Role
The Talath
Added Fri Oct 19 17:05:44 2012 at level 5:
The Talath had lived on the plains for as long as their oral history could
remember. A simple people they lived as one with the lands, hunting game,
foraging in the low mountain ranges, and raising small plots of wheat and
corn where pastures allowed it. For the most part their life was hard, but
somewhat idyllic in many ways. They traded with the elves from the north that
traveled the plains, with the strange childlike Halflings who had begun to
make their homes in the earth to the west, even at times with the humans who
had built a small settlement to the south. There were dwarves who had
apparently carved halls of stone within a mountain to the east, but the
Talath could not fathom anyone who did not wish to live beneath the broad
expanse of the heavens, and so had no dealings with their like.
Oaneewke was born when the moon sat dark in the sky, a night which usually
portended ominous things, when the dark spirits often roamed and made
mischief. Yet at the moment of her birth, when her lungs first filled with
the gift of air (known to her people as the breath of the Ancient ones) her
first cry, the announcement of new life, was met with a blinding arc of light
across the heavens as a flaming star passed over head. And so it was she was
named Oa-nee-wke, begifted of light. The tribal shaman foretold that this
omen from the Ancients would give the child visions of that which was, is and
would be, that Oaneewke would see things that others could not and live in
times beyond time. Her gift would be a great blessing to her people and she
should study the ways of forest witches, such a heavy burden for an infant
who was yet to see her first moonrise.
Visions
Added Fri Oct 19 17:06:49 2012 at level 5:
She was for the most part a normal child, running across the plains with
abandon amidst the great herds, climbing every tree in the forests, gazing in
wonder into the night sky and causing her parents no end of worry. Her
visions began when she reached her teenage years and far from being the gift
the shaman predicted, they were instead of great distress to her. She would
get flashes of them, gazing at a vista at times it would change, almost have
superimposed upon it another alternative scene. Once a small green hillock on
the plain suddenly became befouled with death, a strange wooden structure
appeared and hanging from it at the end of a rope was a rotting corpse, but
as soon as it appeared it disappeared. Another time a pass in the mountains,
a verdant green trail, became dark and menacing. The grass became mud,
trodden and dirty, and along the trail tramped hideous creatures, twisted and
mottled, betusked and leering as they marched in force to the east. Oaneewke
closed her eyes, but the stench filled her nose, making her gag, and the
cacophony of tramping feet and jangling steel rang in her ears. Yet, when she
opened her eyes they were gone. As time passed, she began to think she her
mind may be broken and the once carefree child began to become sullen and
withdrawn.
The Mists of Time
Added Fri Oct 19 17:08:26 2012 at level 5:
The Witch of the Forest was a strange looking creature. Perhaps once she had
been young and beautiful, but now she looked disheveled and unkempt. Yet her
voice retained the timber of youth and strength, and when she spoke to
Oaneewke it carried both compassion and authority. For several months the
Witch instructed her in the properties of various herbs and roots, how to
make remedies and how to draw on the power of the earth. Oaneewke did not
speak of the visions that plagued her, and the Witch did not ask, though she
knew full well the gossip surrounding her apprentice. It was not until one of
those visions involved the Witch herself, that the subject could no longer be
avoided. They were walking through the foothills and had just past through a
canyon leading north. They were looking for ashwagandha, potent herb used to
cure certain toxins, and as they passed the end of the canyon Oaneewkes
vision became cloudy, before her eyes a strange mist arose surrounding
everything and deadening all sound. Taking a step forward Oaneewke feels
something pulling at her robe and as she turns the mist parts. There
clutching the hem of her robe is what remains of the Witch, her hands
entangled in the fabric of Oaneewkes garment. The arms, the face, the torso,
are blackened and appear stretched, like the Witchs whole body had been
pulled, by some terrible force. Her face is locked in a horrifying scream and
the body is amputated at the hips as though by a great sword. Oaneewkes
screams and buried her face in her hands, sobbing. What is it child? come
the Witchs concerned voice. Opening her eyes, the young woman sees her
mentor before her, unharmed, a troubled gaze fixed upon her apprentice. What
did you see? she questions. Oaneewke can only sob.
