Description

Maldaris is an avian with disturbingly predatory features. A sharp beak, muscular physique and wicked talons stand in stark contrast to his gentle demeanour. He is perfectly groomed, and his posture speaks of gentility and high birth. Every feather is in place, and his wings are politely folded whenever he is not flying. His plumage is unremarkable, and not particularly thick, lending him some resemblance to humans. Feathers of off-white adorn his entire body, and although they are impeccably groomed, they are not particularly conspicuous.

Role

Aftermath: Depravity

Added Thu Oct 8 06:27:41 2009 at level 51:
It is done. I have destroyed Asharkand. It was easier than I had expected.
My adventures and lessons in Thera have made me powerful beyond what their
petty minds can imagine. My former tutors in Magic are pathetic compared to
what I have seen, beings I have met. I am no longer a prince, and Asharkand
no longer exists. I am a creature of destruction, of the eternal night, of
Magic and nothing else.

After destroying Asharkand, I felt a sense of exhilaration, that I have
never felt before. Destruction and power feels so good. I look forward to
bringing the eternal night and eternal destruction to Thera.

The Return Part 4

Added Thu Oct 8 05:05:09 2009 at level 51:
For a moment, the dawn sky dims as shadows emerge from the thin air,
clawing at the Councillor. The well-trained army responds immediately as
spells of dismissal send the shadowy beings shrieking and dispersing in
clouds of black mist. In the midst of the pandemonium, Maldaris laughs,
throwing his head back, throwing his sanity to the winds.

Magical protections are swiftly stripped from the guards with a single word
from the avenging prince. 'Let your final doom begin!' yells Maldaris, his
superbly-trained mind twisting Mana to shape the very elements into pure
destruction.

Bursts of lightning erupt from the skies, blasting soldiers and citizens
into charred, unrecognisable pieces. Scalding blasts of drowning water
erupt seemingly from the ground, asphyxiating scores of arials at once.
As soldiers clamour forward, they are flung back violently by the vortex.
Borrowing energy from the frigid weather, Maldaris invokes shattering cones
of cold. The very elements rage and destroy arials in spectacular fury.

Helpless wizards attempt to strip the prince's spells to no avail, while
their own magics dissipate with a careless gesture from the prince. Soon,
the battle is joined by more shadowy beings. The resulting slaughter is
immense, and citizens and soldiers alike begin to beg for mercy. 'Spare us,
Prince Maldaris! You will rule us again!' Maldaris ignores their cries, for
he no longer has an interest in the town. He exults in the sheer
destruction, flinging spells until his mind is exhausted, and letting the
Ccul'gra rip the town apart.

The reaping continues for hours, and what was once Asharkand ceases to
exist. By evening, the lone prince leaves the shattered town and returns to
the surface. His revenge is complete. New goals await.

The Return Part 3

Added Thu Oct 8 05:04:18 2009 at level 51:
'Is this how my loyal subjects welcome me? I am Maldaris, Prince of
Asharkand, now your rightful King! I was to rule you, not this Council and
Advisors who have usurped my place!' The echoes reverberate through the
town square, and alarms begin to ring over the guard towers. Soldiers, both
warriors and battle-mages, begin to swarm the square as the Councillors
climb out of bed to face this visitor. The brave guard who had accosted the
returning prince steps forward, intending to subdue him. With no visible
movement on Maldaris' part, a vortex of swirling wind flings him twenty
yards back and slams him against a house.

'Cease this foolishness at once! Maldaris Asharkand, you are under arrest
by the order of the Council of Five of The New Township of Equality for
grievous crimes against the liberties of the citizens. You will be tried
by our tribunal. Come peacefully, and you will have a fair trial instead of
a painful death.' A commanding figure, presumably the lead Councillor,
announces with the pompous authority of one who (wrongfully) believes
himself to be in power. The guards and mages, some fifty-odd of them, edge
dangerously closer.

