Description

An elegant robe of the deepest charcoal enshrouds the figure in front of you. Traces of archaic runes stream up and down in faint yet delicate patterns, and a bronze hem caps off the edges. His pale ivory face appears placid and composed. Flecks of copper gleam in his stark green eyes, setting off a small nose. His lips reveal little emotion, though no lines mar his youth. Meticulous black hair falls shortly upon his head. Your gaze catches a glimpse of his clothing beneath the robe, consisting of fine jewelry and untarnished armors. The hilt of a jeweled dagger barely protrudes, easily within reach.

Role

The Voralian Knights.

Added Mon Mar 1 19:25:05 2010 at level 37:
The young boy paced, insistent to leave.

"Marin, come now, you know you do not belong out there. Remain here with
your father and tend the shop. A new assortment of wands from Tir-Talath
just arrived and he needs you." The middle-aged woman frowned at him as she
said this.

"No, mom, I want to be out there. I can do this, I want to help!" Huffing
loudly he turned and exited the small living space, heading out to the
streets of Voralian City.

"Dear, this is not his calling. You know that." The older man sighed and
whimsically looked at, or maybe through, the door.

***

"Sir Jali, I am ready. Let's go." He stood before the open entryway to the
Guildhall of the Golden Eagle, eagerness more than evident on his face. This
would be his fourth time to tag along behind a few of the Voralian Knights.

"Easy, Marin." Smiling to himself, the large, burly man said, "I think today
we'll be patrolling the north-eastern shore of the Erinin. Baude and Zielix
will be joining us, too," he said talking about the shapeshifter and paladin.

Though he had not passed the entry requirements to join the Voralian Knights,
Marin remained positive and enjoyed his time traveling alongside the knights
as they kept the peace about the city. "Good, let's go!" A lack of physical
spiritual talent could not keep the boy's spirits down.

Discovery.

Added Mon Mar 1 19:30:04 2010 at level 37:
Creeping in and out of the cat-tails, the small band of knights paused,
startled, as a small flock of kites took flight near the river bend.

"Hold." The lithe paladin Zielix mouthed.

Crouching in the foliage for several long moments, Marin eventually sat in
boredom. The broken husk of a large shell catching his eye, the young boy
picked it up and began scraping and digging in the dirt.

"Jali, stay here with him. Something is amiss up the river." With that, the
shapeshifter formed into a long, lean cat and it and the priest moved
upstream.

"What do you have there, Marin?" Jali asked the boy.

"I...I don't know. I just found it." Absent-mindedly tossing the shell
down, Marin plucked up the palm-sized rock. As he cleaned it off it emitted
a strange but faint humming sound, its dirty gray color giving way to a pale
gray-blue translucence. "It looks like some kind of..."

Lightning crackled and popped just as he was about to speak. Birds up and
down the river took to the air as a horrid scream echoed from the river's
falls. Ears ringing, Jali and Marin heard nothing.

But the sight of the darkened, agile form hovering in flight down the river
answered every immediate question. "Anti-paladin," Jali grimaced. Before
the warrior could react, the dark knight leapt high and, reaching its apex,
propelled itself forward, spear first, piecing the throat of Jali.

Snarling to itself, the beast knelt down and savagely fed off corpse, all the
while staring at the young boy in gleeful anticipation. Rising slowly, it
began uttering filthy incantations of death and despair, and Marin sat
motionless, afraid.

Just as the anti-paladin finished its spells, it closed the space between the
two, ready to finish the deed. Clenching a darkened and gruesome short
sword, it drew back to cleave the boy in two.

"NNNOOOO!!!"

SWOOSH

The air instantly plummeted to near zero. Still in the moment, reaching his
hand up as a last resort to block the downward blade, a spectacular blast of
piercing cold erupted from his open hand.

Ears still ringing, Marin could not hear the sound of shattered glass
falling. But he could see it. Pieces of the anti-paladin lay strewn about,
some blasted up to thirty feet away, no piece larger than river rock. There
was no blood, no gore. Only...particles.

Darkness quickly overtook him and he slumped down, unconscious.

Magic's Return.

Added Mon Mar 1 19:34:18 2010 at level 37:
"He'll be fine after some rest." The priest began picking up his
instruments.

"You're sure? Can you explain this?" Marin's mother asked.

Sighing to himself and resetting his glasses, the priest hesitated before
speaking. "No, ma'am, I cannot explain it. Only that your son has abilities
beyond the usual, unknown abilities that surfaced at a time of dire need. He
is, well, only exhausted."

His father, worried, interjected. "What about the stone he was found with?"

"It appears benign. It may be a simple stone, perhaps of good fortune, or
possibly even a remnant from something in the ancient Master's Tower, but
nothing unsettling has been determined about it thus far."

