Malgren the Brutal Lyricist, Elite Imperial Warlock

Role

Malgren had a troubled childhood.
The son of a mediocre specimen of his race, he was gifted and cursed in
turn to surpass his father's genetics in every conceivable way. Where his
father was short, he was tall; and where his father was inept, he was
talented. Alas, even the most gifted child is but a child, and his father
often would vent his rage at the world upon his son. Malgren wasn't sure
who his mother was, having memories only of his father.
Fortunately for the young Malgren, weak fire giants do not last long in
Galadon. His father met a timely end at the end of an elven blade, and
that was the beginning of life as an orphan.
There were worse places to be an orphan than on the streets of Galadon, but
Malgren's race once more proved his undoing. Standing out was bad. It made
stealing food hard, and the guard immediately took notice of him where
ever he went.

Being a giant was not all bad.
If there was a universal truth to be found in his life up until that point,
Malgren decided that it was there was always use for strength. Lifting
crates and barrels might not be anything special, but the merchants would
give him 3 coppers for his trouble.
As he proved reliable, some of the delivery drivers would even permit him
to ride along with them to their destinations; he'd get time away from
Galadon, and get paid more. it was good.
It was on one such journey that Malgren found himself at the Inn of the
Eternal Star. The driver had decided on a meal before returning, and
though Malgren could neither afford or was offered food, he was permitted
to sit inside while his employer ate. It was for that reason that he was
present when the elven bard sang.
It was unlike anything the young giant had heard before. Entrancing.
Glorious. The fire in his blood burned and his fingers itched for
something, though at the time he knew not what. He'd never seen someone
eat so fast, for surely they had not been there long when the driver
decreed it was time to depart.
From then on Malgren would spend long hours listening outside the Bard's
guild in Galadon; and a new found ferocity and brutality dissuaded any of
his typical enemies from approaching him when doing so.

Yet the day came when Malgren had mustered a full 10 silver pieces to his
name, and determined it was time.
He asked to join, to learn to sing as the elves with their high voices sang
. To learn to inspire such fire in the blood and reckless abandon as they
inspired with their words.
He was denied, jeered, and mocked. Sent packing with not the sweet song in
his ears, but contempt and the declaration that no giant had the capacity
to sing songs such as they sang. He was furious, despondent, and resentful
.
Yet Malgren would not surrender so easily. He knew of someone who may be
able to help him; someone not even the elves would dare laugh at with
their beautiful voices and mock with their silver tongues.
Malgren went to find the magic giant, who lived in the house off of river
road.
Malgren had a healthy respect for magic.
He knew that with his great hands he could break gnomes as easily as he
lifted the crates and barrels; yet if those gnomes knew magic, they could
bring ice and snow down upon him to quench his warmth and life. If gnomes
could do that, a great giant like himself would be even more dangerous.
Surely such a mighty sorcerer would know a spell to make his tongue as
swift as his body was strong.
Yet as he stood before the giant that yet towered over his immature form
and posed his question, the sorcerer's sneer was implacable. The brute
spoke of destruction, of spells to rip the sight from the eyes, and most
terrible of a spell to steal the sound from the ears. Yet there was
nothing of making what was already present better, for such things were
beyond even the greatest of this sorcerer's ilk.
Malgren found this both interesting and depressing in turn, but was
distracted. For on the edge of perception he could hear the most beautiful
song that he had ever encountered to date. Such emotion; such transcendent
passion. He needed it.
"Where can Gren get singing axe?"
The magic giant paused, an expression more terrible than the sneer
splitting his face as he grinned. "If its the unholy blessing yuh want boy
, Gerklang can teach that..."
Malgren nodded.
He needed it.
He'd make his own kind of song; and it would eclipse all others.
He would add their voices to his own.
Let them dismiss him then.

