Description
Before you is a dark skinned duergar by the name of Krularn. No
surface-dweller would find this fellow attractive, but he would probably be
considered a handsome man in the eyes of his duergar kin. He is well dressed
in clothing that is mostly mismatched, and his greasy beard is thick and well
trimmed. He is lean, yet well muscled, and he carries himself in a way that
makes him appear taller than his four and a half feet. His scarred fingers
are thick, but surprisingly nimble, and his deep-set beady black eyes dart
around his surroundings with a feverish paranoia that seem to miss nothing.
Role
The Recruiter

The Imperial recruiter, Markaan, shifted nervously on his feet and wiped
his sweaty palms on his tidy uniform. He'd been on recruitments like
these dozens of times before, but facing the duergar in their strongholds
always made him uneasy. He always preferred his recruitment missions to
the drow a bit more to his liking, even though he knew the drow were just
as murderous and deceitful as the duergar, their refinement and class
made him feel more at home. But now he was faced with hundreds of pairs
of skeptical and grim eyes.
He gathered up his courage and made the speech he'd made countless times
before. It was an impassioned speech, one that he was proud of, and one
that rivaled that of the most dramatic bards in Thera. It was designed
to play upon the desires and fears of the commonfolk so that they'd
pledge their hearts and souls to the Empire. When he was through he was
pleased to see a score of hearty and strong looking duergar who appeared
eager to take the bloodoath to the Empire, and one by one they came
before him while he administered their oath.
Markaan breathed a sigh of relief. The warmaster would be pleased, as
his main goal for entering this vile duergar stronghold was to swell the
ranks of blade sect. The warmaster was fond of duergar blades, thinking
their dim minds and strong bodies molded them into the finest soldiers
under his command. Markaan smiled half-heartedly when he remembered that
he got a small bonus to his purse whenever he brought in duergar and fire
giants, but he had to wonder if it was worth all of the vileness that he
had to put himself through. He still wasn't entirely sure what kind of
"meat" was in the stew that was served to him when he arrived.
Markaan started packing up his things, and whislted idly while thinking
about which whores in Seantryn Modan he'd visit with his recruitment
bonus. Just as he finished he noticed a young duergar staring at him
from the shadows.
The Recruiter part 2

The young duergar approached the recruiter cautiously, his eyes scanning
his surroundings to see if he was being watched, and said, "It all be
true? Everythin' you be sayin' in your speech? I be gettin' riches n'
glory beyond me wildest imaginations if I be takin' the bloodoath?"
Markaan smiled thinly, he almost felt sorry for the young duergar who's
beard had just started to thicken and cover his face. He knew that most
imperials never reached that often promised goal of riches and glory, and
most of them died penniless and lame after years of servitude to the
Empire. Unless, of course, they were one of the thousands who died upon
the spears and blades of the Maran and wildlings. He was never certain
who had the luckier fate, but he turned to the duergar and smiled his
biggest charlatan smile and lied, "Of course it's true! Why just the
other day I saw one of last year's recruits dressed in robes of gold
while being served the finest mutton by a dozen beautiful serving girls!"
Krularn stood before the recruiter examining the shiny copper piece in
his dark fingers. He smiled as he looked up at the recruiter, "A whole
copper! Wow! I be grateful!"
Markaan coughed loudly to prevent the laughter that wanted to escape his
lips, then silently nodded at the duergar and made his way to the
entrance of the stronghold. He approached the front gates and was
confronted by two heavy and muscular guards. One held out a black hand
and grunted something about and exit fee. For a brief moment Markaan
wanted to argue, but then decided he'd probably get on his way faster and
out of this accursed duergar stronghold if he simply parted with a silver
coin.
He reached down to his waist to pinch a silver coin from his purse, but
to his shock he realized his purse was gone! Markaan quickly realized
that it was probably Krularn, and he stormed back to the cavern where he
had met the little whelp.
The Recruiter part 3

"Blackfinger!" He bellowed when he reached his destination, and he
unsheathed a menacing looking blade. Markaan advanced on the young
duergar, his face a crimson red of rage. However, just when it seemed
Krularn would fall to the blade of the angry recruiter, a lithe figure
dressed in solid black stepped in front of Markaan.
"This one is mine, Markaan," the figure said cooly in a soft feminine
voice.
Markaan blustered, angry that someone would impede him from his prey.
Even more puzzling was seeing a human female in this duergar land. He
was about to backhand the woman for her interference, but then he noticed
the tiny black symbol of the codex on her black learther jerkin.
Markaan's face went pale and he started gibbering incoherently. The
woman was a Shade of the Empire.
"I'm glad you've come to your senses, Markaan," the woman said
delicately. "What you have refused," she said while nodding her head
towards Krularn,"the shadow will accept. He is ours now. We will train
him to be the eyes, ears, and teeth of the Empire!" She said the word
teeth while thumbing the tip of a very sharp dirk.
"But...but....he stole from me!" Markaan blubbered. "You cannot take
from another Imperial!"
"I saw nothing, heard nothing, and nothing was said," the Shade said
smugly, "Therefore I see no reason for punishing this young lad."
Markaan snarled, "The War Master will hear of this treason!"
"Oh will he?" the Shade said softly.
And with that, the Shade motioned to Krularn, and lead him from the
duergar stronghold so that he might learn to be a proper shadow. She
sensed he would be, he was fillled with promise, but he was still very
raw.
"This way, Krularn," she said and lead him to a secret passage that he
did not know existed, and they left behind his homeland, and a recruiter.
A recruiter who was now facedown in a cavern with a slashed throat with
no one to speak of his demise.
