Description

A dark-skinned woman with poor posture is here. When standing, she crouches whether necessary or not. She has a wary look to her brown eyes, and her long dark hair is tied into several uneven parts, all flowing down the back of her head. Her raiments are well-worn, but mostly clean. Not shiny by any means, but far short of any orcish filth or any such thing. Due to the crouch, it is difficult to be sure, but she seems of an average or slightly below average height. She is rather thin, looking perhaps a bit malnourished. Her musculature bespeaks of a wiry strength, however, and her movements are smooth, with no wasted motion.

Role

Role Summary

Added Thu Nov 1 08:24:41 2012 at level 9:
Melindi's formative years have not been kind. More on this later, in the narrative.
The result of the horrors she was subjected to at such a young age is a bit of a
psychosis, leading to a split personality (3 distinct personalities, to be precise).

The Melindi persona is mostly herself (Melindi is the name she was born with), but
she believes "de spirits" speak to her and/or use her body when needed. This is how
she copes with the actions she takes when one of the less-dominant personalities
rises - it wasn't her, it was the spirits taking control of her.

The Moltag persona is a creature of destruction. He generally asserts control when
Melindi is feeling a need/desire to perform acts that one might construe as evil.
When Moltag is in control, Melindi's speech changes to that of a "big dumb fire giant"
and concepts like strength, deception, cunning, courage, and fire are strongly endorsed.

The Ewa persona is impish, with a sharp tongue and a dry wit. Generally a nurturer,
she thrives on merriment, the spark of life, and reveling in the sun and nature.
When Ewa is in control, Melindi's speech sounds more "normal" than her own native way
of speaking. Ewa would never say "de spirits" - she would speak of the Ancients, or
some such, sounding much more like a mischievous elf than Melindi's normal dialect.

Melindi learned of many gods in her early life, and found herself drawn to Whiysdan.
Her fractured mental faculties lead her to feel strong ties to twelve other gods, also.
Fortunately for Whiysdan (and for Melindi, surely) the others are all gods of the past.
This allows her to fully worship Whiysdan while still appreciating the teachings of
past religions. Not all of the gods are necessarily appreciated by Melindi directly -
some are favored by Moltag, and some by Ewa. The full listing of who these gods are
is not something I will bother the reader with at this time.

Melindi's village was primitive (more later) and in the darker, less explored portions
of the Arkham continent. When she wandered to the Academy and the clerk would not
accept "No place you knowin'" as a suitable response to the question of "Hometown?"
she told him Arkham.

Her struggles in her early life have lead her to embrace the teachings of those who
believe in the Mother and Thar-Eris. She will seek to join the Outlander cabal.
More detail to come on her past, in later entries.

Flashbacks - Explanation and Example

Added Fri Nov 2 17:34:54 2012 at level 19:
At times, it may seem to others that Melindi has "zoned out" - she is unresponsive, even
to her own body's needs, often to the point of showing visible signs of starvation or
dehydration. Generally, if this is the case, she is likely experiencing a flashback to
her early years and the horrors that occured during those times. Below are some samples
of what she might be seeing:

[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

"...dat why Ordasen strong like bear. Him will smush dem whut nuh-"

"Hsst, Moltag! They are coming again! Everyone, pretend to be asleep!" Ewa whispers.

You, Ewa, Moltag, and the rest of the slaves quickly roll into your meager bedrolls in
an attempt to feign slumber. Your masters are not fooled.

"They were speaking again, past curfew. Choose one and kill it. I do not care which."

Nedaji, one of those from your former life, captured with you, is seized from the ground
right next to where you lay, and his throat is unceremoniously slit. He is dropped and
collapses to the ground like a marionette with its strings cut, eyes already glazing over
and staring at you as blood leaks from his mouth and throat.

"Let that be a lesson. Do not touch the body - the smell will be the punishment that the
rest of you have earned. Next time we will not be so lenient."

The masters depart, not hearing Moltag mutter "Stupids." as they go. Your eyes remain locked
with Nedaji's. You do not sleep.

You are Melindi, and today would have been your thirteenth birthday.

[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

Melindi's fractured mental state blocks conscious memory of these flashbacks, though the Ewa
and Moltag personas are aware of them. It is likely they will eventually break through to
Melindi's consciousness. Whether the effect of this will be good or ill remains to be seen.

Flashback - Capture and Escape

Added Fri Nov 2 17:36:36 2012 at level 19:
Note: For more information on Melindi's flashbacks, please read role entry 2, which is titled
Flashbacks - Explanation and Example

[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

You are Melindi, and you are eight years old. You are playing in your village with some other
children. The village is deep in the forests, so you have been told, and safe from intrusion
due to it's remote location and the fact that you have nothing of much value to anyone else.
As you play, one of the adults, Nedaji, calls to you and the other children.

You admire Nedaji. He is a skilled hunter, and considered the strongest of the tribe. He was
able to single-handedly fell a wild boar that was rampaging through the village, back when
you were only six. One could do much worse than to be just like Nedaji when one grows older.

Nedaji quietly tells you and the other children that something feels wrong, and suggests you
play inside for a while. The others pout a bit, but do as they are told. You do not pout, but
you are curious. You linger, watching Nedaji as he moves to one edge of the village, warily
holding his spear at the ready.

Abruptly there are strangers rushing into the village from all sides, bearing shiny weapons
and armor. Nedaji spears one attacker immediately, simutaneously calling the alarm, but is
swiftly silenced as he is struck over the head and falls down unconscious. You begin to run,
when you feel something hit the back of your head, hard. The last sight you see before the
darkness settles in is the hut that you were supposed to be in. It is covered in flames.

