Description
The intoxicating scent of jasmine and narcissus oil announces the presence
of the striking man here. The cologne calls to memory muffled laughter at
night, an intimate dinner in a shadowed nook, a quiet intellectual cocktail
party. The man has put some thought into his fragrance.
The man himself is dressed in the loose silks of a Hamsah noble, but with a
traveler's afterthought - bits of armor here and there, somewhat
compromising the look for the sake of utility. His thick black hair is oiled
into curls, framing a friendly, classically handsome face - high cheekbones,
a perfect complexion, with a celestial nose presiding over clean shaven
cheeks. His almond-shaped eyes are a dark brown, almost black, but full of
life. They are carefully outlined in stark kohl.
He sports long, thin chains of platinum around his neck, that entangle
themselves into the black chesthair visible from his seductively unfastened
tunic. His manicured fingers distractedly play with the chains from time to
time, looping them around his fingers lazily.

A Job Well Done
"The Lord is ready for you, Master Merigan."
Merigan stepped past the eunuch servant lightly, wrinkling his nose as he got
a whiff of the eunuch's perfume. "Lilac and gooseberries, Tradon? You smell
like a common whorehouse. Correct it."
The servant flushed and looked down as Merigan passed. "As you say, Master."
Merigan nodded, pleased, and stepped into his father's office.
Lord Najjar had done exceedingly well as the head of their noble house, even
against the rising tariffs of the Sultan in the past decade. He had grown a
relatively quaint fishing legacy into one of the premiere shipping fleets of
Hamsah. Years ago, when Merigan had been a babe, other nobles sniggered of
House Najjar's prospects and middling wealth. Barbs about the smell of fish,
of how House Najjar grew flippers instead of legs. But as the coffers of House
Najjar grew steadily, the jokes tapered off and then disappeared entirely, and
the groveling had begun. They had begun to call his father the Sea Bear, not
in jest, but out of respect.
Merigan had found that he quite liked groveling. At least on the receiving
end.
For all his success, though, Lord Najjar's office still bore the trappings of
a sailor. His father's old wheel, a maple and brass behemoth, was mounted
behind the large mahogany desk that was cluttered with sentimental navigation
devices and a veritable pile of parchment scrolls.
Lord Najjar himself loomed behind the desk, and the trappings of a sailor were
evident in him too. The finery he bedecked himself with, as was expected for
one of his status, was belied by his broad shoulders and his heavily muscled
figure - although, Merigan thought, he had let his belly go in the past few
years. A few more years and he'd be the Sea Bear no longer - Sea Whale would
be more fitting. Or, if one were not inclined to redundancy, simply the Whale.
Merigan almost sniggered but caught himself.
"Lord Najjar," he said formally, stepping around the large visitor's chair to
present himself to his father.
His father looked up from the scroll he'd been examining and rolled his eyes.
"Seat yourself, Merigan. Civility is a terrible look on you."
Merigan smirked and collapsed into the plush velvet chair, and begun examining
his nails. "And what do I owe the pleasure, father? I have not been in this
office for, dare I say, nigh a year."

