Description
An emaciated and disheveled figure stands closely to the ever present
shadows. Garbed in a motley array of clothing and armors, this dark
dwarf does not cut an imposing figure. His short height can be
attributed by his twisted spine, making his every move seem a grandiose
task. Misshapen fingers loosely grip the worn and rusted weapon he
awkwardly wields. The hair upon his head is thin and greasy, mingling
in with what is left of his bedraggled beard. His mouth curls into a
sneer, revealing teeth that are chipped and yellowed. Despite his
unimpressive appearance, an unsettling feeling accompanies the fanatical
glint that exists in his dark eyes.

Within the walls of the duergar city, Maergroek was subject to instense
torment, mainly due to the fact that he was born from the unholy union
of duergar and dwarf. His father was a wretch, even by duergar standard,
and his mother, a captive slave. Rape is not uncommon in situations
such as this, however, producing offspring is. Despite the circumstance
of his being, his mother still loved him as only a mother could. As
such, she sheltered him as best she could. Regardless, Maergroek was
always given the most demeaning tasks, the worst being to ensure the
underground sewage pipes were cleaned - inside and out! Years of toil
within these cramped confines took there toll upon his body, twisting
his spine and wreaking havoc upon his physical health.
His life was torment and despair...
...until one fateful day a large band of Voralian Knights descended
upon the duergar city. Their assault was eventually turned back, but
not before a large number of slaves were freed. Maergroek, his mother
in tow, was among the refugees.

Inside the safe "haven" of Voralian city, Maergroek and his mother
received strange stares. Indeed, it is an uncommon sight for a dwarf
and duergar to be traveling together, let alone having ties of kinship.
Word quickly spread throughout the street of this strange sight and
shortly after, a large crowd appeared. Amid the heckling and jeering,
Maergroek's mother stood tall and proud, defiant in the face of their
tormentors. A single rock flew out, striking Maergroek squarely on his
head, sending him reeling to the ground. One became two and two became
many. Covering her beloved son with her own body, Maergroek's mother
took the brunt of the vicious attack. By the time the peacekeepers
were able to restore order, Maergroek was covered in cuts in bruises.
Worse yet, his mother lay lifeless on the ground beside him. No one
lay accountable for the atrocity that had been committed. As such,
anger boiled within his being, unearthing the dark side of his heritage.
Seeing the hate, ridicule, and lack of guilt on the faces of these
"righteous" people, Maergroek quickly realized that that he and they,
deep down inside, were truly not so different. He at least, had the
strength to embrace it.
About Maergroek
Added Mon May 9 13:14:22 2005 at level 24:
Maergroek is a duergar in every sense of the word, despite his bastardized
ancestry. He revels in the misery of others and seeks to bring about the
destruction of those he feels are "evil". Pain, carnage, and death are food
to his dark soul. He knows not the word "love", though if pressed, he would
grudgingly admit some sort of strange feeling for his long dead mother. He
is quite aware of his limitations and inwardly despises his own physical
weakness, though bringing torment upon others makes him feel better.
However, to his displeasure, he is prone to what some would call compassion
on extremely rare occasions. Perhaps this is due to his dwarven nature.
Regardless, this is yet another aspect of himself he despises.
Maergroek desires many things, among them, precious shiny objects and
other material goods. Power is also another main driving force behind
his desires.

Maergroek has been granted the unholy blessing of the Demon Goddess and has
taken it upon himself to fill Her altar with the skulls of the profane.
Once culling the blind from the flock, he feebly attempts to "convert" the
profane. Secretly, he wants them to denounce him so that he can spill their
blood again and collect their heads.