To be told by everyone that you will never attain your dream is a hard
thing. To be condemned for being a bad giant, particularly when physically
gifted. Malgren had never cared. Or thought he hadn't.
Yet when the immortal artist Gaspare Gnazzo told him that he could help
Malgren to achieve that which he so craved to become a musician in truth,
he realised that he had cared. For the acknowledgement of potential set
such a fire in his blood and soul that he would never have believed, and
when he was asked what he would do to make his dream a reality his honesty
was immediate. The mighty lich's song still echoing in his ears, he
promised his all.
His path was laid out for him. He got slightly drunk for the first time;
and his loyalty was given in totality.

Gren learned to write from Hamsah guildmaster. Broke lots of pens and
papers. Need to get better, so Gren going to start keeping journal book
thing like crazy mage in planar sanctum. Gren must remember not to write
down things that would make people want to stab Gren.
Gren worked long and hard on words for song to show Lord Gaspare. Gren
struggle to say some of them, and Gren not good at singing. Lord Gaspare
said Gren has a way with words though and maybe music is Gren's muse
rather than Gren's calling. Gren goes to seek out music in every day life
and see what inspiration it gives Gren. Then Gren make art!
Gren took long time to find proper sublime word for song. Gren think it
didn't sound quite right until did that. Gren say it wrong when performing
, and that not do. Gren needs to practice saying strange words so come
easily to tongue when need.
In other business, Empire keeps Gren very busy. Dreadlord magic mighty and
demands much of Gren. Gren not good at making coins, but Gren will not be
failure. After awful blue giant Maran killed Gren had to think lots on
battle plan. Gren took blue giant's soul next time, was good. Gren thinks
this means Gren needs to use brain more than axe, but is hard. Not help
with all brain mages that try to melt Gren's brain.

Gren art grows. Gren did as Lord Gaspare say. Listen where ever Gren went.
In palace when chop elf in half. In nasty forest when blue giant chop off
Gren's head. In inn when waiting for slow divine sect. In butcher when
butcher chopping stuff. Gren wrote many words, but Gren was missing
something, it were good but weren't right.
Then Gren falter when retrieiving Emperor's book from tree. Gren get
distracted by listening to birds in trees and tree people take all Gren's
shiny things, but worst take Gren's souls. Was terrible pain, and Gren
think he finally understand what people mean when they talk about mourning
stuff. Gren not sure about mourning people, but Gren know those souls
never come back. Was bad. Like knife in giant chest but on inside passed
mighty thick skin.
Gren went and sat at favourite place outside great Barovia castle, and Gren
listen. Gren wrote best work Gren think. Think finally understand. Lord
Gaspare liked, said will look at Gren's brain when Gren dies. Now Gren
must work on even greater work, to be shown to audience. Gren must find
words only Gren can tell them. Gren think Gren has idea. Is hard, but Gren
will be great giant.
Gren has been dealing with village thief lots. Is strange short half person
, but likes art so is ok. Gren would prefer thief not stab Gren with knife,
but it gave Gren idea so Gren wrote her art. She like it and said she will
write down. Gren think this good. When Gren chops off her head art will
still stay. Gren's words outlive thief and Gren both then.

Gren finally finish his latest art. Took up six pages. Gren's writing still
too big, though at least waste less paper now. Gren carries with him where
ever goes, but starts to wonder if this risky. Gren thinks will write big
art in this book then hide book so noone find. Then if blue giants take
all Gren's shinies again not get only copies of Gren's art.
Gren call this one prevail. Show to Lord Gaspare soon. Was looking for
person to sing but only bard who will talk with Gren always drunk. Nuh
matter, Gren sure there someone, just busy making art somewhere.
An empty life is that which lacks
A drive or dream to claim;
Be that great glory or power,
Or something most profane.
To know that you shall have your due
No matter cost incurred;
Endure through all contempt that comes,
Let their jeers go unheard.
Failure, assured, such things are known
It cannot come to pass;
They look but will not see the truth,
As through a broken glass.
For those that seek a path is there
Though it may be a quest to walk;
Yet when the chance is granted you,
Strike like a diving hawk.
Triumph, glory, a dream awaits
Inspiration most profound;
Despite all mockery conveyed,
A victory abound.
So go, take up weapon or voice
The driven do not fail;
Though you may stumble on the way,
In darkness we prevail.

