Mylene Kuanos the Spunky Old Lady of Boundless Luck, Meter of Mind

Role

The Kuanos family lived outside of Cragstone in a protected cavern that
was defended by the large family as well as hired elite guards from
the city.  They were well respected and desired craftsman as their
family was the only one that was able to "kyan" the stone when they
molded it with their magic.  This process turned the stone to a deep
blue hue which was extremely beautiful and also gave it the special
property of negating the cloaking magics that the dark-elfs had been
using to infiltrate the city.

The family had an unusual amount of magical talent.  They have been
almost exclusively of the Invoker or Conjurer guilds as their bloodline
gift had a side effect of not allowing them to channel the magic of the
other schools.  Very few members of the family ever went outside of the
underdark as they were needed for the safe keeping of the svirfnebli
home.  Those without magical prowess became martial fighters, miners,
or other craftsmen.  Those with magical prowess worked the stone almost
non-stop as the process was arduous.

The midwife delivered a healthy baby girl.  She cleaned the baby off and
swaddled the baby in a blanked.  The mother reached out for the baby and
as soon as she saw it she let out a large gasp and passed out.
This baby was stark white which isn't rare for a normal svirfnebli
family, but for the Kuanos family, it has only happened once before.

Most of the true history behind the last albino Kuanos has been lost to
the ages.  What has been passed down through stories has been exaggerated
or misstold, it is really hard to tell what is true or not.  The
general narrative is that this svirfnebli went to the Overworld in a
time of great need to assist someone called only The Moderator.  This
svirfnebli wielded the power to twist flesh and bones into unnatural
shapes with extremely devestating outcome to the recipitent of her power.
This hero used this power while searching for a horn, or an orb, or some
other great item of power. This is where the stories start to get vague.
In some stories she assists in finding it and in others she falls just
short reaching the item.  The ending is the same in all instances in that
she was destroyed in a powerful magical explosion.

It was said that this mage was driven with what can only be described as
an unrelenting passion and nothing could stop her from her goals.  She
wouldn't listen to her family, elders, or anyone else that was attempting
to keep her from her calling.  She was disowned from the family because
of this and this story was used to scare little children into listening
to their parents.

Mylene's mom was very superstitious and told her fears of this story to
the midwife.  She begged the midwife to raise the baby as her own, living
with them as she wanted to still be a part of the child's life.
With much pushing the midwife reluctantly agreed as her family was going
through some hard times and this would take care of all of that.

Mylene's childhood was fairly normal.  She was happy to be growing up
with her brothers and sisters in the large cavern and was happy to be
learning the art of mining.  There was a woman named Adamine that seemed
to treat her special than any of the other kids there always giving
her the rock candy as well as the special spiced jerky that she loved
so much.  She didn't look too much into it, she was just happy for the
extra treats...

One day she was in the mines learning from the master along with her
best friend, Ragnvald, and three other students.  The master was teaching
them how to find the faults in the stones in order to separate the cave
wall into boulders.  He spent previous three days going over the safety
instructions and today was the day to hammer the stone.  Mylene was the
first to go and the instructor was assisting her with every step.  When
she struck the stone a perfect crack formed, the instructor nodded with
approval.  This is where everything changed.
Everything then appeared to go into slow motion.  The crack which was
finished from the first strike then started to ripple in a different
direction than it should and the boulder fell.  The boulder fell on
Ragnvald crushing his leg.  The other students ran and the instructor
grabbed the pick and started to work on the stone.  Nothing the
instructor did seemed to work as expected, something was causing the
stones to act differently than normal.  Mylene was hysterical screaming
for help.  She started clawing at the stone with her fingernails,
screaming at the teacher for him to do something, but all of his efforts
were in vain.  Something sparked inside of her, she grabbed onto
Ragnvald and her strength grew like that of a giant and she tore him
from the boulder (and also his leg).  Ragnvald passed out at this point
and she couldn't stop the bleeding from his newly formed leg stump.
She reached deep inside her and placed her hands on the bleeding stump.
Her hands started to glow and she started to speak words that were
unfamiliar to her and the skin closed enough to stop the bleeding.