As the priest left, husband and wife consoled each other through the
uncomfortable silence, recognizing for the first time the fear, though left
unspoken at the moment, that each parent faces in their family. Magic often
passes from father or mother to dwell in a child. And long ago, the
patriarch of the Reschel family made the mistake of a lifetime, a warlock of
great renown, falling in coercion to aid the Amrylin and bring ruin to the
shining city.

Magic had not returned to the Reschel family since. Until now.

New Directions.

Added Wed Mar 17 20:51:37 2010 at level 45:
"Are you daft?" The boy grimaced in mild pain, rubbing the fading spots of
red from his arm, the tendrils of spent magic fading from his vision. "You
know you can show me without actually showing me, right?"

Thacacius the Firehearted, the Voralian City guildmaster of invocation,
chuckled to himself. He liked this boy. Eager, kind, and bold, Marin
exhibited the characteristics so few other young mages these days possessed.
He regretted that the boy would not be able to stay in Voralian City and
serve as a Knight. However...

"Marin. Do you know of the Tribunal?" Seeing a lack of assurance, he
continued. "There are other ways to serve, Marin. The Tribunal has long
watched over some of Thera's most grand cities, places you've never even been
to such as Hamsah Mu'tazz and Seantryn Modan. It is a fair organization,
providing sanctuary to all those who wish it. I think you would find it a
fine place to contribute."

The boy simply nodded, ready to get back to his studies. But Thacacius, in
his centuries of experience, did not miss the twinkle of interest in Marin's
eyes.

The Tribunal.

Added Wed Mar 17 20:55:46 2010 at level 45:
"Get on, man, get up!" Marin huffed aloud, annoyance obviously in his voice
as he walked past the street vagabond begging for money. He proudly
patrolled the streets of his old home town, the badge of a Magistrate
attached to the front of his cloak.

Though no longer a young boy, eagerness still smoothed out the sharpness and
alertness of his eyes. His employment in the Spire went to his liking. His
mother harped on Marin when he stopped by to visit - she distrusted the
Provost, a dark-elf, and often made passing comments comparing Marin's
attitude or aspirations to her (the Provost). But Marin found the Provost
unlike any other dark-elf he had ever met. She seemed focused on the law and
little else, not greed, authority, or even power.

Marin neared the apex of his guild. His abilities honed, he often wondered
just how high he might reach, how much magic he could harness. Much would be
needed, for he found daily how little regard others gave to his work.

More Magic.

Added Wed Mar 17 20:57:54 2010 at level 45:
Fire and wind whipped about, rampaging throughout the woods as a seemingly
sentient being. Physically exhausted, Marin focused in on himself, bringing
together the elements not to combat the wildfire but to escalate it against
his enemies. Outlanders hid nearby, ready to rain chaos and despair upon
Marin and his allies, fellow Magistrates.

The Scales were taken. But the centaur guarding them neared death.

It would prove a deadly day for one of Marin's companions, a younger arial
who worked the blades. The Scales would be returned, though.

Magic. The thought fluttered through his mind, rending his focus momentarily
before coalescing into a great gushing of ice and cold. Limitless.
Infinite. Magic. Much would be needed in this war. And it must begin by
visiting the Overlord of the Realm of Mana. Twist.

The Dragon's Tooth.

Added Mon May 3 20:18:30 2010 at level 51:
He needed rest.Quickening his pace, Marin took the larger streets to the
northern part of Voralian, eager to sit in the small tower overlooking the
northern docks. He bled and panted from his fight with a magic-hater, a
Villager.

But there would be no rest. "Rather unimpressive," a voice to his left said
aloud. Marin rubbed at his eyes, trying to ease the blurriness that came
upon him as he looked at the figure along the wall. It did not help.
"Again, rather unimpressive."

"Well. I agree," Marin replied. "Just trying to make something of nothing,
I guess." He paused and uttered the incantations to detect magic.

WOOSH!!

The magical essence emanating from the being overwhelmed Marin like nothing
else.

"That's right, Marin," Twist said. "I have heard your prayers, I see the
potential within you. I am here now." Marin felt more than saw the eyes of
the figure narrow as it continued. "So speak."

Obviously caught off-guard, Marin spoke his tale to the great god Twist.
Though verbose in its telling, Marin conveyed his affinity to magic, its
unlimited potential to bring sanctuary, comfort, and prosperity to the people
of Thera, to end all wars, and to usher in a future greater than any time of
the past.

But magic must be safeguarded. Wizards, stewards, inventors and explorers,
all must have the resources for such noble and lofty pursuits. Magic has
been diminished and fallen in regard even from past centuries. Vermin
Villagers fight and die to eradicate it. Brigands and thugs work to topple
places of research and invention. Darkness wields it for sinister purposes,
and the Island seeks to maintain the status quo.

All work against magic in some capacity. Men and women must rise to defend
the sanctity of magic. It is to that end which Marin works.

It is for that reason Marin bears the mark of the Dragon's Tooth.
