Description
You can't be sure whether this young woman's skin is naturally bronze or
the result of years spent outdoors, but it marks her unmistakably as one
of the sylvan elves. Her hair is likewise sun-bleached. What must once
have been auburn is now a sandy mixture of blonde and darker red, tied
togther with a length of woven plant fiber. Some green still remains,
which matches her eyes, but time has rendered most of it a mute brown.
Were you a somewhat unimaginative poet you might remark that in her visage
are contained all the colors of autumn. For the less poetic minded she is
quite beautiful to behold. You see little to suggest what her profession
might be except for a small recorder protruding from one of her pockets.
Even the visible portion reveals it to be little more than a child's toy,
though, and a crude one at that.

Born in the primeval forests of Thera's past, Malawen spent her early
childhood in a nomatic existence with her hunter parents. They ranged
both east and west of the human settlement, but most of their time was
spent not far from the mystical wood linking past and present. It was
into this wood that Malawen wandered one day while hunting fowl.
The chaotic magical nature of the wood was like nothing she had
experienced before, and being a child she was naturally frightened. She
wandered aimlessly for an entire day, all the while calling out for her
parents to rescue her. After another day of the same she was near the
point of physical exhaustion, which would surely mean death. Notably,
though, her voice was as strong as ever.
It was at this point, when she was so close to death, that she finally
stopped crying out and began to listen instead. To her surprise, she
found that she was not the only one who had been speaking. Oh, of course
she was the only one using words, but the forest was speaking nevertheless.
She just hadn't been able to hear it over her own yelling. She still
has trouble expressing why, but she began to sense that the forest was
urging her to follow certain paths and not others. Maybe it was leading
her back to her parents? Surely that was it?
found

Some would say it was pure luck that she found her way out. Others might
credit the divine. Still others, though, might recognize it as something
older and wiser, even, than the minor deities who decorate the Theran
pantheon. Something whose knowledge of past and present compelled it to
draw Malawen out of the the safety she had known and into a strange and
terrifying new world.
The remainder of Malawen's childhood was spent in the Holy Grove. She was
taken in by the druids who make their home there and raised (in a fashion)
as one of their own. It was not a typical childhood. She had almost no
peers of her own age and was often left unsupervised for lengths of time
most would consider negligent. On the other hand, she received an ample
introduction to the various philosophies of her caretakers, who were, for
the most part, careful to see that she came to no harm.
As she grew older, she began to range further and further from the safety
of the Grove, even entering into the surrounding farmland at times. It
was there that she heard music for the first time, played by one of the
travelling bards who frequent that place. With hindsight she would
describe the peformance as that of a novice, at best, but at the time it
made quite an impression on her. It was as if she had been infected with
some strange musical disease, only instead of making her ill it made her
feel more alive than she ever had before.
The druids took note, and knew that the time had come for her to leave
their protection. She took the news well. With a certain amount of
anticipation actually\; she sensed that only "out there" would she find
someone who could assist in developing her nascent musical talent.
Gathering her one possession (a small recorder she'd had with her when
she crossed over from the past) she struck out for the sleepy frontier
settlement she recalled her parents mentioning so many years ago.
Galadon, she thought it was called.
a rude awakening

To say Malawen was shocked upon arriving in Galadon would be quite an
understatment. "Apalled" might be a better word, but even it lacks
the depth to adequately describe her abhorrence for the monstrosity she
found where the tiny frontier village once stood.
Having spent her entire life in a forest of one form or another, the
bustling metropolis of Galadon engendered simultaneous feelings of
disgust, sadness and rage, each stronger than the last. Recall that all
she had known up until this point were the primeval forests of the past
and the limited confines of the Holy Grove. In her memories, Galadon was
nothing but a sleepy frontier town\; barely more than an encampment.
Galadon had, of course, been an imposition on the surrounding wilderness
from its very inception, but now that vile seed had grown to its full
fruition. It was more than she could take. Pride forbade a return to the
Grove, but one way or another she had to get out of the city. If only
there were some way she could make it right again...
