land, 
stalking evil in mobs, and how the wicked had no chance.  I was far from 
a heroine of the isle at the time and I often wondered: Had just one or 
two nexuns truly restrained the light as they did the darkness and 
village, how many chances would that have given for the dark souls to 
muster their strength, train, play their part in the balance?

In was with this a realization developed.  While we can and must maintain 
the balance daily, there is something bigger, a larger and far reaching 
balance, that goes beyond even the moment's  pendulum swings.  While I 
believe in my youngest days when I came to the isle that many Nexuns were 
guilty of a bias towards the light that fostered swarms of the 
Fortress....is not the alternative true?

What about those like myself that are so on task about jumping on the 
tide as it turns?  If one faction was to receive the brunt of my 
dispatching...say the few orcs, few scion, or few tribunal....repeatedly 
because of small but repeated balance swings, what would the affects be?  
Surely wiping them out might serve the balance of the day, but what would 
the long reaching impact be?  A huge period where they can barely get 
their feet off the ground?

How interesting that in many ways we as nexuns forgo our long term goals. 
Outlanders seek Thar-Aris, Fortress Evil's Obliteration, Villagers 
Magic's, Empire their Reign, and on the list goes.  We look at the daily 
balance and make small adjustments.  But what do we seek long term other 
than to prepare and wait...to again adjust the balance.  Should we not be 
seeking to understand the implications that go beyond the moment?  Yet 
how does one do so without bias...that is the priceless question.
