Description
This small gnome woman stands at a height of 2'6. Her ochre hair has been
pulled back into a sleek ponytail. Bright green eyes stare out at the world
from beneath bushy eyebrows. Her robes are dusty and worn, though they are
well fitted and embroidered with arcane sigils. She carries a number of
textbooks from her guild, which overflow from the top of her backpack.

Chapter One
Added Sat May 28 17:09:58 2022 at level 51:
Merethyll Elmwind spent her childhood in Evermoon Hollow, surrounded by a
family that wished for nothing more than to see her flourish. Merethyll's
family was not wealthy or renowned in the city. Her parents refused to let
their modest means have any bearing on their daughter's ambitions. When
Merethyll announced that she would become an advisor to the Queen, her mother
stayed up for many nights, weaving baskets until dawn. Her father sold the
baskets in Hillcrest and trapped extra rabbits, all so that Merethyll could
take classes on diplomacy and military tactics.
When their daughter was tempted away from her studies by the call of the wild,
her father spent months teaching her how to survive in any terrain. Merethyll
could see how the extended absence from her mother broke his heart, but he
refused to return home until the job was done.
"She might miss me now, Mer, but she'll never be the same if anything were to
happen to you."
It was no surprise to anyone when Merethyll fell in love with a dashing
warrior and pledged to have a family of her own. After years of attempting to
bear children, Merethyll finally listened to her mother: "We do not always get
what we wish. But know that as the stars sparkle above the treetops,
opportunities lie in wait for you."
A few decades later, Merethyll's husband was killed in a caravan ambush. She
made her way across the western continent, heading south and west to the small
town where her husband would be laid to rest. As she neared the Voralian
river, a shrill cry broke the stillness of the plains. She sprinted towards
the sound, fearing for the worst. When she came upon the picnic basket that
held a newborn gnome child, Merethyll felt her heart shatter.
The abandoned child needed a protector, and fate had all but chosen her to
intervene. Merethyll named her newly adopted daughter 'Mezai' and began the
long trek back home to Evermoon.
Chapter Two
Added Sat May 28 17:11:57 2022 at level 51:
From the time her daughter could speak, Merethyll had to contend with a child
that didn't belong in Evermoon Hollow. The duo made the journey through
Ar'atouldain and then beyond, through the High Pass and the Udgaardian Plains.
While many in her home fretted over their lifestyle, Merethyll paid them no
mind. She spent days teaching her daughter the tricks of survival that she had
learned from her father. Their evenings were spent among others, when
possible. Inns, shared campfires, and small villages showed a young Mezai the
diversity of Thera and nurtured her curiosity.
One night, Mezai asked her mother about the concept of 'home'. The questions
were endless, connected by a swiftly unraveling thread, and undercut by their
own lack of a permanent residence. Why did you go back to Evermoon? Why can't
we stay in Hillcrest? Do you really hate that one OneHeart family because of
the incident with the rabbit stew?
Ever patient, Merethyll tried to weave the disparate threads together. "Home
is about freedom, darling. It is about feeling true and whole, even if the
people surrounding you are strangers. I chose this path to give you a chance
to stake out your own. You would have hated me if I kept you in Evermoon."
While entirely correct, her answer was too vague for Mezai, who coveted
answers that were no less solid than granite. If home was a place that was
true, could that not be defined? The OneHearts were not truthful - at least
not that *one* family, so that place was not true. Simple enough. The
Udgaardian Plains were not home to either of them.
Chapter Three
Added Sat May 28 17:13:08 2022 at level 51:
Mezai devoured books on the locales beyond their small slice of the western
continent. The questions continued: Did you know that the Sultan has trained
dancing camels in Hamsah Mu'tazz? Why can't we go to Darsylon? You said you
liked wine! One historian wrote about a cult in Arkham, but we can't know for
sure. What do you think, mom? To these questions, Merethyll had even fewer
answers. The widow found herself praying to her goddess, asking if she was
unfit to be a mother. Merethyll would read her Mezai's books late into the
night, trying - and failing - to understand the appeal of places like
Tir-Talath. Wasn't it just a smaller version of the many cities that were near
it?
Upon reaching the age of maturity, Mezai approached her mother with the
conversation she had been dreading. Ever diligent, her daughter had prepared a
list of pros and cons to convince her that she should support Mezai in moving
to Galadon. While Merethyll had no inclination to deny Mezai her wishes, she
noted that the cons column was suspiciously empty. Beneath the heading, a
small phrase had been penned and underlined: Mom - are you coming with me??
