Description
Shadows conceal the features of this lean wanderer, giving
way only to a faint, threatening, ruddy glow coming from
slitted eyes within the depths of his cowl. The broadcloak
flares out and back, beneath twin brooches of unremarkable
design, revealing a torso clad in plated steel. Cutting off
just below the ribcage, the heavy armor gives way to light,
flexible chainmail ribbed with riveted leather. His arms
are protected by crested pauldrons which terminate mid-cheek.
Upon his waist is a wide belt bearing a coiled lash, a dagger,
and an inwardly-curved blade of the kind favored for powerful
hacking, but shunned by most swordsmen for their lack of
defensive prowess. Curiously, a small, black tome trimmed in
bronze and held fast by a chain also hangs from his belt.
It could simply be a traveler's journal, but it carries a
vague air of menace. As your examination concludes, a chance
beam of light penetrates the darkness of his hood, revealing
the unmistakable face of a drow - but this drow bears a
disfiguring scar of, it appears, a phoenix upon his forehead.

"Just leave the bottle," the drow said as he stared into another
shot of warm whiskey as if he were gazing into a lover's eyes.
Amber-hued memories flickered and rippled before him, rousing
vague, directionless anger that he always managed to guide towards
Darsylon, the Guild, Shokai, and anyone else he had the ingenuity
to weave into the tapestry that told tale of his fall from grace.
Unfortunately, he was very intelligent, and so no one escaped his
ire. As he stewed in this broth of self-pity and hatred, the only
thing that could calm the maelstrom was this, his fine, fermented
friend.
The mild upturn in his mood as he downed the shot turned to explosive
rage as he snapped, "Olin, this tastes like dwarven piss water! I
told you I wanted Barovian! Twice!"
With a subtle roll of his eyes and a long exhale that most people
would never notice, Olin responded, "Why don't you keep it down, Mel?
I can't have you bringing everyone down tonight...why, it's the Day
of Freedom, you know? Everyone wants to have a good time, I don't know
why you insi-..."
"Day of FREEDOM, you say?! Oh yes, YES, we ALL want to reminisce about
how FREE we all are, don't we!?" Melrauko spun around on his bar stool
and stood up, emboldened by all the eyes now looking at him. Oh, how
they sickened him. Liars, all of them. They came here to get drunk,
flirt, and hopefully fornicate back at their shitty little farms, caring
not an ounce for the sacred meaning of this day.
Olin sighed heavily this time, and put his head in his hands.
"How about we call this the Day of Truth? Shall I tell you the truth,
my little pigs? This girl here," he said as he pointed to a young
woman with a low-cut blouse, "she's married to that man there." He
pointed to the surprised-looking man who was talking to another woman
at the end of the bar. "She came here because this is her birthday,
and he wanted to celebrate. But, IN FACT, he came here to see this
harlot...no, not that one...yes, the one with the nice ass! Notice
how he doesn't even hide the fact that he's talking to her? That would
definitely cause some trouble back at the ol' farmstead," he proclaimed
the last couple of words with a mock cockney voice and a quick jig,
"if it weren't for the fact that he is going to KILL his BELOVED wife
tonight on the way home!"
A horrified gasp from the crowd couldn't muffle Melrauko's cackling.
After taking a long swig from his bottle (and muttering "piss"), he
announced, "Let's give her a fine sing-along for her birthday, mates!
Happy birthday to yoooouuuuu!! Happy birthday TO yoOoUuuUuuUUuu..."
He was still singing as he found himself being thrown like a heap of
laundry off of the Inn's porch and onto the dirt. Oh, how he loved the
power of truth, and it never ceased to amaze him at how structure and
order were built and maintained with lies, while the truth brought all
to chaos.

His assault went on, growing ever more hateful with each word.
The Grand Court seemed to grow hotter and hotter, and before
Lentharennos had finished he was covered in sweat. The full
dress armor he wore to the hearing felt immensely heavy, and
he burned with what he thought was rage. A gasp from the
jury brought him to his senses enough to realize that he didn't
just "feel" like he was burning, he actually was! The sun's
light had turned white-hot, and his mithril armor seared the
flesh beneath it. In a panic, he began to tear off the plates
of metal, looking helplessly towards the awestruck crowd and
hating them even more for not lending a hand. The last thing
he removed was his circlet, which had been given to him by
his father long ago. He could barely see through his tears,
but through the blinding pain he felt the charred flesh upon
his forehead in the shape of the Phoenix; he had been branded
by his own armor. As he pulled his trembling hand away, he
was further shocked to see that his skin had turned black!
A voice like rolling thunder rumbled through the chamber,
slicing into Lentharennos' mind like damnation itself...
"Lles mele vas ero te vala tanya alme lle, vaste fi las natul rauko."
(Your passion was once the angel that guided you, but it has become
a demon.)
"Vor, Kiirar." (Continue, Lorekeeper.)
Lentharennos could only laugh through his tears as his crimes
were hammered into the stone tablet, which would soon be hung
upon the wall of House Alieniathas and kept for one-hundred
years - their burden of shame for his misdeeds.
"Coercion."
"Hahaha..."
"Torture."
"Hahahaha..."
"Theft."
"Hahahaha!"
"Murder."
"You don't know the half of it! Hahahaha!!"
"High Treason!"
"AHAHAHA..."
An elven name wouldn't do for a drow. No, no, he needed something
more fitting, and who knew better than the Skyborn? He had said
that his passion had become a demon...why not? Melrauko would
serve as a fitting alias after he was banished.

"Lentharennos Ar'dan Aleniathas, you have been found guilty
by a jury of peers on this, the second Day of Freedom, Month
of the Ancient Darkness of the year 707 Ale'Rusva. As this
is an internal matter, your crimes shall be recounted in
the ancient method. Kiirar, you may proceed."
"By your permission, honorable Namo Telaryllana."
"Lentharennos Ar'dan Aleniathas, the tale of your misdeeds
is long. Your standing as a Paladin of the Holy Phoenix
exacerbates the grievous wound that you have done to your
people, your House, and your Guild. Before we commit your
misdeeds to stone, we grant you the privilege to speak on
your behalf and seek leniency, as is our way."
The shackled knight, Lentharennos, stood in the middle of
the Grand Court, illuminated by the radiance of the high
noon sun as it glared down through the high dome's oculus.
He hadn't been listening for a while now. Only thoughts of
anger towards this miserable gathering of Darsylon's finest
raced through his mind, dulling the drone of his condemners
to a faint buzz. When it stopped, he realized that his cousin,
the court's Namo, Telaryllana, was waiting for him to speak.
"...Leniency? Would you be so naive as to believe I have a care
as to what you all think? Since I have the floor for another,
what is it, three minutes? I shall say what I wish."
"Two minutes, thirty seconds, defendant."
"You would have me act as an angel, but gladly put a blade in
my hand to bleed our enemies dry. And when I do my job well,
you call me cruel. I have given my life for all of you, and
to Hell you would send me for it! Damn you! Look in these eyes
and see truth! See yourselves for the hypocrites and cowards
that you are! See the righteousness of this elf glaring back
in condemnation...!"
