Description

This tall, portly man is clarly graying around the edges, his weathered skin showing its age with a ruddy hue. His broad shoulders are still strong, if slightly hunched, and his once fat legs seem toned by the years of travel. A face still marked by an off-center nose and piercing green eyes is framed by heavy, graying brows and higher cheeks once rosey and now slightly pallid. Black robes trimmed with blue and emblazoned with tiny storm clouds and lightning bolts form his atire, while a battered heavy leather belt still supports an ancient looking tome and belt knife. Role

Youth and Pain

That last glance would be forever burned in his memory. Looking back at the
ravine wall, the cells stacked ten high and twenty wide, the unholy stench of
sick, blood and offal, and the pure waves of misery. That, he would never
forget. He was near sixteen when he finally won free. He could barely
remember the life before, that of a hopeful young initiate of the
shapechanger's guild. The six years in between changed him  changed them
all.

The raid happened at night. The first year initiates all lived in a retreat,
just to the east of Voralia. A mix force of wizards and jaettes came, easily
overwhelming the initiates minders, and lead the children into the night. The
next week's march was pure hell, as they were lead north, not through the
north road pass, but through old, minor passes, treks unused to such numbers.
Several of the children died. Though their captors seemed intent on keeping
as many alive as they could, they were cruel with their whips and taunts.

Eventually they arrived at a lonely canyon, the walls of which had been
converted to cells. He learned that similar raids had occurred in Tir-Talath,
Udgaard and Darsylon - near a thousand youth with shapechanging talents had
been rounded up and confined.  Their captors, as they soon found, wanted
their own special brand of entertainment. Instead of watching fully trained
gladiators, or fierce animals, they would watch children with some talent for
shapechanging fight. 

Over the next few years, the prisoners were pitted against each other. There
were fights daily, and though most children didn't fight more than twice a
month, there was no set schedule and they lived in a constant state of fear.
Furthermore, there was an equal if not greater amount of infighting between
the prisoners for the food that was too scant, the shelter that was fleeting,
or the simple result of putting a thousand youth with no training or
education in one miserable spot.

Growth and Pain

As Obregon learned relatively quickly, their talents evolved unpredictably.
He fought one boy twice in two months. The first time was a straightforward
match, more a brawl than anything else.They each had learned to form
rudimentary claws, and were mostly slashing at eachother. At the end of the
allotted time, Obregon had scored more hits by far, and was deemed the
winner. When he went to fight him again, Obregon expected much the same, as
his talents had not changed in the short span. Yet the other boy had learned
to grow a lashing tail, surprising Obregon with a sweep and beating him
within an inch of his life.

It was not a mistake he would make again. After being tossed back in his
cell, he lay bleeding for days. He could barely move enough to drink the
fetid rainwater that pooled by the door, and certainly wasn't strong enough
to earn himself some of the "stew" they were often fed. As luck would have
it, a slimy lizard found its way into his cell. Springing quickly, he caught
the creature with reflexes born of desperation. Tearing the tail off the
thing, he began to eat. As he was near done with it, he noticed the lizard
sprouting a new bone. Setting aside his terrible hunger and pain, he
concentrated as much as he could on the creature, and as he bit it to pieces,
he focused on the strands of flesh, and how even in certain death, they
strove to reknit by pure reflex.

Learning the trick of quick healing saved his life. The captors were
surprised he survived, but put him into a match soon enough. He knew then
that he could not let his opponent live to develop some other trick that
might prove the end of him. As the whistle blew, he willed his legs to match
the hare, and sprung across at the other boy. His opponent was the confident
type, having learned how to turn most of his skin into the thick,
impenetrable hide of the nearby mountain rams. Yet he was unused to such
quick challenges, and before he knew it, Obregon was on him. Striking the
other boy with two quick punches, he seized a quick opening and sank his
teeth into his throat. A silence befell his fellow captives as they watched
him tear open the other boy. Deaths did not often occur, especially such
clearly planned killings.

Freedom and Pain

Yet Obregon didnt care what they thought of him. He knew he had to take what
he wanted and act as he knew best, just to survive. He lost fights after that
day, but not many, and killed more than his share of foes. While he had very
little formal training, he learned to mimic the animals of the mountains in
some form or another. When he caught a glimpse of the mountain grey gecho, he
knew it was something special. The creature was like a chameleon, able to
blend its skin into the grays or browns of the mountain. 

It was through this skill that he escaped, slipping to the back of the food
line one gray dusk. Willing his skin to shift to match the grey rock, he
painstakingly crawled, literally, between two guards to the canyon wall,
scaling it with lizard claws toward freedom. Those first few weeks were
tough, adjusting to a life where he could not simply kill all those that
angered him. How he wanted to, though, for it seemed all the restrictions and
expectations of the greater world were built to oppress and force. Nights
brought nightmares, and hence he spent any coin he could on too much ale, and
too much food as if to make up for the years of nothing. Coarse language and
attitude marked his countenance, as he couldnt learn to put on the cheery
faces of seemingly so many Therans. He brooded, and promised himself in the
darkest of nights he would find a means to get everything he wanted.