The Return Part 2

Added Thu Oct 8 05:03:45 2009 at level 51:
A tired guard shrouded in heavy ponchos, his wings folded behind his back,
accosts the visitor, 'Who are you? We don't get visitors often in Equality,
much less in weather like this. What manner of being are you?...' His voice
trails off as he notices the otherworldly creature forged entirely of
shadow beside the first figure.

'I had thought this place was Asharkand. What happened?' asks the shadowed
arial (who, as we must know by now, is Maldaris Asharkand, former prince of
Asharkand and fugitive). The guard replies - 'No, this is the New Township
of Equality. No more are we under the yoke of the Asharkands. We are ruled
by the Council of People and the Ten Advisors.'

Maldaris asks - 'And the Asharkand family is dead?' The guard replies -
'Yes, every one of them. This is a new town. Now, you must tell me who you
are.'

Maldaris pauses, and notices the weather subsiding, and citizens of
Equality/Asharkand stepping out of their homes to watch the spectacle.
Conjurers are not unknown in Asharkand, but few have the audacity to carry
a clearly extraplanar being beside them while conducting ordinary business
in the city. The crackle of magic asserts its presence yet again, as the
disgraced prince speaks. His voice is amplified by the report of thunder,
and carried swiftly through the air.

The Return Part 1

Added Thu Oct 8 05:02:33 2009 at level 51:
It is snowing upon the craggy peaks northeast of the Arial City. The very
stones themselves shudder as violent gusts hurl sheets of freezing sleet
against the cliff faces. The fury of the elements is tremendous, and no
life is present upon these heights. A lone winged figure steps over the
rocks, using its wings to fly over difficult terrain, seemingly oblivious
to the lethal elements. Buffeting gales simply slide past it, and the chill
that would fell a polar bear in seconds poses no stop to it.

Beside the winged figure, another one follows. Similarly immune to the
inimical weather and altitude, it glides silently on wings of the purest
shadow. The crackle of magic surrounds both figures, more powerfully on the
first winged figure shrouded in dark cloaks. It is only after an hour that
the two creatures finally reach their destination.

The town of Asharkand is a secluded aerie nestled high in the peaks some
leagues northeast of Arial City. All its inhabitants are wisely ensconced
in their nests, for arials are known to fear the snow, sleet, rain and
lightning amongst which they so often live. Asharkand is a quiet town,
completely secluded from those unable to fly. All its inhabitants are
arials, and visitors are rare. Trade is carried out by sending floating
caravans of goods to and from Arial City, which has a flourishing trade
market with the surface folk.

At last, the first figure speaks, throwing off his dark cloak and landing
silently on the town centre, 'It's good to be home.'

Aiding Ravirhn the Invoker

Added Tue Oct 6 04:08:40 2009 at level 51:
I have just aided Ravirhn with some of his inquiries on sleek rods in order
to strengthen Magic. Of course, I was careful to check that his allegiances
would not go against me, or the Chasm. This may make a Mage stronger and
may win me an ally.

Exploration and Exploitation

Added Tue Oct 6 03:48:58 2009 at level 51:
Exploration is important to Maldaris because he understands that unlike a
warrior, a Mage depends on knowledge. Magical secrets hidden anywhere in
Thera ought to be unearthed so that he (and those whose lives he deigns to
spare) can use them.

Maldaris also understands that in the grand scheme of things, no matter how
much he may dislike certain Scions (especially the non-Mages who presume to
join), he is forced to work alongside them. Given the scarcity of Scions
compared to the Empire, Fortress and other groups, it is unlikely that he
will openly confront anyone within the Chasm. More important things need to
be done.

The Sphere of Magic

Added Tue Oct 6 03:48:30 2009 at level 51:
The Sphere of Magic is particularly important to Maldaris. Magic is not
only a tool, as mentioned in the above chapters, but also the ultimate goal
of Maldaris' life. Not only does he wish to further his own Magic, he also
wishes to spread the use of Magic all throughout Thera - only insofar as
his supremacy remains unchallenged. Of course, he will not tutor an elven
Mage out to kill him. For that reason, the Nexus is a cabal he will not
usually strike unless there is a vendetta or when the balance tilts against
the Scions.