His father folded his enormous hands upon his desk. "Just the small matter of
House Qadir. Their eldest son and heir - Nasir? - seems to have taken ill
with a rapidly advancing wasting sickness. Lord Qadir's clerics are beside
themselves trying to treat him, yet every prayer uttered slides off the poor
bastard like oil on eel skin."
Merigan looked up lazily and met his father's eyes. "And?"
His father puffed out his cheeks and snorted. "You thought it wise to make a
move against House Qadir when we have three contracts set to expire with the
Empire? Our three largest, in fact? Chaos breeds mistakes, Merigan. Like
leaving the bastard alive, for example."
Merigan waved the criticism away. "The anemone that produces the poison I used
lives in the Underdark Sea, father. He will be dead soon, and there is little
House Qadir can do about it." He leaned back in his chair, tracing circles on
its satin arms slowly with his finger. "Nasir had secretly been negotiating
slave transport contracts with the Empire on behalf of House Qadir. Lord Qadir
is notoriously hard to work with, and relied on his son's considerable
diplomatic skills. As you say, our contracts are almost up. House Qadir saw an
opening - I closed it."
Lord Najjar nodded and leaned back. "I had figured as much. You are a clever
one, Merigan, and the little spies you have employed since childhood have paid
dividends for the family."
Merigan smiled and splayed his hands out. "So... why am I here? A blue ribbon,
perhaps?"
His father returned the smile. "You could say that. You were very careful.
House Qadir doesn't suspect a thing, so far as I can tell. But the Empire is
an entirely different matter."
Merigan's face drained of color and his finger shuddered to a stop on the arm
of the chair.
"After one of the Council's sorcerers deduced the poison, and the... poisoner,
they sent their congratulations on a successful renegotiation. With a
stipulation."
Merigan breathed out slowly, sinking further into the chair.
His father flashed a rare grin. "That's right, son. You're taking the
Bloodoath."
Character Summary
Added Fri Feb 9 14:43:07 2024 at level 12:
Merigan Najjar was born to a rising noble House of Hamsah, and since childhood
has connived to further the power of his family. He is well bred in speech and
in accoutrements, and cultivates an image of a pampered, charming noble to
great effect. Behind the facade is a ruthless man obsessed with he and his
family's image and status. After poisoning a rival house's heir that was
plotting to steal contracts with the Empire from House Najjar, the Empire
deduced that Merigan was the culprit, and impressed with his moxy, demanded
that he take the Bloodoath in exchange for House Najjar's contracts being
renewed.
Merigan is not particularly fond of leaving the comfort of his noble house to
serve the Empire, but soon recognizes the value in it. He plans on advancing
up the ranks of the Divine Sect to benefit further trade opportunities for his
family, while openly collecting personal prestige that he may not have
directly under his father's shadow. Despite his ruthless nature and sarcastic
attitude, he is loyal to his father and family.
House Najjar are ardent worshippers of Lord Rillan, having a small,
fashionable chapel on their House grounds. His father lays credit to this
worship to the family's rise in power. A favorite saying of Lord Najjar is
that hard work and worship of Lord Rillan are one and the same.
Rillan's Blessing

Merigan gathered his silks up and grunted as he bent and lifted the large
crate at his feet. It jostled in his arms with a bright tinkling sound, and a
dreadful smell arose from within. He wrinkled his nose, but smiled all the
same.
There was no more need for this paltry collection of poisons that he had
brought from his family's House to the Palace. He had been blessed by Rillan,
and one drop of his blood was more noxious than the entire toxin collection he
had gathered carefully in his youth.
When Rillan had bestowed his blessing upon him, at first the pain had been
agonizing, alternating fire and lightning in his veins. But as his control
over it had grown, it was not pain but a fiery rapture, almost sensuous.
He dumped the wooden crate into a gully near the Balator fields, a shattering
sound breaking the stillness, and looked out at the horizon, stars twinkling
above the cropfields and copses of trees. His faith in Rillan had proven
strong, and he had climbed the ranks of the Empire quickly. He had feigned
obsequiousness to all, but only the Dread Lord had truly commanded respect.
Daerys had proven a capable leader, and Merigan had decided to hitch his
proverbial wagon to him. A necromancer was a formidable ally, and Daerys was
efficient in his orders, and deadly in battle.
As for the High Priest, Merigan had finally been admitted an audience, and
even fought side by side against the waning servants of Fortress with him. The
High Priest was capable enough, sure. But a healer of Joihe leading the Divine
Sect? Merigan would have none of it. The High Priest, through age or lack of
focus, did not wake from his bed enough, nor command the respect of the
Imperial legions. Merigan would depose him soon, as was only proper. A priest
of Lord Rillan should lead the Divine - and would, to victory. The former High
Priest would be graciously allowed to remain within the Sect, but on a tight,
firm leash.
Merigan grinned, his pearly-white, straight teeth flashing in the darkness, as
he held up a finger to eye level. He concentrated upon his faith in Rillan,
and a single drop of hissing, black venom formed upon the tip.
"Soon," he whispered.
