Role
background
Added Sun Jul 5 15:56:21 2015 at level 10:
Lithodora's parents were, and perhaps still are, traveling entertainers.
You might say she debuted on stage at the earliest possible age, as her
mother was integrated into the troupes comedic performances even while
greatly pregnant. Humor that played off the annoyances of pregnancy and
toil of child bearing always went over well with the female half of
their audiences, and more often than not it was they who controlled the
purse strings. Generally speaking she was a happy child, if somewhat
mischevious, and it was assumed that when she came of age she would join
the troupe as a full-fledged member.
From an early age she showed aptitude in the physical aspects of the
troupe's craft, if not the others. Acrobatics, juggling, sleight of
hand, that sort of thing. Her singing voice left much to be desired,
however, and she seemed not to lack the gift of memorizing lines, so her
niche would have to be physical performance. That suited her fine; she
was always more comfortable "doing" than "acting".
Her life was mostly progressing according to plan until one fateful day
when the troup was hired to perform at the wedding of some minor noble's
son. The wedding went off without a hich, and the performance was one
of their better ones, if she did say so herself, but as usual the troupe
was expected to hang around and mingle with their hosts. This usually
consisted of a great deal of story-telling, much of it exagerrated, to
satisfy theeir hosts' nearly insatiable desire for tales of daring and
adventure. They seemed to be under the impression that the live of a
traveling troupe was filled with romance and adventure, rather than the
reality, which was that it was a lot of practice, chores, and long days
on the road without much to do.
accusation and escape
Added Sun Jul 5 15:59:33 2015 at level 10:
Nevertheless they obliged, as was expected. On young noble, of the same
as as Lithodora, seemed to take a special interest in her. She was
flattered, of course, but even then she was not completely ignorant of
the ways of the world, so she did not make the mistake of interpreting
his interest as genuine affetion. She agreed, reluctantly, when he
asked permission to show her around the family's gardens. As a rule she
attempted not to put herself in such compromising situations, but then again
it wasn't good business to insult one's hosts.
As it turns out she was right to have been reluctant. The young
nobleman's intentions were far from pure. To make a long story short,
she would return to the banquet hall flustered but unscathed while he
would return with a bloody nose and furious temper. She had assaulted
him without provocation, you see, as he would later tell his father.
Probably in an attempt to rob him and make off with the various jeweled
rings that adorned his fingers. What else would you expect from a
traveler such as her? That's all they know; anyone can tell you that.
As the young nobleman turned out to be a prince, the authorities took
his word over hers and came to arrest her. Some hapless low-ranking
Tribunal was called in to make it official. But when they came to the
troupe's caravan, Lithodora was nowhere to be found. Her parents had
forseen this would be the outcome and had arranged for her escape. She
would go to live with an aunt and uncle who worked a farm near Galadon
and there hopefully escape the questing eye of the Blood Tribunal. It
seemed a shame to waste her natural talents on milking cows and tending
chickens, but it beat rotting in a prison cell. Or worse.
on our own at last
Added Sun Jul 5 16:00:41 2015 at level 10:
So milk cows and tend chickens she did. For as long as she could stand.
Which, it turns out, was not very long. Before the year was out the
road began to call to her again, and eventually she answered. Thanking
her aunt and uncle for everything they'd done for her, she set off for
Galadon to make her own way in the world. As a junior member of the
troupe, however, her skills were completely outclassed by those
performers with permanent gigs in Galadon, and she found work hard to
come by. If only there were some other purpose to which she might
apply her natural talents...
way of the world
Added Wed Jul 22 14:58:07 2015 at level 25:
Lithodora has been on her own for a while now and has generally thrived.
But she is no longer the young, bright-eyed girl eager to see all the world
has to offer. That aspect of her still exists, but it now has to share
space with the knowledge that what the world often offers up is cruelty
and terrible evil. She has taken a life for the first time and realized
she has a great distaste for it. Perhaps thankfully so. Nevertheless, in
becoming a Squire she has committed herself to a path that obligates her
to take life as a matter of course. She ponders this often, during the
quiet times when there is a lull in the struggle.
She is also afflicted with no small amount of guilt for having mistakenly
taken the life of a minotaur warrior who was not, in fact, evil. At the
time she tried to make recompense, but how can one compensate for a life?
The minotaur seemed to think little of it and may actually have been
surprised at her efforts to repay him, but she can't help shake the guilt.
As of yet, however, she has not confided in anyone about it. What does
it say about her, about her soul, that she could so easily do such a
terrible thing?
Also she misses her parents, and the other members of the troupe. Where
are they now, she wonders? Do they still travel the countryside? She
has asked after them at a few inns, but there has been no word. Not that
she expected any; they were not a famous troupe. Still, she thinks of
them often. And she still asks.
the prince and the shadow
Added Mon Jul 27 11:55:43 2015 at level 29:
Lithodora has enlisted the help of the Prince of Fools, Raltevio, and his
Fool's Troupe to discover the fate of her family and the band of entertainers
they traveled with when she last saw them. Raltevio attended the Elder
Prophet's "Night of the Light" and entertained the other attendeeds by
supervising various contests. One in particular required contestants to find
"Charms of Knowledge" which had been hidden around Thera.
