Description
This man stands about six feet in height. He has a broad but average build
for a human. He doesn't look particularly muscular or have any stunning
features. He has a young face, although a few scars and the look in his eyes
suggest he may be older than he looks.
His face is very friendly, highlighted by his ocean blue eyes. He has low
cheek bones and a soft smile. His nose and mouth are what you would expect of
a human.
He is garbed in many fine pieces of clothing, occasionally some seems
branded with a golden sun. He appears to force a smile as you look at him but
he appears wary in his eyes.
Role
The beginning

Laoris' life growing up was traditional. His father was a lumberjack and his
mother a baker. His upbringing was what you would expect. He was raised with
good values and had a normal life.
Laoris always knew he wanted to join a guild of some kind with magic. It
always fascinated him. He had consider becoming an invoker and becoming a
maran for many of his early teenage years.
The fortress of light always inspired him as he had lost his younger brother
to an attack by an evil scion wizard in his youth. The empire was something
he always loathed as well.
The path of the Maran was appealing to him, what boy isn't interested in some
degree to being a great knight vanquishing evil? His perspective changed on
his 16th birthday.
He was celebrating in Galadon and had joined the shapeshifter's guild. He was
ready to embark on his journey to become a maran.
The night went fast and before long was on his way home for some much needed
sleep.
Immediately something seemed wrong. Someone was following him and before long
he saw something emerge from the shadows uttering "Death to Magi!"
He fell backwards dodging the first stab at his midsection. He fell to his
back and looked up in horror as his death stared him in the face. Then,
something happened. A man in armor slammed into the assassin, hurling him to
the ground!
A fight ensued, and both ended up wounded. Near the end of it, the warrior
took a knife to the kidneys. The fiend then took off, vanishing into some
nearby shadows.
The warrior limped up to Laoris, asking if he was ok. Laoris nodded slowly
and the man forced a smile and limped off.
Laoris sat there a moment in shock. When he looked up to properly thank him
and he was gone from sight. Something changed in Laoris that day. He realized
the honor and absolute good in protecting others.
The weeks went on and Laoris would look about for the man who saved him, but
never could find him. He changed his application to the shapeshifters guild
to study only defensive forms. This shocked the guildmaster a bit, and he
argued against it. But finally gave Laoris his wish.
Laoris would repay his hero the best way he could. By emulating and
protecting those in need. He would seek the fortress, but not as a maran. As
an Acolyte, hoping he can do what he can to protect and help others.
Some thoughts

The past couple years have been beneficial to Laoris. He has worked hard and
progressed well in his guild and made several friends. Now a Scribe, he has
had a few brief encounters with the enemies of the Light. He is eager to do
his part to protect others.
He has begun to wonder about those that are of neutral mind. Should he focus
his energy to help them whenever he can? They are not of the light but are
not evil either. He has made several friends that he feels he would protect
that are not of the light.
The other Acolytes are much more personable than he thought they would be.
One of his worries upon joining the fortress was having to deal with
overly-formal and deal with some pompousness. His thoughts are that he isn't
doing this for any kind of recognition or to rise the ranks of the fortress.
He simply wants to do what little he can to make the lives of his friends and
those who need protection a little safer and happier.
An interesting thought occurred to him while speaking with Keara Andira and
Kazzru. Kazzru made the point that destroying evil is a form of protection.
It is not something Laoris completely agrees with. Laoris believes attacking
dark ones randomly only adds more burning hate to them. The role of the
shield is to defend and protect.
Learning

Over the years as Laoris has gained more experience he has come to realize he
has been quite naive. He's come to realize that sometimes the past way to
protect something is through aggressive action. He has come to respect the
Tribunal, even though it has some dark members. The Outlanders, at least some
of them exercise no caution or regard for the lives of others in their wanton
attacks in highly populated areas. Laoris is very troubled by this and feels
strongly for the guards and commoners murdered in such a way. The villagers
are another group that just kill regardless of who may be near. Laoris is
planning to be more proactive in helping the tribunal protect the innocent
against such violence. Also Laoris wants to do what he can to protect his
fellow wizards against the evil intent of the village.
