Lohoq Dul'Zrid the Dai Sensei of the Miyama Ryu, Anathema to the Empire

The candle grows low Lohoq, the innkeeper is beginning to shudder his doors,
what shall it be?

The boy played with the tassels on his cloak nervously, raising his gaze upon
the shadowy figure I& . I& . Im not sure, what if I want to leave&

The figure leaned in slowly across the table, pipeweed seeping out of his
cape Then you shall leave, I will make sure no harm shall come to you.  The
figure leaned back, resting his legs upon the table.

Lohoq nodded solemnly I will do it, when I am ready.  His face became
washed with confidence, the dimming light flickering off his pale green eyes.


The figure jumped from the seat and slammed his mug against the oak table
Then it is settled!  Your training begins tonight! Gather your things from
the orphanage and meet me beneath the tower gates.  And with that the figure
dashed out of the inn, trails of smoke following him as he ran into the
night.

Lohoqs eyes shifted towards the stained window, the moons glow casting
shadows on the table.  Ten years ago he found himself a famished, dirty
wretch in the heart of Hamsah Mutazz.  One day a knight passed through the
City, calling upon all of the children that ran amongst the camels, docks and
deserts to follow him to an orphanage where they would be taught to read, and
receive three warm meals a day.Lohoq had followed, in the hopes to end the
pangs of hunger that gnawed on his conscious.

It was within the orphanage Lohoq met his future.  During his first week in
the orphanage, a group of adventurers came in, swords un-hilted, they began
to slaughter the children in their beds, as the old and decrepit Jaragh slept
in his office.  Lohoq had hidden in a large cabinet, reserved for the coats
of the children for when they ventured about Balator.As the sleeping
rooms filled with the corpses and blood of the children, a cold chill filled
the room, the window beside a now empty bed had flung open and a creature
stalked the adventurers.  Lohoq crept from the cabinet, pinning himself close
to the wall.

The adventurers laughs cascaded down the hall as the slaughter continued,
Lohoq crept forward, peering around into the next set of bedrooms, a shadow
flashed beside him and he could see the adventurers stagger back, one fell a
dagger placed in his throat, another soon landed in the doorway, his neck
snapped, the third began to flee but as he ran into the hall a sword launched
from the room, planting itself squarely in his back.   Terror gripped Lohoq,
he staggered back, eyes filling with panic.  The figure emerged breathing
heavily, blood dripping from his hands. The figure peered at Lohoq, and
then tossed him a small, heavy satchel.

Do not be afraid little one, keep this, use it to feed yourself, I will be
watching  And with that the figure strode out of the orphanage, Lohoq sat
there for some time, gripping the satchel, unable to sleep.

Quotes formatting issues.

Terror gripped Lohoq, he staggered back, eyes filling with panic.  The figure
emerged breathing heavily, blood dripping from his hands.   The figure peered
at Lohoq, and then tossed him a small, heavy satchel.

"Do not be afraid little one, keep this, use it to feed yourself, I will be
watching."  And with that the figure strode out fo the orphanage, Lohoq sat
there for some time, gripping the satchel, unable to sleep.

A few years had passed since that terrifying encounter filled with blood and
gold.  Yet, Lohoq always felt that figure with him.  He had found little
comfort in sleeping since then, but when he woke, he would often find a coin
or two under his pillow, or as he ate his gruel outside, a morsel of chicken,
or fresh grapes would find its way into his pocket.

Once a rough hand lifted him from his bed and shoved him under it, still
awash with sleep, Lohoq heard the anguishing cries once more of children
being slaughtered.   As the giants strode out of the orphanage, their grim
work complete, the figure pulled Lohoq into the now silent sleeping quarters
and closed the door.

"They were too strong, even for me.  Stay silent, I am Helfelsior, Elite
Shadow of the Empire, do you enjoy the gifts I have given you?"  Helfelsior
whispered.