Merethyll finally understood her own parents, who had never much liked her
taste in men. They agreed to the wedding with a smile and a sigh, believing in
the joy that sparkled in their daughter's hazel eyes. Mezai had already made
her decision, and now it was time for her to decide on her own. In the end,
she spoke the words of her heart: "I can't. Galadon would suffocate me, and
I'm not sure you'll stay there for more than a year. You knew that already,
though. That's why it's in the cons list. Let us talk about your plans. How
will you afford to live there?"
Chapter Four
Added Sat May 28 17:16:48 2022 at level 51:
Mezai revealed her decision to join the Guild of Shapeshifters - one that was
notably absent in Evermoon. When questioned on it, her daughter was abnormally
soft-spoken: "Well, I want to remember all of our trips. I want to remember
the lessons you taught me. I can't learn that if I'm absorbed in books all the
time. Isn't that what you've been trying to teach me?" Merethyll laughed as
tears welled in her eyes. She explained to her daughter that she would make a
wondrous scholar - but only if that was what she truly wished. Unfazed, Mezai
pulled out another leaf of parchment and continued on with her plan. She had
penned the outline of her own research and spent nearly an hour describing it,
barely taking the time to breathe. It was, as Mezai said, an expansion of the
works she had read so far. No one had bothered to speak about what made these
places truly unique, or what the best city might look like. If home was a
place that allowed one to feel whole, free, and true, wouldn't it be important
to list out the characteristics of these places?
Merethyll could only nod. Tears welled in her eyes at the thought of Mezai's
imminent departure, and her darling daughter was too busy talking about the
'generous stipend' of the Blood Tribunal to notice. At the end of an
emotionally taxing evening, Merethyll and her daughter split a bottle of wine
and watched the stars until they fell asleep.
Only a few short weeks later, Mezai had gathered her prized books, some
clothes, and enough coin to keep her fed until she reached the Academy. She
hugged her mother tightly and cried for a brief time before promising: "I'll
write to you. You have to hear all about the taverns and Inns along the
Eastern Road. I'll make multiple trips so you know it's not just me drinking a
lot of wine. And I need to tell you my forms too! Maybe I can fly back to
Evermoon when I'm off the watch - just don't shoot me out of the sky."
With that, Mezai made her way to the back of the merchant caravan and waved
goodbye to her mother. Galadon was a week's journey, and Mezai had no
intention of watching the horses make tracks in the earth. She settled down in
the back of the wagon, cramped between bags of grain and stacks of leather,
ignoring it all in favor of her newest book. She only had three hundred pages
to go - with luck, she could finish the book by nightfall.
A letter to Evermoon, addressed to 'Mom'
Added Wed Jul 13 09:38:11 2022 at level 51:
Mother,
So much has happened since I last wrote to you. I spoke with my Goddess and
finished my manuscript on the cities. I wanted to send you a copy but the
courier told me it would cost me fifty gold to do so. I know you're
travelling, so you wouldn't have anywhere to put the pages anyhow. If you were
here, I know you'd make a joke about using them for kindling. I would cry.
Anywaysssss, I'm truly happy. I feel like I've found my place. The thought of
some young adventurer reading my book and getting inspired makes me giddy.
Don't tell all your friends yet - the Lady still has to review my work. I
cannot think of anything worse than coming back to Evermoon to tell everyone
that I am not the scholar they heard about.
There is something I else wanted to talk to you about. I left the Spire. I
know you'll be worried about how I'll get by, but I saved up my stipend for
many years. So... now that you know about that, I'm sure you're asking: 'Why
Mezai?'
Did you hear of our plans to rebuild the Masters cabal? I know you always told
me to not jump into things with both feet. Breaking one leg means you can get
out of the forest, breaking both means you die. Right? Well, I think I might
have fractured both legs just now. I want to believe in this so badly but it
seems like now that we've announced it, all my allies are taking a step back.
Suddenly our recruitment efforts must be muted and it just... I don't know.
Normally I can gather my thoughts about these things, but I can't now. Maybe
it is a grand adventure plotted on some map by Joihe, with no real intention
to revive the cabal. If that is the case, I still will not be upset I left the
Spire. I made my decision to help the younger magi of the next generation. If
it is a ploy, I will be upset that Tamazin did not trust me enough to tell me.
Oh. I haven't told you about Tamazin, have I? Please don't be angry. I am
friends with a lich.
- Mezai