These could be invoked to reveal knowledge about spells, prayers, techniques,
etc. Lithodora found two, which was more than most, but the knowledge she
wanted most had nothing to do with tripping and stabbing. She wanted to know
what had become of her loved ones. Her family.
So she gave the two charms back to Raltevio in exchange for his assistance,
as the patron deity of entertainers, and the assistance of his Troupe, in
locating her family. He asked for a description, which she provided, and then
promised to circulate it among his Troupe. He also invited her to stop by his
villa. Lithodora isn't sure where it's located, though, and isn't sure what
she'd find there if she were to go. The Fool is an enigma to her
thoughts lurk beneath that stage paint?
On a darker note, Caecilius, an Imperial Shadow, happened to overhear her
conversation with Raltevio and promised (threatened?) to use the Imperial spy
network to locate her parents. He claimed to be acting selflessly on
Lithodora's behalf because she noticed and remarked on his good looks, but she
seriously doubts that's the truth. No doubt the Empire, were it to find them
first, would seek to use the information against her as a Squire.
So now she is more worried than ever, despite being closer than ever to
finding her family. She hopes and prays that Raltevio and his Troupe uncover
their whereabouts before Caecilius and his spies do.
tragedy
Added Tue Aug 4 09:16:02 2015 at level 37:
Today Lithodora took the life of a particularly craft necromancer,
Acitavian, in Galadon. However, she failed to notice Jackners presence and
consequently earned herself a warrant. A fair trade, in her mind, to end
the life of one so foul. However, there were unforseen consequences.
While trying to heal herself in Arkham she was pursued by the city guard
there and, while attempting to flee, slew one of them, who was innocent.
She confessed this to the Captain and asked what penance he required, but
he only responded that she do penance to her God or Goddess, not him.
Lithodora promised to inform the Marshall of her transgression, who might
be more inclined to dish out punishment, but the Captain's words also shook
her. Who was her Lord or Lady? To whom did she pray? Never the
religious type, at the Captain's words she felt a certain absence in her
life. Not that she was desperate for someone divine to punish her, per
se, but an absence nevertheless.
She commits herself to investigating the Divine. Maybe there's something
to this prayer stuff after all.
omens
Added Fri Aug 14 23:23:58 2015 at level 42:
Some time ago Lithodora had a strange experience. While walking through
the Weald, hidden in the shadows, she sensed a male presence admiring her
from the shadows. But when she turned, it vanished into thin air.
There simply wasn't anything there. Concerned, she began to ask around
to see if anyone else had had similar experiences. Apparently they
had. Arden said he had been tracked by spies to the Inn. And, while
speaking with the painted emissary of Raltevio, she found out that
the High Herald, Daphadee, had been accosed by some sort of vampire.
She's not sure what this all means, but she's determined to get to
the bottom of it.
At the same time, she has decided to submit a creative work to the
party the Shadow Lord, Caecilius, is organizing to honor his Emperor.
She is aware how it looks for one of the Brigade to do such a thing,
but she believes her work will not so much honor Gaspare the Emperor
as it will honor who he once was, before the grief took him and soured
into something so much worse. And perhaps it will honor what his
beloved once held in her heart: self-sacrificial love.
She suspects her submission will be poorly received, given it is far
outside the intended theme of the event.
pride and folly
Added Tue Sep 15 16:48:25 2015 at level 51:
We've been Captain for many years now. We've killed. We've died.
We have sent others to their own deaths. We grow weary, but still we
soldier on. Because we must. We can do no less. Recently, though,
we've begun to grapple with the interplay of pride and wisdom. Courage
and honesty. The Dread Lord has forced us to. And we've come to
the following conclusions:
1. The cause of the Light is not served by fruitless sacrifice in
situations where the likelihood of success is vanishingly small.
2. It is understandable that one should feel compelled to enter such
situations when the alternative is inaction. Especially when the
Fortress itself is under assault.
3. This is because *not* obliging the opponent who engineers such a
situation forces one to acknowledge one's own limitations, and many
prefer to believe there is no one opponent against whom the odds of
success are so small as to argue against engagement.
The corollary to the above is, of course, is that one must be able to
accurately assess the odds of success and risks of a given situation.
And one must always tolerate some level of risk, or else one truly is
craven. But how much? This is what vexes us.
How do we inspire the troops when we must retreat before Sodsob like the
mist before dawn? How do we model bravery and courage when cold, hard
logic dictates we not rise to the Watcher's defense?
Should we strive to govern our actions according to this logic, or
rather listen to our heart, which cries out to respond?
