Description
A squat, broad-shouldered duergar stands cloaked in shadow. His bald skull
gleams faintly in the dim light while a thick blackened beard hangs down like
a curtain of soot over his chest. Jagged scars crisscross his ebony skin,
each line etched and burned with molten gold so they shimmer like hateful
runes whenever he moves. His eyes burn a deep, greedy red, hard and cruel,
they appear to weigh the worth of those before him.
Around his thick neck hangs a massive chain of gold medallions, and his belt
jingles with looted coins hammered into crude plates. A ragged fur-lined
cloak hangs from his shoulder, its trim sewn with various looted valuables.
As you take one last look at this at this menacing figure you notice that...

The Gold Beneath - Chapter 1

The distant echo of hammers and pickaxes rang out deep beneath the mountain of
Motrorn as Krulndrak's clan made their way through the tunnels. A faint
flicker of light could be seen from a fork in one of the tunnels before
Krulndrak, likely the flames of a small cooking fire. It was within these damp
and shadowed halls he had known as home for some 30 years, a very young age in
terms of their lifespan. Krulndak's clan was known as the Vir'koth, and his
father Klarn was a warpriest and head of a raiding party. Tasked by Ghaelek
the Duergar King himself to plunder the riches under the mount, Krulndak's
clan was feared for their tenacity and unforgiving thirst for war.
There was no moon within the tunnels to tell time but magical runes lined the
hearth of Krulndrak's home that revealed time's passing. It was the Day of
Deception in the Month of Battle, the day Klarn had selected for clan Vir'koth
to finish the vast tunnels from Mortorn to the city of Akan. In the previous
months Klarn had been order to undertake this new push to expand the the
duergars boarders and to find new treasures. For many days they had tunneled
in silence, breaking through granite and stone. It was rumored there was a
castle within the nearby surface city of Akan that castle housed vast amounts
of gold and other plunder. The plan was straightforward, expand the tunnels
underneath the castle, probe for weaknesses in the foundation and break
through plundering and murdering all who would stand in the way.
What happened next would change the course of Krulndrak's life forever,
warping his grasp of reality and shaping his world views. You see, not known
to Klarn and clan Vir'koth, Akan's castle had mystical stones throughout its
halls, these stones finely attuned to the earth and vibrations. It was long
known to the dwarves of Akan that terrors such as the drow and duergar existed
beneath the earth and these protections though not activated in centuries were
a necessity to safety and security. Days before clan Vir'koth were silently
(or so they thought) preparing to enter the halls of Akan, they were walking
into a trap. A very cleverly laid trap.
The Gold Beneath - Chapter 1 (Cont)

Klarn began his dark prayers, Klrundrak watching several rows behind the first
lines of raiding duergar, their eyes red with bloodlust and their hearts
filled with greed. The war party was about to finish breaking through a shaft
cut directly into what looked like a vast hall. As the wall crumbled and
spilled into the floors of the large hall it was eerily quiet. Food had was
still on tables, wine still in goblets but no one to be seen. It was good the
duergar thought, the element of surprise looked to be had. As the war party
quickly poured into the feasting halls a bright flash of light lit the room
blinding the sensitive eyes of the duergar and the ground began to shake.
"Earth magic!" shouted one of duergar captains, but it was too late.
As the floors shook beneath the boots of the duergar, Krulndrak looked back at
the now collapsed shaft. There was no escape. Battle cries rang out as a
horde of dwarves flooded the room surrounding the duergar war party, now
engaged in combat. The cold cry of steel against steel rang out in the once
quiet air, it was like a merciless but beautiful song. Clan Vir'koth held true
to its name, fighting to till the last of the lines of duergar were left
standing. Klarn stood before Krulndrak uttering a prayer to seal one of his
wounds as he fought with this last breath. Kruldnrak heard a loud crunch, he
raised his head and saw his father had been brutally impaled by a dwarven
spear. As he choked on his own blood he managed to utter his last words to
Krulndrak "Make the stone bleed gold boy".
Imprisonment and Escape - Chapter 2