Gren is an artist now.
Mighty Lord Gaspare spoke with Gren after Gren's performance. Asked Gren
questions. Blessed Gren with his art in form of mark. Already great mark
sets Gren's blood to fire and ice in turn, making Gren feel greatness and
pain in chest as mark decrees. Gren's next work will be painful, but when
Gren's words come they shall be greatest yet. As Lord Gaspare has blessed
Gren with a mark, Gren shall now make own mark upon world. Greatest
journey begins now.
Gren must decide on way to proceed. Blood still burns with the moment of
being considered artist, but Gren know this shall pass and low shall come.
When Gren performed before crowd, many in Empire that Gren believe were
simply curious before were impressed. This is good. Gren will show these
more art, and hope that they can gain even greater appreciation. Is good
lesson, Gren must not write off even shadows as being beyond inspiring.
Immediate concern of Gren's is fate of Dreadlord. Emperor seem eratic to
Gren, and seem to be wanting to make Gren Dreadlord. Gren will be
Dreadlord on Gren's terms, and nuh betray potential artist to do this.
Gren must try find way to secure Dreadlord's position at least until art
can come to fruition. Gren's options limited here, but Gren must think
about this. Maybe if Gren gets self demoted this stall plans for at least
a while, but nuh great plan. Gren good elite!
Gren nuh good at this thinking stuff, but Gren better than was when young.
Maybe when Gren is old and weak Gren will have got hang of it.

Gren nuh like this.
Emperor make new decree. Change law so can strike in cities if engaged
outside.
There interpretation and there rewriting. Is like when Gren write song:
people may interpret different ways, but nuh anyone dare rewrite Gren's
words. Just nuh right. Imperial Law should nuh be rewritten. Has proved
worked. If nuh working, it falt of Empire, not words.
Gren had chance to use Emperor's law to take soul of giant. Gren didn't.
Gren won't. Nuh unless Emperor makes Gren himself. Gren hopes Gren nuh the
only one who think this nuh right. Gren nuh able to do anything about it.
Needs to see Dreadlord, but nuh sure will agree with Gren. Nuh work with
words, so nuh sure will understand. Could seek council with mighty Lord
Gaspare, but Gren nuh feel should bother with this.
Gren worried. Nuh like that may have to rely on Warmaster to see sense.

Mighty Lord Gaspare put end to Emperor's madness. Yet Gren's unease remains
. It is trend. Orcs hold Emperor's items. Spire given fetish to hold.
Emperor decides law can be rewritten. Is nuh all Emperor, but is like
trying to write song on wet paper. Gets somewhere but nuh where want be,
and further through song get the worse gets.

Gren wrote about it. Words were hard, but Gren's art nuh lie.

The law is penned in words quite clear
Simple and most concise;
To destroy this legacy,
A disgraceful device.

Unease, a chill, the path is strayed
Contempt is not our way;
Our oath was given to these laws,
Our word stands come what may.

The cost is high, but here we are
Perhaps our time grows near;
The impending sense of wrongness,
Yet our sight is clear.

This Emperor, who twists the law
He holds the throne this day;
In time his rein shall end and then,
His madness drifts away.

Unease remains, it weighs us down
A tightness within our chest;
We did not like feeling helpless,
A painful choice our test.

It hard that the only member of council Gren has faith in to uphold laws is
the one Gren may have to replace. Dreadlord nuh here, and council weak of
conviction. Greatest sect must nuh be silent now.

Collector tries to tell Gren what Gren wishes. Made Gren so angry! Remind
Gren of when people tell Gren what Gren should be and what nuh ever will
be. Gren wishes to be Dreadlord, but everything Gren done Gren earned, and
earned by being Gren! Nuh going to be some puppet in scheme for weird rich
man. Empire need great Emperor, nuh Emperor who best at finding things
that fall from sky.
Gren will nuh find more statues. Gren nuh anyone's path to power.

