Description
A towering behemoth stands nearby. He stands at least 16' tall,
slightly above average for his kind. He's clad in blackened armor
which is trimmed with silver and gold streaks along the edges.
His skin is an odd reddish color in most places, with an unusual
hint of copper peeking through here and there, usually in places
that are not often exposed, like the palms of his hands and behind
his ears. His face looks as though it were carved from solid granite,
all planes and sharp angles. A brand is on his forehead, but it's
difficult to make out because it looks to have been vigorously
scrubbed with some kind of rough object, scabbing slightly and even
bleeding a little. Knowing eyes of green set upon you with their
piercing gaze. His green hair is closely cut and barely visible
around the edges of his battle helm.
Role
The Barbarians of the Blackflame
Added Sat Feb 11 06:42:23 2017 at level 26:
Kotu Blackflame was born to a tribe of fire giants on a volcano in the
far southern continent. Unlike the fireborn of Kiadana Rah and other
mounts in the mainlands the Blackflame Clan was extremely primitive.
Their name came from a chemical reaction deep within the bowels of the
volcano which gave the flames a black color. To the simple fireborn this
was a sign from the Gods of Fire. They guarded the cave and assigned a
name to the Black Fire God: Kotuguntah.
Much like their more civilized brethren the Blackflames adhered to the
instinctive governing principle of The One Law. The Law, much like the
Fireborn themselves, is as simple as it is brutal. It dictates that only
the strong rule and the weak serve. In the case of the servants of Kotu-
guntah that was altered to: The strong rule and the weak are eaten.
The practice of cannibalism is not unique to the Blackflames in the fire-
born society but it is certainly more prominent. The rough surroundings
of their volcanic homeland meant a lack of of food and conquest for meat
was an easy solution for all. This gave the Blackflames a terrible
reputation in the South and they were feared in large part because of this
barbaric ritual consumption of flesh.
At the dawn of the present age there was born a Blackflame named Kotu.
This was in homage of Kotuguntah and a common practice for those of the clan
who prove themselves. You see, for the Blackflames young are not named at
birth. They earn their name through raiding and conquest. Those who do not
"earn" their name are often culled and eaten by the stronger warriors of
the tribe. One Law, indeed.
Kotu earned his name by wielding an axe and chopping down an entire pack of
lumberjacks who ventured a bit too far from the beaten path in search of
new timberlands. Kotu then killed and injured some of his own brethren as
they attempted to partake in the meal of the defeated. "Kotu kill. Kotu eat."
The Black Flame of Anger
Added Sat Feb 11 06:42:51 2017 at level 26:
Kotu's reign of terror was just beginning. Born under the governance of the
stars of Anger Kotu was a testament to the chaotic strength of the sphere.
He was soon isolated from the rest of the tribe as they were afraid of the
Giant's brutality and willingness to resort to violence over the most trivial
of matters. Despite this Kotu was the first they would ask when time for a
raid upon the Southern lands. He was the ideal manifestation of the One Law.
He was also bored.
With each raid Kotu would venture further and further and take longer and longer
to return to the Mount of the Black Flame. Then one day he just didn't return.
The Blackflames themselves made many urban legends about this disappeareance.
While some theorized that the giant had died other's told tales of Kotu rampaging
further and further north. They were correct.
Kotu found his way to Arkham and watched from the woods at the vibrant civilization
of the mainlands. He didn't understand it and he was as startled by it as he was
intrigued. As he did his best to fit in he witnessed a raid by the Outlanders who
came in, lit the streets aflame and then butchered two guards before rushing back
to the North. Kotu lumbered after them and watched as they disappeared into a bush
following the lead of two wolves who seemed to greet the Reavers as kin. From that
moment on Kotu knew he would be an Outlander himself and raid with the great warriors
of the woods. He pledged himself to the Huntress and swore allegiance to Thar-Eris.
This pledge would not last long.
The Fires of Change
Added Sat Feb 11 06:47:07 2017 at level 26:
As he waited to speak with the Nightreaver the young Kotu continued to observe from
afar. He soon realized that the Outlanders were more than just the hunters he saw before.
They were an eclectic mix of brutal reavers, aloof woodsmen and worst yet: tree hugging
Lightwalkers. He noticed how the weak Fortress slaves were always lurking about and how
eagerly the Refuge worked with them. He noticed that the BattleRager's, whose flesh should
be consumed for it's power, were often included in this Pan-Theran Alliance. Even the
Entropy mages, whose cabal was founded in this age by Demons, were allowed to join in the
raids. This stoked the fires of Anger in the soul of Kotu. It was not worthy of Kotuguntah,
nor was it worthy of Kotu.
He broke his pledge to the Huntress and decided to hunt alone. During which time he first
noticed the mighty soldiers of the Empire. Their raids were consistent and strong with great
spoils and glory. He was approached by a Drow Blade who offered him the oath. Kotu shrugged,
"Yeah, good." And with that he swore his life over again, this time to the Blade Sect.
You see, an oath to Kotu means nothing. Only the One Law matters and so long as the One Law
dictates that the Empire is strong then Kotu will swing his axe for them. Should they prove
themselves as weak he will butcher them just as quickly and without remorse.
Now an Imperial, Kotu hasn't changed much. His new Orderly ethos is brittle at times. He
refuses to give up the cannibalistic tendencies of his past as he still believes that by
consuming the flesh of his enemies he also consumes their power. He has no care for politics
nor conventional definitions of power. All he desires is to be feared. All he longs for is
to see the Black Flame spread and burn the mainlands.
Soon all will know of Kotu and his God.