Krulndrak clutched his chest as the door of his cell was slammed shut. He had
suffered a broken rib and was one of only a handful of prisoners that remained
alive from the raiding party, all of whom were beaten and broken. Few know the
cruelty of dwarven prisons, the silence alone combined with the constant sound
of dripping water is enough to drive a ordinary creature mad. Over time his
kin fell to illness or exhaustion and only Krulndrak and some prisoners of
unrecognizable origins remained.
Endless hours passed, days became nights, nights became days. Each day
Krulndrak suffered the same routine, wake in the morning to a cold bucket of
piss or water being tossed on him, then to the mines across from the city for
a grueling days worth of labor and then after the guards were done cutting him
or beating him, he faced the worst punishment of all. Krulndrak was made to
polish the very gold he was meant to plunder, everyday. The coins, the gold
bars the many ornate fixtures in the treasure room all he was to clean and
polish before he would be tossed back in his cell with a moldy piece of bread
or a rotten mushroom to sustain himself.
Krulndrak grew to hate the dwarves not just as the enemies or adversaries he
once had heard of but everything about them. Their speech, a broken and
guttural dialect, and yes he too realized that even his own kin had adopted a
form of this speech but he vowed in that prison cell that he would rise above
this foolish sounding dribble if he was ever able to escape. He was going to
make them pay for everything, there would be no end to the war he would bring
to the lands to satiate his lust for gold. No mountain deep enough nor high
enough, ALL would be his to plunder if he could just rid himself of these
captors. The mockery....to make him polish and clean that which he coveted
most, that which his kin had died for.
Ten years passed, Krulndrak now in his fortieth birthyear began to realize
that no one was going to be able to help him escape this hell but his own wit.
And so an idea began to form. Krulndrak had survived off the rotting scraps of
the castle for years and he had come to know the various affects the fungi and
mushrooms had at various stages of ripeness and rot. He had watched other
prisoners fall deathly ill eating those mushrooms and some seem to even
collapse into a death like slumber. One chance evening in the dead of winter
Krulndrak decided it was time to escape, he had saved some black "deathcaps"
as they were called - he would eat them and through his deathlike slumber
perhaps the guards would think him deceased and discard his corpse in the
rubbish shaft of the mine.
Imprisonment and Escape - Chapter 2 (Cont)

"Got a' ripin er' watch commanda" one guard said to his superior as he kicked
Krulndrak's would be "corpse". "Ah its cold' es all ell' outside, let's dump
em' in tha pit" the conversation was audible to Krulndrak but he lay unable to
move or act. The dwarven guards proceeded to carry his lifeless body to
rubbish shaft and toss him in. Krulndrak felt the cool air of the shaft and
sound of rushing air fill his ears, as he snapped too mid flight...he realized
he was falling down a hole, it was pitch-black when he came to and then all of
sudden...THUD.
Krulndrak had landed in an awful smelling refuse of lord knows what. It was
terrible, it was disgusting but he knew he had to gather ever fiber his being
to pull himself together. He uttered a small prayer and a faint glow came
emitted from his chest. His wounds slightly healed just a tiny bit, his eyes
adjusted to the light in the shaft and he saw that he could climb out.
For what seemed like an eternity he climbed, he was very familiar with the
layout of the mine and so it being at night and in the middle of winter he was
able to find himself out of the mine without much rsistance and to the
crossroads near the city Akan. He could see lights below the mountains to the
west and so he sat forth down the mountain to find shelter, he wore nothing
but tattered prisoners garb and a maniacal grin on his face.
The Runescarred

Krulndrak had made his way to Galadon and began to scrounge up a life in the
city. At first he found himself among the refuse, the weak, the trash within
the city but his lust for gold soon found him on a more profitable paths.
He robbed, he murdered and even bartered his priestly knowledge and skills to
those less than "wonderful" folk that made up the underworld of Galadon. As
his purse bag began to grow he decided he was going to do something about the
many scar's he had suffered while under dwarven captivity. His face was
marred with cuts and he was really a wretched sight to behold. He had adorned
his wares with various treasures and now it was time to modify his visage.
Krulndrak decided he wanted to line the crevices of his facial scars with
gold, the process would be painful indeed and the gold would need to be
molten, but the end result would certainly bring to bear all who came into his
presence fear and respect. This was a very delicate endeavor, the gold would
not simply adhere to his face and healing over time would push the metal from
his flesh. He needed something to aide in this, something runic to bind the
gold to his flesh. This would also be a tribute to Krulndrak's patron Lord,
the King of Goblins Skreenak. So failure was not an option.
The warlord-priest had already begun his research and dealings with the Scions
of Eternal Night, those of the dreadful pit chasm. And in these dealings he
had learned about the various planes of existence, those of Shadow and even
the Abyssal plane. He had decided he would perform a dark ritual, a unholy
outreach to those of the abyss. Perhaps they would grant him the runic power
he needed to seal the gold to his scars.
Krundrak gathered the necessary materials, waited for the correct moon and
time of day. So it would be on the Day of Deception, midnight and in the
Month of Ancient Darkness he would call upon the forces of Evil, the
Demonspawn of the deep to aide him in his task. And to both his excitement
and horror something from the Abyss did indeed respond to his call. A very
nasty and fearless Morosa demon headed the unholy chants, it was angry and
upon arrival it stared into Krulndrak's eyes and knew his deepest desires.
The demon offered him an exchange... a portion of his soul for the runic
power to seal the gold to his face scars.
And thus forward the priest was known as Krulndrak Runescarred.