She looked down, at the boulder, and finally at the leg and then passed
out as well.

She awoke a few days later.  Adamine was there along with her mom and
they were both crying.  They were both happy to see her up and Adamine
also looked a bit scared.
Word made it through the cavern of what transpired that day and there
were always whispers while Mylene was around.  She went to see how
Ragnvald was doing, but he was in a coma.  The priests were doing what
they could, but for now it was not waking him up.


Mylene was trying to get back into her normal routine but it wasn't
working.  She kept imagining that day, she couldn't figure out how
she was able to tear Ragnvald from the grasp of the boulder and
where those strange words came from that seemed to mend his flesh
together.  The stones also were not cooperating.  She was unable to
complete even the simplest task of shaping the small stones.  She
felt as if they were rejecting her.

Unknown to her the stones were rejecting her, she was also undoing the
kyan of stone that her her host family worked so hard to build.
This went on for some time until this was noticed by the elders.  The
leader of the family eventually was able to coax what was going on out
the stones and called Mylene to a meeting with her mom and Adamine.

The leader stated that the stones were rejecting Mylene as she had
another purpose.  At this point Adamine broke down and told the entire
story, while Mylene just stood there with her jaw open.  The leader took
in this information and informed Mylene that she could not stay in the
Underworld as it was not safe for her or anyone around her.  She needed
to venture into the Overworld and find out why the stones were not in
harmony.  He mentioned that brief visits may be acceptable, but that
should only be done after she knows what needs to be done to bring
the stones back into balance.

After packing up her supplies and obtaining a map of the safest paths
to the Overworld, she said goodbye to both of her moms.  She couldn't
be upset with Adamine and she promised to come back to get to know her
more.  Her last stop was to see Ragnvald.  He was still in a coma and
she bent down to give him a small kiss on the forehead and whispered
the following into his ear.

"I'll make this right. I'll learn the magic to fix
your leg.  If you are not awake I'll go to the ends
of the Overworld and to the center of the Underworld
to find someone who can help".

She kissed him one more time on the forehead and turned around and left
to start her journey.

Mylene is relaxing in the rock gardens of the Island and she is
penning a letter back home.

Moms,
That really feels strange to write, but I want to know that I care about
both of you.  I am writing this letter in one of the most beautiful
places I have seen in the overworld.  There are gardens made of rocks
and sand and the cutest little green shrubs and trees.  I come here a
lot as it reminds me of the stones of home.  While I am here my mind
is very calm.  Life in the overworld is very hectic and these gardens
give me a different perspective of how other overlanders view their home.

There is a lot of hatred in the overworld, much more than just the bred
in nature of the Dark-elfs and Duergars that we are used to in the
caverns.  There are people here that call themselves good, and they
murder people just because they think of them as evil.  I have noticed
that they rarely get to know these people, only murder them because
they believe it is best.  There are also people here that hate the cities
and those that protect them for nothing more than them existing.
I won't even go into those up here that hate magic.  That could take many
letters or possibly even a small book.  Sufficed to say they don't like
me very much at all.

I have learned some of the Moderator.  I know that he was a protector
of an ancient rift that no longer exists but he was the protector of
a group that called themselves the Nexus.  I have recently joined this
group and the garden I am sitting in is on our island.  There are a lot
of great, and interesting people which I hope to introduce you to at
some point in time.  None of those of this island seem to have any
hatred that I have seen and that is because our main focus is to keep
the world in balance.  We all watch out for each other as well as the
world.  I just wanted you to know that there are others up here looking
out for me like you used to.

I have included a few extra silver pieces for the messenger to return
any news on Ragnvald you may have.  Please make sure he is taken care of
and give him my love.

Mylene Kuanos, Keeper of the Balance

Mylene is thinking to herself while her hands are thoughtlessly working
on carving a stone.

