Description

A hooded figure darts through the shadows. He pauses for a moment and you are able to inspect the shadow a little more closely. This figure is of the felar species. Male it seems by the angle of the face and perhaps the way the yellow eyes look back into your own. He appears to be somewhat smaller than most of his kind and stands at just under 5 feet though it is difficult to tell whether he slouches or not as he is covered in a full length cloak. From what you can see his fur is mostly of an orange colour and lies thickly around his face and extremities. Long sharp claws protrude from his forepaws but are withdrawn on his hindpaws. As you look even closer you spot dull metal gleaming from behind his fur. As your eyes move you spy other such objects. This felar obviously does not rely on his claws alone.

Date : Day of the Great Gods, 12th of the Month of the Frost Giant.

On returning from my latest patrol I received a great accolade. The
Emperor has seen fit to grant me leadership of the Shadow Sect. Even
though I had never held the rank of Elite I did not doubt for one
second that I was undeserving. Those that had previously stood above
me in rank were inferior in every way. Their dedication was lax and
they lacked the art of a true shadow. But that will all soon change.
Another step closer to the throne.

In the end I almost lost track of the number of days I lay in watch.
How many futile attacks I witnessed still amazes me. The Tribunals with
no seemingly concept of patience struck the Refuge time and time again
leaving nothing but magistrate corpses littering the woods.
Several times the rangers scouring the woods came close to my hiding place
on the fringes of their lands. But never did they look past the edges of
the trees to spy out what was hidden to them.

As the hours then days past my vigil remained steadfast and the meditation
taught by my guildmaster and honed in a dozen hunts kept my body from
succumbing to lethargy and ready for the moment to strike.
And finally the time arrived as the rangers and druid scum ventured forth
from their haven on some expedition content in the false belief that their
refuge was safe from harm.

In mere moments the sole guardian's voice was taken from them and the battle
to regain the codex for the Emperor begun. A single ranger returned to the
haven as the battle was almost done but he was no match without his allies
and quickly ran into the deepest parts of the woods to cower.
The codex returned I left the woods as silently as I arrived passing the
same rangers and druids who now hurried back too late to defend their home.
In had taken many days but that had only made the success more worthwhile.

Spending so much time watching my prey has taught me many skills.
I can converse with even the smartest of elves without the look
of the disgust that they often carry when having to speak with
others of my kin. Much training have I put into such things.
Often it is more useful to be able to interact at anothers level
even if I find their ways disgusting. Much more information can
be gleaned from fools when they are more open to you.

This though is quite possibly the oddest habit I have now acquired.
I found a journal on one of my victims and it intrigued me so that
now I have started to keep my own. To put my thoughts into
words on paper is not something I would have considered in my
days with the litter but then nothing much has been the same since
joining the guild.

So this is my first journal entry and fitting it comes on the day
I have sworn oath to the Empire. For weeks on end I had heard the
recruiter's cries so I ventured in and listened when he gave his
propaganda speech to a small crowd. Though I am not so foolish as
to take everything he said at face value there is still much truth
to be gleaned from it.

His stories of triumph and the crusade to bring order to all the
lands were well rehearsed and almost enjoyable to listen to. But
it was not those that sold me. It was the power he spoke of. Of
Emperors come and gone that had risen from the back alleys of the
streets to lead the greatest armies in the land.
And there it is, for even I, Larkis LongClaw - And yes I have come
attached to the nickname my guildmaster bestowed on me - who born
the runt of the litter and almost died in his first years could one
day take the throne.

Background

Added Thu Jul 30 15:35:16 2009 at level 5:
Larkis was born into a large litter. He wasn't the smallest
of his siblings but he was the smallest to survive the
first few days. He was weaker than the other survivors
and struggled at first. Always the last to gain precious
food, always at the bottom of the pile. It was a struggle
at times to just live through the day, a struggle that he
came close to losing on several occasions.

But survive he did and through it he gained strength. Not
strength of body but strength of spirit. Larkis learnt to
survive where others died. Most of the time he spent alone
and instead of it being a curse it made him more aware of his
self and his abilities. It brought a sense of self reliance
that his siblings lacked. Where they hunted together he
hunted alone. Whilst they squabbled amongst themselves
for the best portions of food Larkis took what he needed from
his kills and moved on.

Over time Larkis became more and more of a loner. He left the
pack that he felt like an outcast with and began to travel.
Being little more than a bandit he made his way through many
lands until he came to the city of Galadon. It was there
that he first learnt to live in the shadows. Being of a slight
build he found that he could fit into even the smallest of
spaces and that gave him an edge when he stalked his prey.

But even with his innate abilities he knew that to gain the
skill he needed he would need training. So he petitioned the
guild of assassins until they finally saw fit enough to teach
him their ways.

Once more he ventured into the hunt. Still alone but now with
the training he needed to harness his full potential.