[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

You are Melindi, and you are sixteen years old. You are standing, near death, over the corpse
of the last of your captors. They believed you tamed. They were wrong. You think Ewa and
Moltag might have been proud of you. Or they might have cursed your name.

You feel massive exultation and overwhelming guilt. You have done things that are abominable,
achieved something nothing short of miraculous. You must shunt all of it aside, for now. You
must complete your escape by leaving this place. None will stop you, if you get ahold of your
emotions and leave. But you must leave NOW. Others will come, eventually, and if they find
you here, all will have been for naught.

You must bind your wounds quickly, clean yourself as much as you can, and lose yourself in
some crowds, somewhere. The masters kept a mirror on the dresser in this bedchamber. You
peer in it to remove the last vestiges of their blood from your face and neck. Moltag's face
greets you in the mirror. His charcoal skin has blood on it that matches your own. You
glance down for a towel, a rag, anything, and when you look back in the mirror, Moltag is gone
and replaced with Ewa's elven beauty. You wipe the blood from Melindi-Ewa-Moltag's skin,
and flee into the moonlight.

Flashback - The Final Three, and the Betrayal

Added Wed Nov 7 21:58:40 2012 at level 34:
[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

You are Melindi, and you are fifteen years old. Ewa, Johando, and Moltag work alongside you,
digging, always digging. Moltag attempted escape yet again a few weeks back. His injuries
seem mostly healed - your meager abilities were not much help, but you did what you could.
Ewa's knowledge of woodcraft might have been a bigger help, but the elf never could bring
herself to actually aid a fire giant. And the giant would not have likely accepted it. A pity,
that. As Johando had pointed out, the four of them might actually be able to pull off an
escape if they could stop bickering and work together.

Johando falters again, dropping a pile of valuable ore. You wince, knowing he will be punished.
Again. It comes swiftly, the masters not even seeming to care what happens with the slaves.
The mine is nearly emptied, and where there were once dozens, only you four remain. Johando
can barely muster the energy to grunt in pain as the blows rain down. You keep your head down
and continue your digging. Attempting to intervene or help the one being punished has never
worked, a lesson you've learned the hard way. Johando will not survive this beating.

[--- White light, blocking out all else, until vision clears ---]

You are Melindi, and you are sixteen years old. In the months following Johando's death, you,
Ewa, and Moltag have been forced to completely drain the mine of all valuable ore. Were it
not for his strength, Moltag would likely have been killed long ago, due to his violent nature
and repeated outbursts and escape attempts. Now that there is nothing that requires his strength,
you all know he will be killed soon. In truth, it is likely that you all will be.

The masters have decided to amuse themselves, however. The three of you will fight. To the death.
The winner will be allowed to live. The masters clearly desire a sexual slave, now. You play along.
Something within you demands that you live. Your spirit will accept no less. You make certain the
masters hear you discuss your strategies with Ewa. She will use her speed and skill to hurt the
giant. You will tend her wounds.

The battle plays out as imagined. Moltag's repeated beatings at the hands of the masters has left
him unable to fight at his best. You tend Ewa's wounds and remain safely out of the way. The giant
bellows in frustration and lashes out wildly. His chaotic barrage actually lands a horrific blow
on the elf, though the exertion takes its toll and he falls. Ewa can finish him off, once healed.

She never expects the blow to the back of the head that you inflict. As she crumples, the last of
her life oozing to the dusty ground, you step up to the giant. He is already dead, he simply will
not admit it yet. Finishing him is akin to putting down an injured animal.

"It is over, masters. Do with me what you will." They believe you broken, now. They will die.

You will be free.

Role Summary Update

Added Sat Dec 1 20:35:51 2012 at level 43:
Melindi's experiences since her first meeting with Whiysdan have been very good. She has
grown in power, but more importantly she has grown in self confidence and spiritually as
well. She feels less and less guilt for the events that led to her freedom so long ago,
and more and more a desire to ensure that the crimes against her soul are not committed
upon another.

To this end, she hunts whenever possible and appropriate. The enemies of the Mother are
many, and seem never-ending, but the hunt fills her with a purpose and a deep-seated
contentment. Each slaver she "puts into de soil" brings a sense of peace.

She is not lost, however, to her primal urges as a predator. One over-arching command
from the Lucky Lord, beyond all others, is that she "have fun." She never allows herself
to forget that very important directive.

Those around Melindi may or may not notice the subtle changes in her behavior.
Ewa and Moltag almost never assert themselves in her speech, though she still
exhibits traits of them from time to time. Her fear of enclosed spaces remains,
but it is no longer something that will incapacitate her and necessitate the Ewa
persona taking over.

She has become, as some would say, comfortable in her own skin. Her friends and allies
among the Outlander cabal help that greatly, as does Whiysdan himself. If things continue
as they are, look for Melindi to begin to attempt to nurture other younger Outlanders and
even take a bit more active role in cabal leadership.

Growing

Added Mon Dec 17 22:34:52 2012 at level 46:
It has been years since Melindi has exhibited traits of Ewa and/or Moltag. She is now simply
Melindi.

The final step in this inner journey was the realization that it had been happening, that it was not
some whispering Ancient or nature spirit, but herself. Sitting alone in a glade where only a trained
woodsman would even perceive her, she came to grips with her lingering guilt and made peace with it.

A part of the process of peace has been a decision to honor those she had felt guilt for. The best
way she could think of was to take their names as her own, in the form of a last name. Melindi's own
true last name (if she ever had one) is unremembered, and so it seemed only fitting.

Growth has taken place in Melindi on an external level as well. She has fully embraced her role as
the hunter, the preserver, and the nurturer. Her friends within the Tree will occasionally ask her
for guidance, especially those with less experience and less knowledge of woodcraft. They are her
family, and she will fight as fiercely as a mother bear to protect them.