Since joining the Isle I have had little time to continue my research
regarding my ancestor as well as the Moderator she fought along side of.
What I have found is that the explosion was truly real and that most
likely she was dead either before this explosion or perished within in
the massive blast.  I do hope at some point to be able to spend more time
understanding what happened to make certain the Keepers can keep our home
protected.

When I first joined the Isle the balance always needed tending to.
Lately it has been better as it seems that only one thing usually
requires attention at a time.  There are many Keepers that are doing
their jobs well and I know that not many outside the Isle thank them for
their efforts so I make sure that I do. I also try to help them out as
much as I can.

There have also been many that have celebrated the earth's final embrace
and while I do miss them greatly, I know that they are still with us in
our knowledge, history and actions.  I believe that it is through what I
learned from my Meter, Cersee that I have been voted the Meter of the
Isle.  I hope to impart our knowledge into all of the Isle so they
can continue performing what the land needs when the earth has finally
claimed me.

The Isle is now strong, stronger than I have ever seen it in fact. The
balance will always need tending but I have been away from home for too
long.  I have decided that I will make this trip quick.  I need to see if
my ability to repair bone and flesh can tend to Ragnvald's wound.  I have
high hopes as I have mended many a broken bone and torn flesh, but I
have never attempted to restore an entire limb.

I have informed the Isle via missive that of this trip I take and left
some silver to pay for messengers in case I am needed.

As she finishes her thoughts she looks down into her hands and smiles.
It was once was a white rock but now it is a carved female arial
figurine with a crystal beak and what appears to be flaming tail
feathers. Mylene finds a nice place in the rock garden, kisses the
figurine on the head and places the it facing the Eye of the Storm.

It is that time again, a time which makes me so proud to be one of the
Isle.  This time there are others whom are pressing for the roles of
leadership and this makes me quite happy as the Isle always needs new
insights and leadership.
The vote for Rhyme I feel will be closer than the last vote, but I still
see Iklahn being needed.  There has been some turmoil with the Imperials
will not be solved by anyone other than him.  I have tried to speak with
the Empress when I see her, alas nothing has been successful.

As for the position of Meter, I feel Inerayo will be a good one.  He is
actively striving for the role and how I saw him react to the tie of the
last vote, I can't imagine what would happen if he doesn't win this vote.
While I would still love to be in the position of the Meter, the stones
I have been grabbing seem to be speaking nothing of the vote.  Perhaps
it is a good thing as it keeps my mind off of the vote.

No matter what happens, I will continue to seek balance for the world
and try to make the Isle and the land a better place.

I have seen many of those that gain their power from the divine and
while it always interests me I have never thought it would guild my
path.  I have always thought that my abilities came from the veil and
with every spell I cast I can feel that power surge through me.
I love the way it feels when I draw upon my magic and while I know my
powers are arcane in nature, I think back to how I came upon my ability.

While I know I am not empowered the same way a priest is, something or
someone must have guided me in order to save Ragnvald.  Everywhere I go
I see the number thirteen from number of candles, to the amount of
days it took me to get back home.  I also remember the discussions that
Arigan and I had back when he was still alive.

It is now time to seek out Lord Whiysdan, I have been to his shrine and
I have never been to a place which made me feel more at peace with
myself.

I will find the right food and drink to hopefully be given some of his
time.  From those discussions, maybe, just maybe he will find me
passionate enough to be given his blessing.

I can't believe it, the Lucky Lord sent me a sign, a wonderful dice
that has thirteen sides!  In all of my life I have heard of six sided
dice, as well as some more rarer dice with eight, ten, and even twenty 
sides, but never one with an odd side.

I took this dice to his shrine and behold he was there!  I was able to
give him the food and drink I had specially made for him and I think
it was a big hit.  

He stated that he would be keeping an eye on me, and I take that as a
good thing.  One can never have enough luck and an eye is much better
than a thirteen toed foot.