Visions Revealed

The Witch made camp and over a small fire brews some herbal tea which she
forces down Oaneewke's tired throat, and as the warm spiced liquid begins to
take effect, her tongue loosens and she relates her vision. It feels good to
talk of it, of all of them, so many, and for the first time she feels able to
unburden her soul. The Witch sits quietly and listens, nodding occasionally
until finally the outpouring ceases. 'Have any of these things ever come to
pass?' she asks. 'No' Oaneewke replies, 'none of them. How could they? Once
at the place where there is just a brook I saw huge white structures,
reaching high into the sky, sitting beside a wide river. How could that be?
Who could build such a thing?' The Witch sits quietly pondering. 'Perhaps
what you see is in an epoch not yet even imagined by the Ancients. Mayhaps it
will never come to pass.' It was a glimmer of hope for Oaneewke and for now
perhaps the only solace she would have. They talked into the night until the
embers of the fire grow low and they both slipped into slumber.
The Portal and the End of Sanity
Added Fri Oct 19 17:16:10 2012 at level 5:
The next day dawned gray and foreboding, to the North were storm clouds, but
they seemed to hang in the air, rather than follow the winds. They broke camp
and continued on their way, towards the clouds, neither uttering a word. They
had traveled an hour when the next vision occurred. About ten feet in front
of her a strange oval vortex suddenly appeared, the air around it crackled
with energy. It was black as the darkest night and appeared to swallow the
light around it, almost twisting the fabric of space itself. Oaneewke
swallows hard and closes her eyes. Over and over to herself she begins to
chant a mantra 'It's just a vision. It's not real. It's just a vision. It's
not real.' As she chants she begins to walk forward. 'It's just a vision.
It's not real. It's just a vision. It's not real.' Yet within 6 steps she can
feel the force of the strange portal pulling at her, her clothes flap in the
swirling air, her hair stands on end with the charge of miniature lightning.
'It's just a vision. It's not real. It's just a vision. It's not real.' The
wind rises into a roaring gale and inside it she hears a frantic voice
calling her name. 'OANEEWKE!' The force catches hold of her and yanks her
forward, yet something, something tries to pull her back, but it is
insignificant compared to the pull of the blackness. She feels her body
distend, contract, twist, straighten and compress. Shards of glass pierce her
mind, darkness tears at her, yet there is only silence. Oaneewke tries to
scream, but the darkness fills her throat like a black poison, drowning her.
After what seems like an eternity she feels a final sucking compression,
followed by a shuddering clap of thunder and finally she falls to her knees
and begins to wretch. A cold mist slithers around her arms and legs as she
empties the contents of her stomach on the ground. Trembling she climbs to
her feet and opens her eyes, the cold mist surrounds her and she tries to
take a step forward. As she does so she feels something pulling at her robe,
as she turns the mist parts. She already knows what she will see and finally,
her mind snaps.
Synopsis
Added Fri Oct 19 17:17:25 2012 at level 5:
Oaneewke is a creature out of time. The portal she mistakenly stepped into
has drawn her forward to the current age, but the passage through, and the
discovery of her dead mentor who tried to save her prove too much for her
sanity. She is still plagued by visions, but now they go in two directions,
she sees things as they were, but also now as they may become even farther
through time. Her mental unbalance has left her completely paranoid, so she
has little trust in anyone or anything, including herself. She does and can
have lucidity, often when saturated in alcohol, which is why she drinks, but
it brings with it feelings of overwhelming guilt. She often attempts to find
meaning in random things and uses the scrying of bones her mentor taught her.
She has a feral passion and holds to the ways of the Ancients, seeing the
civilization around her as a manifestation of her nightmares. She can become
obsessed with things, finding a way back is always in the chaos of her mind
and she thinks that somewhere within this age there may be a way, so she
compulsively explores and examines every nook and cranny of the world.
