Description
Hair of golden shimmer cascades down shoulders slight but athletic. Eyes
of startling blue look upon you with a mirthful joy even in tough times. The
girl before you is far too beautiful to be anything but elven in nature.
Her armor, while practical for warfare, is clean and organized and it's easy
to imagine this one attending city events or diplomatic courts as it is
to picture her on the fields of war. Among weapons chose for their obvious
light weight, you notice an assortment of books: philosophical, scientific,
and even magic focused in their topic nature. Books and warfare, it's a
wonder that anyone has time for both with all the troubles in the world.
Role
Simply Not Enough

Learielle, one hand on the side of the white stone archway, leaned around the
corner and peered into the expansive hall beyond. She watched the bustle and
rush of House Aerylon's servants as they fetched damp cloths and buckets of
iced water. Her sisters cries rang thru the powerful house's corridors
as her parents, the Lord and Lady of House Aerylon, looked on in worry. Her
dad consulted with priests and even an alchemist mage who frantically looked
through yet another assortment of healing potions.
Learielle was young, but the young girl knew by her dads solemn look and
urgent words with the gathered priests that all was not right. Not only was
the kind priest of House Aerylon present, but the richly dressed and more
powerful high priestesses of House Darsylon were as well.
Her sister was dying. Lienne was dying and they could not help. Her parents,
the healers, all the elders who she looked up to, could do nothing. The
healing curse was too powerful.
Old Gervan, the gray streaked Master of Arms of House Aerylon sat at
Lienne's bedside now. They said his bandages and bindings were the only
thing keeping her sister alive. Something he had learned at some village or
villa or something he didnt have a name for. Yet the old warrior just
shook his head, saying even these techniques and medicine weren't advanced
enough to save her now.
And so Learielle of House Aerylon, watched her sister die. She could not
remember when the hallways went from screams to silence, but only somehow
that this was a bad thing. All those who loved and cherished her sister could
do nothing and how powerless it all felt.
Truths Laid Bare
Added Wed Dec 18 20:22:39 2019 at level 51:
Learielle of House Aerylon lay sleeping across the desk in the musky Darsylon
library, one arm draped over the side of the desk, another folded beneath her
forehead, her hair a tangled mess. Scattered about the desk was evidence of
her new obsession:
A small white and portable paladin's book on first aid. An old dusty stone
slate piece, depicting bandage techniques from a place calling themselves the
village. The green and musky journal on a druid's favorite mixture of
herbal medicines. Even a ranger's compendium on herbal foraging technique
which seemed so mundane... and probably was what put her to sleep.
When most young elven women would be courting young men and focused on
debutant balls, Learielle could not let go of the powerless feeling that had
swept House Aerylon on the day her sister died. She was not gifted in the
way these medical scholars were, but she was dedicated, dedicated in the
search for knowledge that could have saved her sister.
And in her search of these medical discoveries, the first truth was laid
bare. It was not just medical science that had been lost, but huge feats of
engineering, mechanics, and so many other wonders:
Gnomes with more passion for exciting inventions than today's shapeshifting
magic. Goblins who specialized in sliding doors and lifts that were
mechanical and not magical. Dwarven craftmanship of blending metals, before
the King's started paying handsomely for quicker enchantments. Ballistas,
catapults, and amazing feats of engineering. And then? It all suddenly
stopped. Where were the engineering schools, where were the schools for
doctors? Gone. All replaced by mage guilds and churches instead. A transfer
of discovery from the everyman to the mages and priests.
And so too was the second truth revealed: She was seeking answers in texts
for the lost teachings that could have saved her sister. Yet those answers
would not be found for they didn't exist yet. The world had lost the
science, the schools of thought, the methods to reach those answers. The
world didn't have the answers because it had lost the path.
Reading these ancient manuscripts was like reading a grand story of
adventure, destined for an amazing conclusion... to instead only have the
pages ripped out, and the potential of mankind robbed. And what happened, why
did the journey end? Why did the discovery end?
Magic. Where scientific discovery ended, magic had gained.
A Possibility of Worlds
Added Wed Dec 18 20:35:00 2019 at level 51:
The elven woman Learielle walked the cobbled streets in disguise, hiding her
disgust at seeing how much worse the world could be if the secluded city of
Thar-Acacia had been the way of all the lands. It was a fitting conclusion in
the culmination of her many journeys to the four corners of Thera. She had seen
so many scientific and engineering marvels, but they were all remnants and
scraps of what had been and what was lost.
These scientific feats were a flickering flame before the fire ever began.
That which could have burnt brightly if the flame had been fully lit.
Yet where magic took over, the flame smothered.
In every library, in every oral history of a different race, one lesson
repeated itself. Each race rose to the challenge and developed marvels to
further their versions of civilization. And in nearly every case, all that
progress was abandoned when magic enticed with an easier and simpler way. But
there was a far greater tragedy. People simply stopped seeking to learn.
Learielle looked around at a city so far removed from progress for the
average man and woman, and instead developed and maintained by the most
powerful of Thar-Acacia Archmages.
It was a reminder, not all magic was demons and death in a chaotic night.
Magic could attack with a beautiful glorious light that mystified, an aura of
order that comforted. And you were charmed. So charmed, you didn't remember
what you had lost.
It was like dying in a blizzard she imagined. In the end, you laid down
willingly, giving over to it's warm embrace while letting the world and all
that could have been, slip from your grasp. The world died, you froze, and in
the end you didn't even realize your surrender. You even did it willingly.
Finally, Learielle stopped before the portal at the highest point of
Thar-Acacia's magical tower. They hadn't even prepared a simple and safe
non-magical path out of this place? Had it even occurred to them?
She forced herself to look back at the city below and the alternate version
of reality it represented for Thera. This would not be her world, not now,
not ever. She would starve Thera of magic, freeing a chance for discovery
for every man, woman, and child.
For her, a path HAD occurred, a path for true progress. This was her dedication.
This was her gift to the world.