Every time Mylene rolls the dice given to her by the Lucky Lord and it
lands on that thirteenth side she smiles.  She has gone from fiddling
with her rocks and stones to rolling this die when no one is watching.

The more and more she rolls it, when that thirteen shows her day is a
great one.  She begins to think more about that odd sided dice and
begins to think on her past.

Her pale white skin is an extreme oddity for her family.  It is what
prompted her mom to give her up so that she now has two wonderful
mothers.  Her powers are an oddity as well, as well as being a deep
gnome that prefers the surface to the underside.

Her personality is a bit odd as well, she prefers to help others out
especially to fix the balance where as more people she sees wish to
have a more direct way to affect the balance.

From her research she also remembers a line from an odd poet only known
as Ferg
- "Dream about the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force
- "and cynicism."

She realizes she has always been an odd one in this world, this is not
a bad thing and until the earth takes her for her final embrace she
will always strive to make everyone's life for the better.

I count myself as one of the blessed.  I have walked with the two
lords of the Isle while they were mortal and I learned much from them
and I can only hope that I left an impression on someone who is now
an Immortal.

Iklahn and I were a great team as the weakness I feel I have are his
strengths and the areas he had for some growth, I felt are my strong
points.  Together we were amazing, I look at our time as one long
time where we were bonded together.

My dear Inerayo, I feel he thinks that I would be upset at him for
taking the position of Meter from me, but it is quite the opposite
it was great to have another share the responsibility and I could watch
and grow from his time as Meter and I feel that it has made me
a much better Meter the second time around. 

While I do miss them greatly, I still hear their voices and I know they
are watching over me and the Isle.

Mylene gritted her teeth together as Lord Whiysdan hefted the blunt side
of his axe.  She closed her eyes and felt something cold upon her neck
and then, BLAMMO!

When she was able to stand the only thing she could compare it to was
the burst of fireworks she had seen once as a child.  The mark of the
thirteen was set upon her neck and where it should have hurt, she only
felt warmness.

She thought back to those thirteen that she remembered and quietly
blessed each one for their impact on her life.

The Lord Inerayo for challenging her to be the best she can be.

The Commander Salyeris for showing her respect amongst enemies.

The Innkeeper Rachiel for her talks and guidance.
The Chieftain Krunk for many good fights, both with and against.

There was a huge eruption of cheers as she stood next to the Lucky Lord.
Mylene was beaming from ear to ear and she still couldn't believe that
she had won.  The Third tournament of the Thirteen, the trophy so
wonderfully made by Shamise was held in her hands and she stretched it
up to the sky for all to see.

She knew it was now time to try to wake Ragnvald, if she was ever going
to be able to help him, it was now.  She made it to the underside and
the news of the tournament traveled faster than she did.  When she did
arrive, there was a big celebration, but she went straight to Ragnvald's
side.  She pulled out the trophy and set it next to the bed side and 
begain to let the magic flow within her.  The trophy then started to
rattle on the nightstand and she felt something else join in with her
casting.  It was like nothing she has felt before, there were 
twelve other Zealots, most whom she did not know all helping her out.

With her spell finished, she collapsed, but not before she saw Ragnvald
start to move.

She awoke later that day to Ragnvald rubbing her head and smiling.

There was so much to tell him, that took almost the first three days.
He would never be able to walk, but Mylene pushed him about in a wagon.
and she could only think of him.  She thought of the Isle often, and 
wondered what she should do.  So many years she has fought, and she 
knew she had many more in her.  But her love, was now awake, and it was
to be a difficult decision.  

One day short of two weeks, when she awoke she could not wake Ragnvald.
She tried and she tried, and even with the help of the High Cleric, he
had been taken with the final embrace.

Mylene knew that he did not wish her to make a choice between him and 
the Isle.  She knew he enjoyed the thirteen days they spent together
and she also knew that when she took her final rest, she would be with
him for eternity with the earth's blessings.

She left back for the overside, knowing that this may be the last time 
she saw her birth home.