Consequently, he will follow Lord Twist. He does not consider himself a
Priest - such is antithetical to his belief in the supremacy of Magic. As
such, he will not spend much time praying to Lord Twist. Instead, he will
work on eradicating the Village, strengthening Mages in the Chasm and even
other Mages who do not pose a threat to him. He will seek to discuss and
do research into Magic, be it Necromancy, Invocation or pure theory.

Ascension

Added Tue Oct 6 03:47:52 2009 at level 51:
Maldaris has joined the Scions of the Eternal Night. Accordingly, he has
had to adjust his beliefs alongside the obligations he owes to the Chasm.
A subtle change has been occurring all the time, and over time, the change
is now evident. In the past, he was a scholar who was wicked. Now, he is a
wicked killer who is also a scholar. The difference, to Maldaris, is a
very natural consequence of earning the rightful power to which he was
born. He was born with magical talent, just as he was born royalty. Now
that his old town has turned itself upon their rulers, he could no longer
rely on his royalty to feel superior to the unwashed masses.

For a long time as he strove and studied, he did so with a bitter
resentment in a world that crushed him at the bottom. Now, with the
assistance of his magic, he has risen to become one of the most powerful
adventurers in Thera.

Who Maldaris kills: Everyone not a Scion. However, if there are other
enemies around, he will prioritise. For example, he feels nothing but
contempt for the Orcs. Yet he will kill a Maran who was fighting an Orc.
The priority is as follows: Village, Fortress and all who are
Lightwalkers, Empire/Outlander. One exception is Herald. He condescends to
spare Herald lives because they are partially responsible for the keeping
of general scholarship, and within that category, some magical
scholarship.

The Scions of Eternal Night

Added Tue Sep 15 13:02:23 2009 at level 48:
I have risen - after a few too many deaths for my liking - near the
pinnacle. I have located the ancient artifacts of protection for Barrier
and Aura. One day, when I have more knowledge, I should study the nature
of these protective spells and why they are so difficult to replicate
without a device as foci. I have spoken with some of the Scions, Bambizlo
and Frismund at length, and found them to be a wise and worthy group of
scholars.

Magic is Power, and these Scions know it, far better than those in Empire
do. Power is worth pursuing, and delightful to use as one pleases, and the
relentless preaching of 'goodness' and meekness by the Fortress disgusts
me. What has this world shown me but betrayal and hatred? It deserves
nothing more than the same in return. I will join these Scions and learn
the great powers they have, and unleash the Eternal Night upon this world.

Admittedly, there are many technical issues at hand. It is not easy at all
to create and subsequently maintain a portal of sufficient strength. Even
Maethien, whose secrets we have yet to fully unlock, is somehow limited in
its capacity. Azuremain's portal is far more tenuous, and is unlikely to
serve as a practical model upon which to engineer a proper portal. These
are thoughts that I shall note for now, and may they serve me later.

My Journey Thus Far

Added Fri Aug 28 03:13:50 2009 at level 31:
Despite the petty interference of imbeciles, such as the Village, I have
persevered and risen somewhat higher... though not high enough to challenge
the multitudes of intellectually impaired creatures. The study of Magic is
truly fascinating, but I need fellow scholars to discuss with. The elves
are a very intelligent people, but they have foolish notions of morality.
Morality is relative and it is futile to define it in the terms the 'good'
have employed. The Chasm has a number of texts I would love to read. While
I have entertained the thought of breaking in, my research has shown that
some texts are available only to the initiated.

The same research on the Scions of Eternal Night has yielded useful
results. They are the ultimate scholars who are unfettered by chains of
foolish morals, whether the tyrannical superiority complex of Empire, or
the weakling Fortress and their hypocritical posturing. They, like myself,
seek knowledge. They will be useful allies. I hate having to deal with
other people, but if my adventures have taught me anything, I have learned
that it is a sad necessity in a crowded world... too crowded. This world
has too many inhabitants... for now. It would be pleasing, and also
intellectually interesting, to observe the effects of a horde of
C'cul'gra devouring the weak in this world.

