Description
This stout Felar appears to be well past his prime. His portly build is
accentuated rather than masked by a glorious coat of spotted white, and the
impression is further enhanced by his wide paws and a thickly-furred tail.
His short, slightly rounded ears seem alert, though, and his icy blue eyes
are ever so attentive as he looks for something to entertain himself with.
He wears expensive but grossly mismatching garb that looks like it's been
picked with absolutely no regard for color. A wizard's robe and an array of
wands suggests an involvement with arcane circles, but he also carries the
paraphernalia of many other trades, some of it rather kinky-looking. A bit
apish in overall appearance and antics, he has an almost unnatural vigor
about him, unnerving to see in one of his age and physique. Equally puzzling
is his attitude and posture, silly and then serious in a blink of an eye.
Role
Background
Added Mon Mar 30 04:47:29 2015 at level 6:
Kowelu is a wild magic talent born among Felar of the frozen wastes, land
where survival is often the only concern. He considers his homeland a sad
and undeserving place, and his early years the most dim. He always savored
what few pleasures he could get - whether by simple wit or brawn, or through
the use of his yet poorly-understood arcane abilities.
As a result of his childhood time, his personality has a strong hedonistic
bent. When he finally ventured away from his home and into the big world,
he has chosen to study in the guild of Shapeshifters because he thinks that
being able to become various creatures will enhance his worldly experiences
and allow him to feel the kinds of pleasure that others cannot - plus he is
fond of being able to maintain his own appearance to his wishes.
He is chummy and easy to befriend, but also gets excited over any thrills
(note Rushing Adrenaline flaw) and never lets conscience stand in the way.
A major point in his philosophy is that Felar are not created by Gods, and
as such, there is no reward and no punishment for them in the afterlife. As
a true hedonist, however, he can acknowledge the pleasure of altruism, but
is fickle and whimsical about it at best, and blatantly mocking at worst.
His other quirk is complete color-blindness - perhaps due to an odd genetic
flaw, not even shapeshifting can rid him of this disability. He will mostly
refer to items in shades of gray, though he can make educated guesses.
Advancement
Added Mon Apr 6 10:59:52 2015 at level 28:
Kowelu's skill at storytelling comes from his early vagabond years after he
left his home. Since then he expanded his knowledge in Thera's libraries,
and gained acceptance as a Herald tale-teller.
Not everyone knew he was also fond of taking on the form of a huge mastiff
and venturing out at night to tear up random strangers. He doesn't care much
to hide it, though, and maintains he "never killed anyone important anyway".
(aggressive to a degree, plenty of fights at low ranks but no PC kills)
Since he joined the Heralds, he was also able to expand his magical powers.
His double choice of utility focus is based on the fact that its forms
provide the most variety in abilities. Offense and especially defense would
be too single-minded for his taste.
With age also comes something new to him: ambition, both as a Herald and as
an adventurer. He's especially impatient to learn all of "his little zoo",
so that he can show his teeth to the world.
Note on Achromatopsia
Added Tue Apr 14 13:39:01 2015 at level 48:
Kowelu's color-blindness is not intended to be a major gameplay restriction.
He supposedly has the sense to label his preps in a way that he could tell
them apart - and having a keen nose also helps. Instead it is an RP device:
his inability to know something that most take for granted creates for him
one more "need" that drives him to seek more and more exotic experiences.
It is likely a neural or mental condition as it's unhelped by shapeshifting.
It also leads to the fact Kowelu has very little fashion sense, his clothing
occasionally displaying a glaring mismatch in colors.
Opulence
Added Tue Apr 14 13:40:49 2015 at level 48:
Close to the top rank in his guild, Kowelu still wants more. But even though
he loves all the treasure, power and infamy that he can get, to him they are
only a means to get where he has not been and taste what he has not tasted.
Thus he spends and gives away as easily as he gains. No riches can be taken
beyond the grave anyway, and generosity yields favors owed to him by many.
He does not strive to befriend the whole world, however. He has recently
developed a strict dislike for all things Imperial. Empire's treatment of
the Arcane is intolerable, and he especially despises the magi who willingly
submit to such regime. Obviously, Fortress and Battle are his enemies too.
Kowelu still values his position as a Herald. In fact, he sees himself as
the most prominent Herald in the realms, and it sometimes lessens the need
to reassert himself through violence. Of course, there's still pleasure to
be gained from bloodshed, but it is now a form of art to him, that must be
done with quality and flair. Because he associates the Cabal with himself,
he does care about it and wants to bring it to new heights.
Politics
Added Sun Apr 19 03:57:10 2015 at level 51:
Kowelu and Empire have an interesting relationship now. Some angry bouts and
a lot of skulking with taking pot-shots at Imperials have taught him how war
puts a serious dent in his quality of life. Lone Imperials are few and far
between. Fessara hides. Much waiting, much caution. Boredom.