Gren is dying.
Nuh ever really think about this before. Gren strong! Has years!
But Gren dying. Can feel it.
Feel it in bones and arms and hands. Nuh as strong now. Tire faster. 
Breaths in chest nuh come as easy, blows with flail nuh come as hard.
Gren nuh want to die.
Gren knew low would come.
But nuh quite like this.
Gren's words hurt Gren.
Had to be written all the same. Maybe most important to write.
Gren performed to inn gathering. Gren think Gren will call it Fading.

The truth that seemed so far away
An eternity to be;
But yet as strength and flesh decays,
The cold reality.

The years that pass like falling sand
The time that drifts away;
A battle with one soldier there,
One we lose, day by day.

So much to do, so little time
Our legacy of pain;
The clock will not be slowed for us,
The final price our brain.

Yet we struggle against what comes
To retain what was made;
But despite all tribulations,
Our life proceeds to fade.

Mighty Lord Gaspare sent Gren on quest to stave off death for a time. Is 
temporary measure, but Gren will not waste. Gren was sent to rewalk Lord 
Gaspare's steps from when gathered things to become great lich in distant 
past. Was journey of great triumph and defeat, and Gren were inspired to 
write about it. Is different to what Gren usually write about, but words 
need be written so Gren write them.
Gren call this the path.

A task to grant our body strength
To walk a path long cold;
To seek and find reagents four,
Two times two clues so told.

Through desert hot and ruins dark
To candlewoods looming tall;
To take a hand from bones picked clean,
This place not where we fall.

So to forest in barren north
Where wolves do hunt and prowl;
A giant elk, so fleet of foot
The stone within most foul.

Triumph, it grows, the trail grows hot
The throne of snakes to find;
Yet doom awaits in shattered halls,
The teeth that gnaw and grind.

Defeat draws near, the key so lost
Beyond our grasping hands;
Yet one last hope avails us yet,
So on to ordered lands.

The council three, and one besides
But one of mortal flesh;
A lich of bone and magic black,
Four strong our army fresh.

So words did end, the battle brought
Fury of combat fanned;
Triumph crimson and pulsing blood,
A heart beating in hand.

So three of four were ours to show
Victory some would claim;
Yet all we think in sleepless nights,
A throne in halls profane.

Now Gren has to worry about what mistake Dreadlord is making that Lord 
Gaspare mention. Could be so many things. Vote? Lich undertaking? Scheme 
Gren nuh know of? Trusting wrong person? nuh trusting right person... must 
try find out. Then there the matter of Sel. Gren still too angry at what 
Sel said to make good decision. Gren think this what getting old means, 
Gren would've smashed right outside Collegio door and thrown body in 
harbour century ago!

For what more can be said;
Our souls are taken from our grasp,
We wished that we were dead.

And so it comes the end we knew
Would come for us in time;
Though this creation lost to us,
Our art remains sublime.

Gren is... tired.

So very tired.

It will nuh be long now.
As Gren sits here in chambers of Black Sect, must answer question strange 
elf asked Gren all those years ago. Would do differently? Would have 
changed last 500 years if could?

Nuh. Gren proved them all wrong. Gren surpassed sorry excuses for artists 
that turned Gren away all those years ago. Gren became mighty force for 
sect. Gained marked acknowledgement of greatest Artist in Thera. Inspired 
many. Brought art to many. Rose to greatest highs and fell to the lowest of 
Gren. All scorn repaid and more.
But... Gren is so tired. Gren fears going to sleep and nuh awaking. That 
nuh end for Gren. Gren's end will be as all Gren's ends have been. Triumph 
until Gren falls!
Gren's hands ache. Gren must pen these words while can.

Gren call it weariness.

We hunger yet, for words untold
Our passion burns like fire;
Yet day by day, fight by fight,
We do begin to tire.

The mind is sharp, the arm is strong
But time does take its due;
It shall not bring us low quite yet,
Though years they do grow few.

At edge of sight where shadows hide
In corners of the eye;
Inch by precious inch it crawls,
The dark before we die.

An ache not quite a physical thing
The knowledge of the end;
We will not die a peaceful death,
A massacre to send.