Lohoq subconsciously touched his pocket, that was bursting with meat and
vegetables.
"Yes" he replied, staring sheepishly at the ground.

"Good, I have taken an interest in you since the moment you came, your feet
are light, I will protect you and keep your belly full.  Should you seek
something greather than this" he paused and let lohoq gaze
about the carnage and take in the coppery smell of blood.

"Seek the innkeeper just north, tell him you wish to see me, he will
what to do from there.  Stay alive"

Lohoq grew, by ten he was wandering Balator, learning of the ways of the rest
of his people, exploring the fields of Balator, even venturing to the Docks
of Hamsah where he once feasted on rotting fish and spoiled meat.  Helfelsior
was always a presence on his mind, the children often wondered of his new
cloaks, and shiny camelhide boots, but none questioned how he obtained them
when all of the children awoke to such riches.

Helfelsior had given Lohoq tasks, from gathering grain from the fields of
Balator, to tracking adventurers, and great giants moving through the Keep to
the west.  He reported his findings religiously, taking pride in being the
extra set of eyes if Helfelsior needed them.  Lohoq would wander into taverns
and hear talk of great sieges to take place upon the Empire, Helfelsior
especially enjoyed such news.

For the first time, Lohoq began to feel important, and rich.

Lohoq's cloak fluttered as the breeze swept through the graveyard.  He stared
longingly at the stone as wisps of fresh dirt danced across the small plot of
land.  The death and burial of his master did not bode well within his
growing belly.  The spoils of war had grown upon him, he felt the lust for
fine clothing and gold grow, yet even those desires could not match what he
sought in power.  The lessons he learned under the gaze of the master were
not lost upon him.   He had seen many Oaths and shadows admonished in the
public square, the whip cracks against their flesh a visceral reminder of
failure.  One drow was cast from the Empire and flayed till he bled to death
for failing to notify the Emperor of a mass of quicksand that had formed on
the Avenue of Conquest.Another fire giant was quartered when he got lost in
the mountains while the Empire laid siege of the Fortress of Light.

The images of torn limbs, rendered flesh and squirts of blood splashing on
his fine cloaks were a constant reminder of the carnage he saw within the
orphanage.  In between filling the coffers of the Empire, Lohoq began to
visit banks more frequently, depositing small amounts of coin in each, so
Imperial Spies would be unable to track the wealth he amassed.  Soon he would
have his own legion of orphans ready to be trained in the arts of war, as a
constant stable of blood for the Empire. 

As the scent of wet earth filled his nostrils, Lohoq removed a small notebook
from his cloak and scribbled notes in it.  A quick glance reveals a list of
names the last name you see on the page is Jaragh's, with a few symbols
scrawled next to it.  Casting a glance to the swinging gate of the graveyard
he pulled his hood over his head and slid into the darkness.

His finger makes a slow trail along the spine of the tome.  The torches
flickered along the corridor causing shadows to dance upon the cover.  He had
searched for weeks within the Imperial Archives, they spanned the length of
the Imperial underground.  There the search for the past had enveloped him. 
It consumed his thoughts, the rise to power,  the tomes of greatness sprawled
out before him.  Kyrilos, Loradanian, Jazon, Vehldriss, Zridv, Ktarr, and
the Kiss of Death.  Lohoq's eyes froze upon the name, beneath the name a
crude drawing of a woman.  She appears aged, her gray hair, her visage a mess
of wrinkles.  Her body in contrast gives a start contrast to her face, it is
lean, muscular, powerful.  Lohoq's gaze is transfixed upon the picture.His
hand trails down to his breast, the thumping of his heart begins to pound in
his head, causing a twitch of delight to crawl into his eyes.  Slowly turning
the page its empty pages sprawl out before him, with his free hand he begins
to trace his name, as he completes the "Q" he lifts his finger, a look of
puzzlement washes over his face.  Lohoq's brows furrow as beads of sweat form
on his forehead.  The finger moves towards the page and he begins to trace
"Dul'Zrid".  A thin smile washes over his face.He snaps the tome shut and
places it neatly back on its shelf.  The shadows grow as the torch sputters
and hisses.  As the darkness envelopes Lohoq, you hear the faint sound of
boots marching above.  