An Overview of Obregon

Obregon was taken from the Voralian shapeshifter youth program at the age of
ten, along with the rest of his class. It left him with a very early 
impression that nothing is sacred, there is no safe place.

He was forced to fight other shapeshifter youth on a weekly or monthly basis.
Food and water were scarce. He learned to survive by fighting for what he 
wants, and scrounging for what he could not fight for. His actions reflect
this - nothing is out of line or out of the question to get what he wants.

Getting what he wants is linked inexorably to his survival instinct, 
because they were entertwined for so long. He will fight hardest for his own
survival or desires, placing that above the direction of all but the most 
powerful.

He joined the Fold so he could have the opportunity to finally continue 
formal studies into the magical and darker arts. And to have the power to 
keep himself well-girded in the face of all opposition to his whims.

As of yet he has no loyalty to any diety, rather keeping an open mind for 
any potentially benefitial opportunity.

Becuase of his lack of social upbrining, he can slide into crude and 
profanity-laced speech, though he goes to his utmost to avoid doing so around
other scions. He fears revealing his lack of polish to them, as he believes
they will try to exploit it.

He has extreme post-traumatic stress from his childhood. He drinks heavily 
when alone, though he tries to shield both of these from anyone else.

Maturity and Reflection

Maturity has brought much to Obregon. As his time in the Chasm has grown, his
insecurities toward being uncouth have faded, as he truly has become more
thoughtful and eloquent. He believes this is because he no longer worries
where his next meal will come from, but the influence of other thoughtful and
insidious beings has likely helped.

He is more self-reflective than at any time in his life. This has given him
the perspective to analyze how he conducts himself, and work to improve upon
it. This has become a great asset given his newfound relationship with the
goddess Neltouda. 

The fact that he did not initiate (consciously) contact, and instead had a
diety seek him out fills him with an immense feeling of quiet confidence. He
understands that he has much to learn, and another subset of skills to learn,
but he feels as though a great realm of possibility has been open to him. He
knows his future is in his own hands, and feels better equipped to handle
that fact than he ever has.

Renewed Outlook

As he stared out into the inky darkness of the chasm, Obregon was glad for
his cat's eyes. Rarely did torches burn of late, as the few who tread the
darkened halls had other means of sight. It did not bother him overly much,
for he had long ago grown comfortable with the dark, but the lack of the
natural light he relished long ago brought a sense of wistfulness to the
aging shapeshifter.

The brightest moment of his life had come some months earlier, in earning the
true blessings of the Captain. Acknowledging how much this meant to him
brought Obregon a wry smile. He had gone from an innocent youth, to a
terribly lost and abused teen, to a dark wizard for the better part of his
life. And yet through it all, though many branded him evil, Obregon never
felt it. Yes, he lusted for knowledge, mystery and discovery. And yes, he
would put his own desires above all else.

Perhaps, he mused, it was his insatiable appetite for the new, the
challenging, and the noteworthy that had brought him such labels. Yet earning
the blessings of the eternal Neltouda gave him a sense peace he had never
felt. He knew that despite whatever deeds he would commit, when it came time
for his mortal coil to break, he would have an eternal spot on the Maiden. He
knew that, as long as he remained true to his beliefs and what he had
discovered with the Captain, his soul would be safe for eternity. Such a
realization took most of the power from his foes, for he was truly content
with his outlook.

He was jostled from his reverie by the clank and creak of fifty swords upon
shields, followed shortly thereafter by the warning hiss of the Shadowed
Ccul'Gra as the latest legion of Maran struck.  How like rats they bread! he
thought, and self-righteous rats at that.  Distracted by his own preparations
and thoughts, he called over his shoulder "Prepare, my dark fellows."

A wry chuckle was all that answered. "I am not amused, Obregon.This mantle
means constant preparedness, and it is but you and I here."

Shaking his head with a curse, Obregon nodded. "Yes, the Fold is empty again.
Perhaps the youth will come, but not this day. And perhaps the Adviser is
enough for such lean times...."

He let the thought trail off as he cloaked himself in the protective magics
and took wing. Perhaps an Adviser was enough for now, but one day soon it
would not suffice, and Obregon knew that he wanted to assume the higher role
within the Chasm.  The voice of the Archmage seemed to display his thoughts
"You're no elder or adept, Obregon, regardless of what your Captain says. Now
face these fifty paladins and clear your damned head."

Cawing out his frustration, he resolved to remain true and strong until
perhaps the Archmage was wrong.