Maldaris Asharkand, Prince of Asharkand

New Developments and Setbacks

Added Wed Aug 26 00:49:01 2009 at level 30:
Maldaris has learned the painful way that a young Invoker is heavily
reliant on friends and cannot afford to offend those around him. Hence, he
has adopted some manners of speech considered polite by people. His many
setbacks have tempered his arrogance somewhat. Being born a Prince, he had
an inherent sense of superiority over what he deems 'common' folk, but the
exigencies of his adventuring life has convinced him to hide his arrogance
beneath a polite facade.

However, all this has not dulled his desire to gain power and learn more
Magic, forbidden or not. When he has reached sufficient power and is
worthy, he will bargain with the Scions of Eternal Night... his potent
elemental magics for their unique knowledge of the C'cul'gra. Their goals
also seem interesting and worthy to him. The bringing of Eternal Night is
one he believes will elevate him above the weak, and establish him once
again as being on top of the pile.

Characteristics

Added Wed May 13 10:57:32 2009 at level 9:
Maldaris has several characteristics - He is not particularly spiteful or
malicious. He is simply bitter and logical, and his logic compels him to do
evil. He is utterly rational and rarely makes a show of emotion. He speaks
differently from others, preferring quantitative and qualitative precision
of meaning over the foolish chatter others call 'language'. Like everything
else, language is a tool. The only true study that is not a tool, but an
end in itself, is magic.

Alignment, Ethos, Sphere

Added Wed May 13 09:17:47 2009 at level 1:
Maldaris is Chaotic and Evil. He has lost his idealism and lost any faith
he once had in civilisation and order. He believes himself wronged, and has
a bitter, cynical view of the sentient species of Thera. All Therans were
either foolish, or selfish, or both. Having been a student of philosophy,
he is in agreement with the view of a darker sentient nature - Therans are
always inclined to harming themselves and destruction. He sees absolutely
no way to change this immutable fact of life.

He has given up on idealistic and vain beliefs. He cares only for himself,
and if he is to harm or kill others, it is not considered morally wrong as
everyone else is wrong and self-destructive. His major passion now is to
study more of Magic, it is only the exercise of his intellect that matters
to him.

To this end, he will consider the destruction of the world a good thing.
With this apocalyptic vision in mind, he is likely to seek the Scions of
Eternal Night. He seeks them for three reasons - power, the advancing of
magic, and the destruction of fools too flawed to deserve to live.

Sphere Magic - This indicates a general enthusiasm for the study of all
magic, as well as the exultation in the use of magic as a destructive or
manipulative force.

Noble Beginnings

Added Wed May 13 09:17:06 2009 at level 1:
Despite the relatively short lives of arials and the sparseness of their
towns or villages, there exist some social distinctions within sufficiently
large arial societies. Maldaris was born to the rulers of a small township
called Asharkand, a name derived directly from the ruling family's name.

Maldaris was the 'prince' in Asharkand, and was to take over after his
father's demise. While he was young, he was given every bit of education
deemed necessary to a noble prince, which included extensive study of
philosophy, logic, magic, diplomacy, deportment, and simply too much for a
young arial to cope with, despite their racial intelligence. Young Maldaris
was not evil to begin with, but some events changed it all.

He was idealistic. He believed that he had a true calling to rule his
people. He believed that he was the one most suited to ruling the people
of Asharkand, and that was exactly what his father and the rest of the
family believed as well. The commoners were to be protected and led with
the superior wisdom of the Asharkands, and anyone seeking to gain power is
considered evil and disruptive to the society, and hence executed. Every
means of repressing opposition was used in Asharkand, which left the town
in a state of constant tension.

It did not take long for the neighbouring town to take advantage of this
state of affairs by inciting rebellion and arming the commoners. In short,
Asharkand was renamed New Township of Equality, and the 'foolish',
'rebellious' peasants took over. Maldaris' family was slain in a swift
strike, but Maldaris managed to use a magical device to transport himself
to safety.
