Description

A swarthy human male is before you, with dark hair and dark eyes. He is lithe, and his movements lead to the question of whether his skin is the color of his heritage, or merely filth. "Shifty" is a good word to describe him. His eyes soak up his surroundings, as if searching for something. Or perhaps he is simply paranoid. His armor is rather rag-tag and none too clean either, and he appears to be wearing little more than rags underneath. He occasionally flashes a smile, though, as mischievous as it is clean, and one wonders what exactly he is up to.

Born in the slums of Hamsah Mu'tazz, which the Sultan will try to tell you
don't exist, I've had to watch out for myself most of my life. The folks at
the orphanage were nice enough, don't get me wrong, but there were so many
*rules* and breaking them was so easy and fun. So once I was old enough, I
snuck away, back to my birthplace, and lived on the streets.

I don't really know who my parents were. Probably a prostitute and her
client, or something like that. It doesn't really matter. I've always been
able to take care of myself.

The slums were a good home for a while. Better than the orphanage. Better
to be dirty and free, than clean and trapped. All the soap in the world
can't clean your soul.

Street Rat

Yes, I'm a thief. Beggars can't be choosers, the old saying goes. Well, I wanted
a choice. Besides, plenty of rich folks pass through Hamsah, and plenty of 'em
don't deserve all that coin they carry. So I'd "liberate" that coin. Make use of it
myself, and share it with some of the younger urchins. Buy real fancy things like
bread, meat, vegetables.

Oh yeah, high on the proverbial hog, that was me. Well, one fine day, I noticed a fairly
weak-looking mark, strolling out the north gate, looking like he had some trouble
on his mind. So I followed him, quiet-like, and sure enough, he was up to
no good. Picking on some orphans.

Now I didn't enjoy living int he orphanage, but that didn't mean I wished anything
bad on it, especially not the orphans. But I was pretty helpless to do much to
that bad fellow but steal a copper or two when he wasn't looking. So, I went to
the Academy, got some book learning, and some skills. I'm still a street rat at heart,
but this rat's got a little longer fangs on him.

You might wonder why I'm learning stuff like knifing people in the back, hittin'
'em in the kidneys, all that thuggery sorta stuff. Well, fighting fire with fire
seems like a good approach to me. Those that'd push down the innocent? Well...they
can take a little pushing from me, now, yeah?

So it seemed only natural that I'd join the guild that's all about that thuggery
type stuff. Plus it looks like they need a guild leader. Why not me? I can
try and whip 'em into shape, get 'em to serve the Light and all that. Or
give'm the boot, if not!

So yeah, if that makes me a scoundrel, I guess that's all right by me.

A Whole New World

So I up and joined the Fortress. Stylish entrance, too, yeah? Chased down
some darkling all the way from Galadon to Hamsah, finally ended him at the
healer in Hamsah, with the Marshall watching. Then just like a knife
to the gut, I was a Squire.

Kinda different isn't even in it when it comes to being part of the Fortress.
It's like I've got a family and stuff, now. Folks that care about me. Never
really had that before. Oh sure, the folks at the orphanage were nice and
all, but they didn't really care specifically about *me*, yeah? Can't blame
'em either - never know if one of those snot-nosed brats is gonna turn into
an Imperial soldier or an uppity Tribunal or a dirty tree-hugging Outlander.

Plus, would you believe I've not only looked at the Lady Baerinika, but
held a conversation with her? She even gave me some real special boots!
I up and lost'm like the fool I am, though. Bah.

Had some talks with the Marshall about the Spearmaiden. Gonna try to
prove myself worthy to wear her mark someday, yeah? Not sure if I'll ever
be worthy, but she seems real nice, so we'll see.

A Friend Like Me

Life in the Fortress was a little weird at first, yeah? Lots of 'em are
more advanced in the guild and all that, but don't seem to have the street
smarts, or whatever it is. Doing silly things, getting themselves killed.
Meanwhile, lots that are like me, a little inexperienced within our guild...
we're just humming along, mostly successful. Kinda weird, but there ya go, yeah?

Well, once I felt a little more comfortable in my own skin within the
walls of the Fortress, I approached the Lady Baerinika again. This time
I don't think I made a damn fool outta myself. We had a good long talk
about lots of stuff, and she gave me a challenge, to help the Marshall
with a task he needed to complete for another of the Gods, Whiysdan.

I also asked her about my birth, seeing if she could tell me who my parents
were, yeah? I'm guessing my worst thoughts are true - ma was a whore and da
was some Imperial scumbag - because she didn't really answer me other than to
tell me I probably shouldn't worry about it. I told her I was wondering about it
because I'd been thinking of taking a last name. I mentioned I was thinking that
instead of taking the last name of my father (or mother), I might take the
one of the only one in the world who'd ever acted like a father to me - the
Marshall, Vallinane.

So, later on, I went to talk to the Marshall about all this stuff, yeah?
Talked a bunch about this thing he's doing for Whiysdan, and we talked about
me taking his name. I didn't want him to feel weird about it, yeah? Well, he
surprised me quite a bit. Instead of saying he'd have to think on it, or 
anything like that, he just up and said I was one of his family now. Can you
believe that? It's all official now. I'm supposed to be welcomed like an elf
in Darsylon and all that. Me, a little street rat from Hamsah, somehow part of
some sort of elvish royalty or something. Huh.

One thing though. The Marshall said he wasn't adopting me as a father. Said he
felt like he was more of an older brother. I'm fine with that. I don't figure I've
ever had a friend like him, so what do I know if he's a father or brother, yeah?

A Diamond in the Rough

Been quite a life so far, yeah? Doubt anyone, especially me, could have predicted
things would turn out like they have. Been a lot of surprises, most all of 'em 
pleasant.

First thing was getting named to the Brigade, fighting as a Maran, now. I was hoping
for it, of course, but it's one of those things you never really...expect, yeah?

Then the Lady Baerinika gave me another task. I was to come up with a way to sorta...
test her followers (myself included). I came up with three ideas, and she seemed to
like'm all. They all centered around making people think about her religion, what it
was really about, looking at it from different angles, that sorta thing, yeah?

Well, I sent out that first challenge - asking her followers to come up with something
they might expect to see on a list of Tenets in her shrine. Got some real good answers.
Would you believe there is now a book at the Altar of her shrine with those same things?

I've been getting lots of respect and feeling real, real welcome in the Fortress, too.
It's like people here don't care where you've been, who your parents were, any of that!
If you do your job, do it well, and help others do theirs, well then, you're all right
by them, yeah? Funny how the world works.

I know that it's Daevryn's folks that have a tattoo of a diamond in the rough, but when
an overgrown street rat like me can be made to feel so...welcome, so useful? Makes a
fellow feel all shiny like that, yeah?

To top it all off, my shoulder's got a little ink on it now, yeah? The Lady Baerinika
deemed me worthy to bear her mark. Never woulda guessed at that, growing up in the slums,
cutting purses, and all that, yeah? Yep, feeling shiny as a diamond.