A human hunches over an old oak table.  In his right hand a quill flicks
violently as it scribbles down writing on old parchment.  The flowing script
stretches from the top of the paper to the bottom.  The figure rises from the
table and shoves the parchment into his cloak.  Sliding into the darkness you
see watchmen snoozing along a small village.  In the background you hear the
clash of weapon's and what could only be described as a constant stream of
cursing of the Dwarven tongue.  The figure creeps towards a small building. 
Above the door you see an old, haggard sign "Orphanage of Balato-" the rest
of the sign appears singed.

The figure quietly creeps into the house and into a bedroom.  His eyes fall
upon the sleeping beds of children.  He reaches under his robe, you see the
hilt of a dark dagger in his waistband.Stepping towards a bed he reaches
deeper into his robe and pulls a small pouch.  Placing it under the pillow of
the bed he strokes the boys hair and pulls the blanked slightly higher.

As dawn appears on the horizon the figure has fled into the darkness,
following the shadows.  An old paladin, in beat up plates emerges from his
office.As he opens his door a note flutters in the wind, stuck in place by
a dagger covered in blood.


"Jaragh,
We will purchase it from you in the amount of 1,000 gold coins.For too long
your muddled mind has led to the slaughter of hundreds of children without a
single care from your old gray head.  The time to finally make them truly
safe from the harm of this world is upon you.  If you should refuse such a
generous offer you will not live to see next year's harvest."

Lohoq Dul'Zrid, Imperial Shadow Lord.  

Lohoq stared absently at his hands as they became cold and clammy.  He could
feel the strain of some fifty odd years weighing down on him.  The Imperial
Throne stood before him, magnificient in all its glory.    Taking a large gulp
he stepped forward and reached towards it, at last, his dream realized he
would become the ruler of all Thera.  A thin smile crossed his face.  He had
outsmarted the council, played them all into his hands, Jaragh would surely
fall under the weight of the Empire and he would be rich with children to
mold into his liking.  His trembling hand met the stone, a sudden shockwave
rippled through his body.  Collapsing to the ground the searing pain he could
see the grinning visage of a felar standing over him in darkened armor.

"well well well Shadow Lord, you are not what you seem" hissed the felar
through clenched teeth.    As he tried to rise he was met by a fist to the back
of his skull sending him into unconsciousness. 

Lohoq could feel his body being dragged through a cobblestone street the
chorus of jeers cascading off tall buildings.  He was dragged deep into the
Imperial underground, within a small dungeon he could see a hooded figure
waiting.  Light glinted off several hooked and barbed devices stained in
blood.  Somewhere in the distance he could hear the screams of other victims.
To his right a coil turned red under the heat of the fire. 

A small chuckle escaped his lips.  As he gazed about him soaking in the
impending torture.  A large gauntled hand came from behind him and struck him
across the face, blood flowed from his mouth, dripping on the dirt floor.  A
large figure moved in front of the torch causing darkness to befall Lohoq.
The figure lifted his head up and began to strike him without relent, the
sound of flesh rending and bones cracking echoed off the walls.    The figure
began to labor under each strike upon the hapless human.  As the figure
relented Lohoq lifted his head one last time, staring transfixed by the torch
light he could hear the sound of children laughing.

He was shook awake by a filthy beggar trying to cut his coin pouch.  He lept
quickly and swatted the beggar away.  The stench of blood and urine filled
his nostrils.  Gathering his wits he staggered into his guild, the guildguard
mumbled something inaudible as he collapsed in the combat room.   

A dull throbbing headache settled in as he gazed warily down, on both arms he
saw two tattoos. 
"Anathema".

Reaching a bruised hand into his cloak he pulls out stained parchment and a pen.