He's not afraid of Imperial wrath, but it threatens his ambition of becoming
High Herald... that would add the need to protect the Inn, not just himself,
and the constant siege would be extremely bad for business.
But ultimately it wasn't the threats that were convincing, but promises.
Hopefully, coming into agreement with Sindrir didn't just ruin Kowelu's life
into complete boredom for lack of enemies. Not that it's going to stop him
from murdering some hapless imperial if he thinks he can do it, do it with
style and get away with it. He's got gold for bribes, too.
What it all evolved into
Added Sat May 16 23:53:24 2015 at level 51:
Today, the state of Kowelu's relations is a pleasant chaos. He moved from
considering Cabals to considering individual people. Stick and carrot only
gets you so far with him as he appreciates benefits yet hates obligations.
He understands when it's better to step back, and shows no shame or honor,
but will eventually try to get even with anyone he considers a "bully".
Charismatic approach, and willingness to accept him as a wildcard, however,
reveals his friendlier side, that's why he stays on good terms with many
bards, including Kregan and Talisin despite occasionally finding them on the
other side of a fight. Also, anyone who appreciates a good story from him
will cater to his ego and thus provoke a nonviolent response.
In Herald matters, he is ill-suited for some of the arts (such as painting),
but has instead chosen to promote the knowledge-spreading aspect of the Inn.
In part this is due to Ballard's influence, and in part due to the fact that
digging up and sharing knowledge ties in with storytelling quite well.
Kindling Thera
Added Wed Jun 17 08:29:08 2015 at level 51:
They say some men just want to watch the world burn.
Kowelu is no better. But he wants it to burn *brightly*. In addition to
getting personal with his orangutan fists, he loves encouraging people to
fight other people. Without staying too long on any side, he has done it for
years now, and if there's one force (other than Heralds) that he favors more
often, it's the Grinning Skull Clan. Unsubtly trying to foster their growth
is his yet another attempt at setting Thera up for more carnage.
Doing things properly will require time, though, and he would like to see
the fruits of these beginnings. He pondered ways of extending his life...
Artifacts that make him younger may fail as their effect is not felt while
in form, and he is reluctant in pursuing undeath, with its bleakness and
lack of carnal pleasures. However, there's a particular kind of undead that
retains the taste of all seven mortal sins. Vampires.
He ponders what would he be willing to commit in order to become one...
Finale, part 1
Added Sat Aug 22 10:07:08 2015 at level 51:
A storyteller, Kowelu has always been good with lies. It takes suaveness
paired with intimidation to murder people and still stay on their faction's
good side. Imperials, as he heard, used to argue whether he must be hunted,
yet there were some who admired him enough for debates to remain debates.
Or perhaps they didn't want to worry about him, much as he didn't want to
worry about a major power going after him. It was politics, and it was fine.
He knew what to say to entertain an adventurer of almost any affiliation,
and how to balance between opposing factions. Much needed for a Herald,
it would've been impossible in a perfect world, but people will let a lot
slide when it suits them. Save perhaps for the most virtuous (Fortress) or
single-minded (Battle), but those he felt he could deal with physically.
As mentioned before, he was dreaming of becoming a vampire, so he could
be immortal while still being able to savor the finest points of life.
But as he has found, there are far more caveats than many mortals think.
That Sanadaren guy? He lies. Even if a true vampire did choose to make you
a member of his retinue, instead of simply feeding on your lifeforce, you
still end up enslaved with your acquired "immortality", your will forever
subjected to your new master. However... there is a legend about how true
vampires themselves appeared. According to it, their curse is linked to
betrayal, laid down by the dark gods on those of deeply treacherous spirit.
And there is a way to make an offering to attain such...
Finale, part 2
Added Sat Aug 22 10:09:41 2015 at level 51:
In the dull of night by a lone candle, upstairs in a room next to the attic,
a Felar sits at a desk, trusting his thoughts to paper:
"I have tried this idea on myself as a dancer tries on a new outfit. I have
researched this most thoroughly. The ritual would be simple enough, a blood
sacrifice made of someone dear to me. And there's only one such person.
...We met here in the Inn. I was young, she probably even younger by her
people's standards. She was wary of me, but found we had things in common.
I'm sure she found me scary, and I reveled in that. Toying with another's
mind, a deal sweeter than the primal joy of hunt.
Little things added up to create a bond. We both had sight related trouble.
We both cared for the Inn's future. We knew how to have a good time telling
a story, and we both had keen interest in the happenings of the world. She
always looked past our differences, and I repaid with the same.
I should've been jealous, but I accepted her as High Herald."
He stares at the text and at his own ink-stained paw, and in the moonlight
it seems like blood. After a long pause, he picks the sheet and sets it on
fire on the candle, staring at it silently till the flame almost burns him.
Dusting off the ashes, he grabs a new sheet, writing down another line:
"Sometimes, a man has to make a stand. Sometimes, it kills him."