She may eventually side with the Outlanders, and her penchant for alcohol and
unpredictable behavior may lead her to Whiysdan.
Strange Happenings in the Recess of Bliss (I)
Added Fri Oct 26 13:36:28 2012 at level 13:
In the myriad of her incoherence it is hard to say how she found her way to
the Recess of Bliss. Perhaps it was the scent of alcohol that emanated from
the cavern, or perhaps it was just blind luck? She was in an almost frenetic
state at this point, what little drink she had was gone: the last she had was
delivered to her by a falcon. Really? Did that actually happen? Or was it
some construction of her mind pulled in two directions by her memories of the
past and her visions of the future. She just knew that what little salve
those last precious drops had given her had evaporated and now both the
physical effects of being sober, and the mental torture of her visions were
in full force.
The gnome who entered the chamber was a horrific sight, her face pale and her
intestines pouring out from a long linear gash across her belly. No, there
she was standing upright and smiling with a look of concern in her eyes. Yet
in once instant Oaneewke saw her lying at the feet of a hulking barbarian,
axe in hand, grinning with bloodlust in his eyes. Oaneewke claws at her eyes
and in her ears hears a tone of concern "are you well?" "Who are YOU!? WHAT
DO YOU WANT?!" she screams at the dead gnome. Her sanity dances away from her
grasp. Do y"u need some water to drink? the dead gnome asks. Drink? Drink?
Yes drink! Thats what she needs. On the ground there is a water skin.
"Noooooooooooo!" part of her mind screams. Alcohol, please, please her thin
voice pleads. The dead gnome talks more, but it is a hazy conflagration until
finally it gives Oaneewke what she needs. Suddenly she is guzzling from a
bottle, like a young wolf suckling hungrily on its mothers teet, and as the
warm liquid flows down her throat in into her blood, the visions fade and
some clarity and peace comes to her mind.
So it was that she met Mylene. Their talk was a strange one, Oaneewke tried
as best she could to explain, but she is not sure the Gnome truly understood.
Amidst their encounter a strange presence appeared a voice with such power
behind it, but not overbearing, just a quiet and mirthful strength. Mylene
explained that presence as the God Whiysdan, in whose shrine they now stood.
Then another arrives, another most strange and feral. This mage was strangely
burned, yet spoke of himself as though he were himself a flame, but in his
was he even real or just another vision, or memory? No it was clear he spoke
of things of the Past which she knew well, yet it was the now. He claimed to
be of a band of misfits and bandits called the Outlanders: Outlander, she had
heard that name, where was it, somewhere in Arkham, no north of it, she came
upon a centaur standing guard over a large tree, but she thought it deserted.
The strange mage talked of their ways, that they gave reverence to the
Ancients all in different ways. In this moment Oaneewke resolved to seek them

out, perhaps a connection here and now with her past was what she needed to
help stabilized her mind.
The conversation waned and the strange pair left and Oaneewke remained musing
her situation, in her drunken haze of clarity. The alcohol stems the flood of
images she saw in here head, though it exacts a toll on her body. Whether she
murmured her musings out loud, or just in her head she is not sure, but an
acolyte arrived and bound her eyes, leading her off to another strange room.
In it was a pulpit and strange statues. Oaneewke reaches out her voice to the
only being that remains in earshot. And so she met the God Whiysdan. His
mirth was almost infectious and strangely enough, even though the alcohol in
her system waned, there were no vision in his presence. For the first time
since being wrenched away from her home she feels a sense of peace. She
resolves to ask this chortling Deity for help and he acquiesces by giving her
access to his strength. As the whiskey he poured over her drips off, she
feels that strength flow through her and the tremors in her hands still
slightly. The God gives her a task to bring him 13 things, 4 representing the
past, 4 representing the future and 5 to represent the present. Within the
request, he claims, is a meaning for her to deduce.
So with new strength and new purpose Oaneewke steps forth, and as she leaves
a falcon delivers her a mug of ale. Not a delusion after all!
